> The new shopping centres and their cinemas

Beaugrenelle, Aéroville, Vill’Up: Paris has several huge shopping centres in strategic places like airports, and renovated areas like Beaugrenelle and La Villette. Cinemas add to the attractiveness of such centres, which have multiscreen cinemas with at least eight auditoriums with around 1,000 to 1,500 seats, in accordance with current legislation. At the Beaugrenelle shopping centre, Pathé Beaugrenelle is the new 10-screen Parisian multiplex designed by Ora-Ïto. Spectators benefit from optimum comfort in their seating, which is on rows on a gradient of 25% giving better visibility and more leg room (1.10 m compared to 0.95 m on average). Two of these 10 auditoriums are equipped with Dolby Atmos technology, the most up to date in terms of sound immersion. One of these two rooms also has one of the three largest screens in Paris (18 m). The Aéroville centre has opened on the site of Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. Inside, Europacorp Cinemas–Aéroville, a totally digital 12-screen multiplex cinema, offers a unique experience. The spectator is very quickly surprised by an LED wall and a wall of flagstones 14 m long and approximately 100 m². While waiting for the film, they will see film trailers and clips in a 500 m2 space on 4 giant screens suspended and oriented 360°, equipped with a unique projection system. Films are programmed every ten minutes in auditoriums also equipped with Atmos sound systems. This technology delivers an all-enveloping sound perception with sound effects coming from some fifty or so speakers installed behind the screen, on the sides and in the ceiling. With this huge cinema, the film maker and producer Luc Besson reinvents the suburbs and the multiplex, a year after the inauguration of his Cité européenne du cinéma at Saint-Denis. Linked to the Cité des sciences et de l’industrie, Vill’Up, ‘the city on the up’, is due to open in autumn 2014. The new shopping centre with its numerous concept stores, restaurants and fun activities will house a Pathé digital multiplex with 16 screens on 2 levels, i.e. 2,900 seats over 10,000 m². All of which should please the 8 million visitors expected every year!

> The Paris metro turns into a photo gallery

In 2014 at the initiative of the Ratp, the metro becomes a centre for a photography exhibition. At the Luxembourg, Cité, and Saint-Michel metro stations and under the viaducts of lines 2 and 6, the Ratp will be showing part of its rich heritage of 300,000 photos, among which are some old glass plates handed down by the different companies preceding its creation in 1949. The Ratp also gets involved with photography events; after Paris Photo in 2013, it will be the festival Circulation(s) that will take place in February-March 2014 at the 104. Finally, the Ratp will commission a photographer each year on a theme linked to the Ratp, combined with an exhibition. The Ratp intends to step up its action in favour of photography in the years to come.

> The official press agency Chine Nouvelle opens in Paris

Paris has always been a draw for top photographers from all over the world, because of its beauty and the incomparable diversity of its sites and because of its reputation as the home of the greatest photographers in history. This year, Paris also holds appeal for China (already present in the capital in the fashion and contemporary art sector) as can be seen in the opening of the Xinhua Gallery, a new gallery of Chinese photographs. In fact, the official press agency Chine Nouvelle, the world’s leading press agency in terms

CURRENT TRENDS!

> Photography trade shows and fairs in Paris

Paris has lots to offer fans of art photography or new photographic techniques. Since it moved from the Carrousel du Louvre to the Grand Palais in 2011, the Paris Photo trade show has become the most attended trade fair for old, modern and contemporary photography. The 2013 edition with its 164 exhibitors and exceptional sales confirmed its status. To reinforce its position, Paris Photo launched an American edition in the same year in Los Angeles. Success here led to Paris Photo becoming the world’s leading photography trade fair. That enabled it to appeal to a wider public and increase the number of visitors which in only two years grew from 38,000 to 50,000. Everyone can buy photographic works at Paris Photo. Although it is not rare to see photographs sold for several tens of thousands of euros, it is also possible to buy the photographic works of an unknown artist for less than 300 euros, and signed editions of catalogues from specialist editors are also available to buy. Opportunities are even more numerous at satellite events, like the trade show Photo Off, Nofound Photo Fair or Offprint Paris. Photo Off presents galleries and photographers that show their sensitivity to the world. It is also a good place for first time collectors as the works shown are affordable. Fotofever, an international trade fair created in 2011, was held in 2013 in Paris and Brussels. The 2014 Paris edition will take place at the Carrousel du Louvre. Focusing on contemporary photography, it differs from other trade shows in the organization of ‘phototalks’, encounters with journalists, collectors and gallery owners on the theme of collecting and in the publication of a guide intended for novices. Finally, new technology features at the Salon de la Photo, which in 2014 will unveil what is new among the leading world brands, at Porte de Versailles. > Red carpet for photography festivals in Paris

