1/2 Day Dismissal Times

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on the afternoons of November 12 and 13. Please remem-ber that all students will have an early dismissal on these days. Since teachers need to prepare for conferences immediately after the dismissal, we ask that all parents pick up their children prompt-ly. Dismissal times are noted elsewhere in the newsletter.

Secondary teachers and Specialists will be located in the ARC from 12:45-4:30pm on these after-noons. No appointments are necessary for secondary conferences.

Early childhood and elementary homeroom teachers are located in their classrooms. These con-ferences are by appointment only. If you forgot to sign up for a conference this past week, please stop by the Reception area on Tuesday to make your appointment. Since it will be a busy afternoon, par-ents arriving late for an appointment may need to be rescheduled for another time.

Elementary students do not need to attend the conferences. Student-led conferences in the elemen-tary school will occur in April 2015. Between 12:45-4:30pm, there will be playground supervi-sion provided for school-age children through Grade 5 while the parent is attending the confer-ence. Parents should bring their child to the playground and check in with the supervisor. In case of rain, please bring your child to the MPR.

Studies have shown that children whose parents are involved in their education achieve at higher lev-els in school. Thank you for making the parent-teacher conferences scheduled on these afternoons a priority. Tips for a Successful Parent –Teacher Conference

Talk with your child: Find out his/her favorite subjects and activities, and ask if there are any

concerns he or she would like you to discuss with the teacher.

Review assignments: Are there some areas where your child really shines and