Several photo festivals take place every year in Paris and make Paris a very popular destination. After having created a photographic itinerary on the theme of ‘travel and dreams’, in 2012, over fifty or so venues on the Left Bank, the Festival Photo Saint-Germain-des-Prés repeated the initiative in 2013 on the theme of the ‘face and body’. Signings, readings and round tables punctuated the exhibitions programmed in local galleries. The Festival international de la Photographie culinaire makes it possible to become more familiar with top international photographers in this field. After the previous edition on the theme of the egg, it paid tribute to luxury and celebrations, in 2013. The Festival Circulation(s) seeks to throw light on talented young European photographers. The fifth edition will be held at the 104 and will present the works of 22

young photographers. Screenings, workshops and the readings of portfolios will be organized for the general public and young photographers. Not forgetting of course, the Mois de la photo, which will take place in numerous art galleries in the 4th arrondissement, and its fringe version — the Mois de la photo off.

> More and more cinemas

In Paris, new cinemas continue to open and so contribute to bringing life to some districts that are often undergoing redevelopment. Since the end of 2012, a 104-seater cinema has been open to the public from Friday to Sunday at the MK2 within the Grand Palais. The 4 recently-opened MK2 art house cinema screens under the BNF can seat 520 spectators, in ‘love seats’, designed for two people by designer Martin Székely. Access to the library and cinemas is through a new monumental central entrance to the building, visible from the esplanade, designed by the architect Dominique Perrault. In the north-east of Paris, UGC opened a multiplex in the capital last October, its third since those at Les Halles and Bercy. In 2014, a small cinema auditorium is expected to open at the Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé in the 18th arrondissement. Some auditoriums like those at UGC Ciné Cité Paris 19 are an important part of urban planning. Situated in a former industrial area, in the Claude-Bernard district, the UGC multiplex project was piloted by the architect Jean-Paul Viguier. It boasts 2,800 seats in 14 auditoriums and seeks to become a real district in the capital. In 2015, Pathé will open 16 auditoriums at Vill’Up at the Cité des sciences et de l'industrie in the 19th arrondissement. Pathé will also open 18 auditoriums on the Île Seguin at Boulogne. In 2016, Cinémovida will open with seven auditoriums in the Batignolles district.

> Cinema auditoriums get a makeover

With new cinemas and renovated cinemas, cinema buffs have been spoilt for choice for several years. Historic cinemas like the Escurial, the Arlequin, the Saint-Germain-des-Prés revamped by Tsé Tsé, and the Nouvel Odéon revamped by designer Matali Crasset already had a makeover in 2012. This year, the Cinémathèque française is also refurbishing two of its auditoriums, the Salle Langlois and the Salle Franju. Comfortably seated, the public will be able to attend exceptional screenings: on 70 mm film, digital or in 3D format. In February 2014, UGC will begin work on the seven auditoriums at the Forum Orient-Express, which will be converted into eight auditoriums run by UGC des Halles. 2014 is a year in which MK2 Odéon, Hautefeuille and Vavin will go upscale thanks to an ambitious renovation programme. The cinema UGC Gobelins will be extended to include four other auditoriums between now and 2016. Improvements are also being made at Pathé-Gaumont: Gaumont Convention, Gaumont Alésia and Gaumont Fauvettes will get a makeover between now and the end of 2015. The

Fauvettes cinema, devoted to heritage, will be renovated by the architect, Françoise Raynaudet and interior decorator Jacques Grange, with an indoor patio. Then work will begin at the Gaumont Marignan, Gaumont Ambassade and Gaumont Parnasse. These bold initiatives for improving existing cinemas in Paris are being emulated in the suburbs: the creation of two auditoriums at the Pathé Belle Épine cinema has been entrusted to film-maker Christophe Gans. > A living space for photography, video and cinema: Le BAL

The most recent venue devoted to documentary photography is still enjoying growing success with visitors and professionals. A project of the association of the Friends of Magnum photo, presided over by photographer Raymond Depardon, the venue opened a few steps from Place de Clichy in 2010. This former cabaret and dance hall has thus given its name to this new institution, which enlivens the photographic scene in Paris with its programme of exhibitions, a bookshop and cafe restaurant. It is now an essential place for fans of images in all forms: photography, video, cinema and new media. Well-designed convivial spaces such as the BAL CAFE or bookshop BAL BOOKS make the venue particularly appealing. The exhibition ‘Ponte City’ will highlight the work of the South-African photographer Mikael Subotzky and the artist Patrick Waterhouse, from 23 January to 20 April 2014. > Private cinemas galore

The trend for private cinemas has taken off in Paris, the cinema capital. The Germain Paradisio was the first to open, on the lower-ground-floor of the Café Germain, an arty restaurant in the Odéon district. This 130 m² space, decorated by top designer India Mahdavi, can host up to 24 people. The cinema can be hired to show a film and so offer a private viewing of the latest films, films in 3D, restored classics, all programmed by the MK2 cinema network. Similarly, Le Royal Monceau-Raffles Paris has opened its own cinema within the hotel, the Cinéma des Lumières (available for private hire); with 100 seats and spectacular technology, it is the most modern cinema in Europe. Another memorable address is Publiciscinémas, at the top of the Champs-Élysées, attached to the Publicisdrugstore complex and agency of the same name, located at number 133. At the end of 2013, the former cinema auditoriums of the Cinémathèque française at the Palais de Tokyo were converted into a new venue ‘YOYO’, which organizes screenings, talks, concerts, fashion parades, clubbing evenings … The largest auditorium can seat 300 people. The two others, ‘Mademoiselle Cinéma’ and ‘Madame Cinéma’, which opened at the end of 2013, can seat 20 and 60 respectively in very comfortable seats. These two luxury auditoriums, available for private hire, have some ‘love seats’ by Martin Szekely. They also boast cutting-edge equipment: full HD digital video, 3D sound, LED 10 m diagonal screen. In short, everything to make this a sophisticated, confidential and memorable cinematic moment! Le Germain Paradisio 25/27 rue de Buci, Paris 6th – M° odéon – www.legermainparadisio.com

> Paris in the digital era

The era of digital cinema is here and Paris is part of it. Most big multi-screen cinema complexes are now equipped to show digital films, and new cinemas continue to open. One such example is the Imax digital 3D at the Pathé-Quai d’Ivry multiplex cinema, with 565 seats and a 210 m² screen. Two auditoriums at the new Pathé Beaugrenelle are equipped with Dolby Atmos. EuropaCorp Cinémas also has this sound techonology in two of its auditoriums. Finally, Pathé is to open a 16-screen cinema at Vill’Up, at the end of 2014. Art house cinemas, prized by the city, are being equipped to show digital films. The Gaîté Lyrique is also a reference for the digital arts, combining sound creations and installations. Finally, on the outskirts of Paris, Le Cube at Issy-les-Moulineaux, a pioneer in digital art centres, launched its Cube Festival during the summer of 2012, on the Île Seguin, a preface to the new visual arts centre due to open on this site.

> Paris, capital of art-house cinema

Paris is without doubt the capital of art house cinema. It has an impressive number of 376 cinema houses including 150 independent cinemas, 89 of which are classed as art-house. These figures reveal the capital’s commitment to making quality cinema available to the biggest number of cinema-goers. The Étoile-Lilas, open since 2012, is a cultural venue with seven auditoriums, with a total capacity of 1,500 seats, and upscale equipment. The legendary Louxor cinema, with its 1920s neo-Egyptian façade, reopened in 2013. After 25 years of inactivity this legendary cinema, owned by Paris City Council, was restored by the architect Philippe Pumain and has made it an essential cinema venue for local residents. After starting out by showing avant-garde films, the Studio des Ursulines became the first art house cinema in France. Since 2003, it has been a place for children to discover the diverse and rich world of cinema. In spite of this, in recent years, several huge multiplexes have opened (MK2, UGC Ciné Cité, Pathé Beaugrenelle, Europacorp), whose policy is to show a majority of blockbuster films. To counteract these, art house cinemas are equipping themselves with digital sound (Dolby Atmos) and taking advantage of grants awarded them by Paris City Council via its Mission Cinéma. 39 already benefit from these. Paris is therefore a cutting edge and vibrant cinema capital that protects its art-house cinema by guiding it towards a digital format. > More and more prizes for photography

For the last ten years, photography awards have been plentiful. Usually private initiatives, these reward the work of young contemporary photographers or experienced photographers by offering them a personal exhibition and often providing them with funding to produce works. The 19th edition of the Prix HSBC will take place from September to November 2014 and will elect two prizewinners. They will benefit from the publication of a first monograph publication published by Actes Sud and an itinerant exhibition. HSBC France will buy at least six works from each prizewinner for its photo collection. For four years, the company Eurazeo has been organizing the photo prize ‘Grand Prix: un photographe pour Eurazeo’. This prize is awarded to a photographer either a professional or a student. This year, the prize has been attributed to Michel Kirch with prize money of 10,000 euros and his works are are on show at the Espace Central Dupon Images until 21 February 2014. The Prix HCB (Henri Cartier-Bresson) is awarded every two years to a photographer whose works are similar to a documentary. In 2013, the French photographer Patrick Faigenbaum was awarded the prize for his project entitled ‘Kolkata’. The prize winner receives 35,000 euros, an exhibition at the HCB foundation in Paris and the publication of a catalogue. The Prix photo AFD, reserved for professional photojournalists, has since 2012 been the opportunity for the ‘Aide française au développement’ to raise public awareness about the challenges involved in development in Southern countries. Three distinct prizes are awarded. In 2013, the Grand Prix AFD Polka du meilleur projet de reportage photo was awarded to Marie Dorigny, the Prix Spécial AFD du meilleur reportage photo to Gael Turine, and the 1st Prix AFD Nikon du meilleur webdocumentaire to Cédric Gerbehaye, at a ceremony held at the Maison de la photographie. In 2013, Paris-Photo and the Fondation Aperture awarded the third edition of the photo book prize, with 10,000 dollars of prize money. The international panel of judges voted Óscar Monzón for the ‘first book’ and Rosangela Rennó for the ‘book of the year’ from a selection of 30 works. There is also the Prix BMW/Paris Photo by the Fondation BMW, which also finances a residence at the Musée Nicephore Niepce, the Prix Montblanc l’Insensé, the Prix Picto de la jeune photographie de mode, the Prix Carmignac gestion du photojournalisme and the SFR Jeunes Talents photo competition; all these brands and institutions show their commitment to supporting contemporary creation.

> A break between two films

More than just a cinema, some places in Paris enable you to take a break between two films whilst staying close to the entrance of the auditorium. For a snack or drink before or after a film, there is the bar, or to exchange first impressions in a more tranquil environment, there is the restaurant. These are the options at the Lucernaire and the Entrepôt cinemas; the latter also has a pleasant garden under a glass roof. At the Bistrot des Cinéastes, you can enjoy specially selected vintages accompanied by regional produce. As for the Café du Cinéma du Panthéon, you can curl up here in a huge armchair and it is also a delightful place to enjoy good simple dishes in a stylish setting, signed Catherine Deneuve. At the Bar à manger at the Nouvel Odéon, you’ll also find organic drinks and lots of delicious snacks. The studio Pin Up is one of the top photographic studios in Paris, popular with numerous international photographers, from Peter Lindbergh to Oliviero Toscani, and top models or stars who come here for photo shoots. Previously reserved for professionals, the restaurant at Studio Pin Up is now open to everyone! An ideal stopping off point for seeing the behind-the-scenes of glossy photos … The legendary Studio 28, on Butte Montmartre, has gained a new lease of life thanks to its local public, and a cafe restaurant on the garden side that warmly welcomes film buffs. Düo, the new trendy venue in the east of Paris, comprises a new gallery, new bookshop and a restaurant. It is a lively place with a monthly exhibition devoted to photography, a selection of books on art, and a cafe serving drinks and snacks. > Hotels for dreaming of stars … of the big screen and photography!

In Paris, you can sleep in the company of Marilyn and under the gaze of the greatest cinema or photographic stars! A picture of Hollywood’s legendary platinum blonde star can be found in each of the 4-star Platine Hôtel’s 46 guest rooms, furnished in a 1950s style. As for the 2-star Hôtel du 7th Art, it will take you to the heart of American

cinema of the 1930s-950s, thanks to an atmosphere that is worthy of the finest cinema sets: posters, armchairs and a variety of accessories from film directors in its 23 guest rooms. And if you like Hollywood atmospheres with understated design with clean lines, the 4-star boutique hotel Mon Hôtel, themed around the great era of Hollywood, will delight you with its black and beige guest rooms. For photographic fans, the Hôtel Atmosphères offers a great immersion into the world of the photographer Thierry des Ouches, via 112 photos on display in the guest rooms and communal parts of the hotel. The architect Vincent Bastie has taken inspiration from the details of certain photographs to create the decor of the 49 bedrooms, six junior suites and two apartments, and showcase the French capital in all its forms. Finally, for performing arts professionals, the agency Première cuts out the stress of trying to find a hotel close to a film shoot, performing arts venue, or that is adapted to an artist’s way of life … by acting as the interface between the world of the performing arts and that of the hotel industry, and dealing with bookings for accommodation, places for castings, cars, as well as the organization of multiple events. A 10-minute walk away from the Centre Pompidou, opposite the Gaîté Lyrique, the new Hôtel 123 Sébastopol is a dream place for a very cinematic offbeat stay in the heart of Paris. With its 63 bedrooms and sophisticated interiors on the theme of cinema, each devoted to an artist and their world (like Jean-Paul Belmondo, Claude Lelouch, Danièle Thompson, the duo Jaoui/Bacri, Elsa Zylberstein or Ennio Morricone), the 123 Sébastopol offers upscale amenities. > Cinema in art galleries

The cameras are rolling! The Galerie Cinéma is the first gallery in Paris entirely devoted to the world of cinema. Open since last September and created by film producer Anne-Dominique Toussaint, it exhibits works and artists freely influenced by cinema. She aims to mount exhibitions on the influence of cinema in contemporary design. The work of chief operators/photographers, actors/sculptors, as well as stage directors/painters will be highlighted through numerous events. For its inauguration in September 2013, she chose to present the work of photographer Kate Berry, through the exhibition, ‘Point of View – Portraits-Natures mortes’. NEW! > Despite digital photography, traditional film photography is still highly popular in Paris

In an era where so much is digital (e.g. the famous ‘selfies’ on one’s mobile phone), and where film photography seems to belong to another age, what could be more different than having your own portrait photo taken at the Studio Harcourt or by a professional in front of one of the capital’s most famous monuments? The famous Studio Harcourt has been making people a star for more than 75 years! Its Prestige portrait glorifies famous people and ordinary people through the use of special lighting and a unique shot. The agency Paris and You Photo offers a bespoke service on

location with a professional photographer who will photograph the client in the most famous places in Paris. Several themed itineraries are available: Romantic Paris on the Seine quaysides, Village Paris in Montmartre, Chic and legendary Paris at Saint-Germain, Secret and Trendy Paris in the Marais, as well as a James Bond style Paris at the bar of a 5-star hotel. A bespoke itinerary (like a star photographed paparazzi style) is also possible. After a 2-hour shooting session, a meeting is arranged in a typically Parisian cafe in Paris to choose the photo shots that will be delivered to the client within 24 hours in digital format. It is also possible to have images and framed shots wrapped for the journey. Finally, for those who have a nostalgic yen for photo booths and their film strips with 4 photo shots, there is the Palais de Tokyo or the Maison rouge, which have photo cabins from the company Foto-Automat; these take portrait photos in four flashes in black and white. Established in Paris since 2007, the company restores and gives a new look to photo cabins from another age to give them a new more original and creative life. > Take photography or film-making lessons on a trip to Paris This is what numerous Parisian companies offer. Of note firstly is Créative Paris Info, supported by the Paris City Council. This programme, seeks to offer other ways of discovering Paris, its history, heritage and culture. To do this, the public can take a training course and have lessons with art professionals. Some 400 courses and classes are already listed on the programme’s dedicated website. For photography and cinema fans, they can take the form of ‘creative Parisian walks’ photography training courses consisting of the exploration of a little-known district of the capital; or they can learn to take photographs in the style of Atget or Henri Cartier-Bresson. As for the ‘culinary photography workshop’, it will delight fans of this genre! Classes in a photography studio are also available, where you can learn about lighting and make-up from a professional. For those interested in filmmaking, there are various options, ranging from the basics of animated films, to super 8 films, or more current, short films and web documentaries. The company Graines de Photographes also offers photography lessons with the former assistants of Yann Arthus-Bertrand, as well as training courses on how to take photographs like a professional. Lessons are given to individuals or groups, with a large choice of themes (‘Street photography, urban photography, ‘night photos’, etc.). The Nikon School, in the 11th arrondissement, also offers lessons, training courses, and advice for all enthusiastic photographers who wish to take stock of their photography techniques over the course of one to three days. Finally, the photography workshop the Œil de l’Esprit offers bespoke private lessons on traditional film photography. nothing could be simpler! The Pagode is a cinema that is well-known and appreciated for its exotic oriental style. Listed as an historic monument, the building is in the style of an authentic Japanese pagoda, surrounded by a Japanese garden and sprinkled with oriental works of art. The Japanese room is richly decorated and will impress spectators. Two films are shown, always in their original version, every evening. In Paris, cinemas with seats with removable arm rests known as love seats, created by designer Martin Seekely, are becoming more and more common. The Mk2 Bibliothèque and the brand new Pathé Beaugrenelle have them. They enable couples to cosy up comfortably together. In summer, outdoor cinema is a popular trend in Paris: at Parc de la Villette with deckchairs and a big screen; and in local neighbourhoods with Cinéma au Clair de Lune, organized by the Forum des Images. The latter takes place in various districts in Paris and draws some 40,000 people for free outdoor screenings of top films from the past and present. Some cinema festivals also take place outdoors. The festival Paris Cinéma is held in the Luxembourg Gardens and on the square in front of Paris City Hall. The Chaise et l’Ecran sets up a huge screen in the heart of the 11th arrondissement. Short films are shown in the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont for the festival Silhouette Courts Métrages, or in the courtyard of the Institut Suédois. The Domaine national de Saint-Cloud also shows films in the open air. In summer, every Monday evening, the terrace of Wanderlust at the Docks – Cité de la mode et du design becomes a panoramic cinema on the Seine. At Studio 28, the atmosphere is typically art house cinema with its auditorium decorated by Jean Cocteau. This tranquil place has all the charm of small cinemas and is far from the crowds of the boulevards and multiplexes. Le Grand Rex is a historically listed building whose auditorium has the largest cinema screen in Europe, known as the ‘Grand Large’. The spectator has the experience of being totally immersed in the film while at the same time enjoying the room’s magnificent sculpted decor. Finally, a trip to the Géode is an exceptional experience. This 30-diameter sphere is covered in mirrors; inside it screens films in Imax format on a hemispherical screen. Fantastic! Contemporary and historical photography is rightly featured in the capital’s galleries. The gallery Vu’ presents the works of the photojournalists who made the gallery famous as an agency. The galleries Agathe Gaillard and Baudoin Lebon feature great photographers of the past, while contemporary photography can be found at Kamel Mennour, the Filles du Calvaire and Michelle Chomette. In recent months, some 10 new photo galleries have opened showing just how flourishing this market is. Apart from the Galerie Cinéma, the Chinese press agency Chine Nouvelle, Xinhua Gallery, and the Galerie Duö, the Galerie Temple has just opened. > The booming photography market

Paris is en route to becoming the capital of photography and the photography market. This year, the trade show Paris Photo once again shows how dynamic and buoyant the photography market is, and this is also shown across numerous new specialist galleries. French and English auction houses in Paris have picked up on the growing interest of buyers for this media. They often benefit from the presence of collectors in the capital, during the trade show to organize special trips during the trade fair or several days afterwards. Christie’s Paris alone registered four world records and 4.6 million euros with its sales of photographs in November 2013. Many companies have been organizing the sale of vintage or contemporary photographs at the Hôtel Drouot for more than ten years. In fact, the photography market is a very stable one because there is a large and constantly new supply. The different segments of this media (photojournalism, fashion photo, art or vintage photography) are flourishing. On 15 November 2013, the Maison Kapandji-Morhange put 250 original photos on sale constituting almost a century of cinema history. Portraits of Brigitte Bardot, Steve McQueen, François Truffaut and Marylin Monroe were sold to different buyers for

amounts ranging from 300 to 13,500 euros. At Drouot, the market is stable, flourishing and often very affordable. Buying photographs is often the first step in starting a collection. Paris is packed with famed places like little local cinemas where children can discover the magic of cinema! There is the hi-tech Imax screen at the Géode, the more low key Studio des Ursulines, which opens its behind-the-scenes, the Forum des Images, the Lucernaire, the Grand Rex, the two screens at CinéAqua which show films and documentaries from National Geographic, but also Disney Village at Marne-La-Vallée to discover 15 auditoriums including one Imax … So, there is something to suit everyone! A new venue for children’s cinema opened in 2013: the Cinéma des Berges France 3 Ludo, situated on the left bank of the river. Films are shown in a covered area of the Berges (open from Tuesday to Sunday from 12-noon to 7pm). At the weekend, films are free and no booking is required. Brassaï (2004) and Ronis (2005), and has also written an important book on photography and the capital: Paris, portrait d’une ville. With over 600 pages and 500 photographs, this book, edited by Taschen, offers a panorama of past and present, the extraordinary and the everyday, things and people, through images by Daguerre, Marville, Atget, Lartigue, Brassaï, Kertész, Ronis, Doisneau and Cartier-Bresson, but also by a number of anonymous photographers who have tried to capture this unique atmosphere. Without a doubt, this book is a bible on Paris, an exhaustive study and observation of the city.

> Paris, the perfect place for a film shoot Although Paris is the capital of cinema due to its number of cinema theatres, the number of films showing every week, and more than 27 million movie goers per year, it is also a favourite location for film directors from all around the world. The number of film shoots has increased by 40% in six years. Every year, more than 950 film shoots take place in more than 435 parks and gardens, 161 museums and monuments, 141 theatres and opera houses, 67 churches, 37 bridges and foot bridges … and many other unusual places. On this subject, the Cité européenne du cinema, a huge Hollywood style studio, was inaugurated in September 2012 at Saint-Denis. It houses cinema and television studios over 60,000 m², and 30,000 m² of offices, as well as image and sound production activities. The venue, the inspiration of the film director Luc Besson, groups together all the professions in the chain of cinema production to make it possible to make whole films in situ. To prolong this momentum and encourage creation, from production to cinema house, the Paris City Council has set up Mission Cinéma. Paris Film, a dedicated organization, also seeks to help professionals plan their film shoot. > Landmarks

Photography and moving images are the focus of exhibitions all year round at the Jeu de Paume, in the Tuileries garden and on the Sully site, near Place des Vosges. For several years now, the wrought-iron railings around the Jardin du Luxembourg have been used to show free open-air photography exhibitions. And on the banks of the Seine, PhotoQuai (September to November) — an initiative of the Musée du Quai-Branly — is an exhibition of non-European photographs. Not forgetting the Maison Européenne de la Photographie with its quality programme of past and contemporary photography, the Fondation Henri-Cartier-Bresson, and Le Bal dedicated to documentary photography. The Forum des Images and the Cinémathèque showcase cinema with exhibition programmes and films for film buffs and cinema goers. Cinema is also an important element of the permanent programme at the Centre Pompidou. Numerous film festivals are also held here. > Events

Every year, Paris hosts numerous fairs, festivals and large retrospective exhibitions. On the cinema scene for example, the 11th edition of the Festival Paris Cinéma is celebrating Belgian cinema this year. The festival provides an insight into contemporary international cinema with films presented by their directors, film premieres, a tribute to a major guest capital city, and festive events. Also of note, the programmes at the ECU – European Independent Film Festival, the Pompidou Centre, the festival Hors Pistes (which in 2013 takes ‘the miniature’ as its theme), Cinéma du Réel, Le Nouveau Festival … and those at the Forum des Images with its Étrange festival, Les Chéries-chéris (festival of gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans&++++), Mon 1er Festival (for children), the Festival des Très courts, and the Mashup Film Festival. Festival des Nouveaux Cinémas presents digital cinema in all its forms. The Mobile Film Festival, which takes place until February 2013, gives an award for the best film produced using a mobile phone! Croqu’Anime showcases the wonderful world of animation films. As for exhibitions, from 11 February to 18 May 2014, the Jeu de Paume is showing a major exhibition on the work of American photographer Robert Adams. NOT FORGETTING … > The Forum des Halles is still all about cinema

In the middle of the Forum des Halles, there is cinema street. Cinema buffs will discover the Forum des Images, with its projection rooms and library. Since it reopened, the centre, which hosts master classes, debates, film screening events and festivals, has become a landmark site for cinema buffs. This institution funded by Paris City Council offers over 2,000 film screenings a year on its five screens and boasts a collection of 7,500 films to consult in its collection room and welcomes more than

300,000 visitors. Since its creation in 1988, the Forum des Images has had a unique collection of films about Paris (i.e. with Paris as either the subject or as the backdrop to the film). This Parisian collection has now been catalogued and has been added to with productions from the Fémis Film School, l’Agence du court métrage (short film agency) and the Pointligneplan Collective, etc. These films can be watched on an individual screen or in one of the two small rooms in the Salle des collections. Further on, the 19 auditoriums and 3,200 seats of the UGC Ciné-Cité des Halles multiplex show all the latest films from all over the world — most of which are shown in their original language version.

> A souvenir photo from Paris

Rather than take back a mini Eiffel Tower souvenir from a trip to Paris, why not look for something more original like the autograph of a film star, authenticated of course! At Arnaud Magistry, there are many themes to choose from. Cinema buffs will be spoilt for choice with photos signed by Sophie Marceau, Marion Cotillard, Michèle Morgan, etc. At the Ile aux images, old photographs of the capital show Paris in sepia, and there are also rare originals of the period. Another idea: photographs of Paris sold by the new shop Yellow Korner in the renovated shopping gallery at Saint-Lazare train station.

> More low-cost cinema

In Paris, cinema can also be low-cost. Everyone can benefit from the special rates at morning sessions before midday. Throughout the year, numerous initiatives, whether national or just in Paris, also allow the public to enjoy films at reduced prices. During the Printemps du Cinéma, films cost €3.50 in all Parisian cinemas. During the now legendary Fête du Cinéma, after having purchased one full-price cinema ticket, you pay only €3 for subsequent films, for 7 days (end of June - beginning of July). The Forum des Images also has a catalogue of 7,500 digital films with its Passcollections, available for a modest sum. > Cinema trails

Paris has always had close and passionate links with cinema: from the Louvre and Belphégor, to the Café des Deux-Moulins at Montmartre, where Amélie Poulain worked, the city is full of cinematographic references. For a tour of the scenes of film shoots to relive famous movie moments, just take a guided tour: the Mission Cinéma of the Paris City Council regularly organizes film trails of recent films: La Môme, The Da Vinci Code, Amelie of Montmartre, Hugo Cabret, Ratatouille … and many more! Ciné Balade provides a fascinating glimpse into the behind-the-scenes of cinema, with three different itineraries: ‘Le Parcours Lumière’ (about the birth and evolution of cinema), the ‘Walk of Fame’ and the ‘Minuit à Paris’ (Midnight in Paris) tour.
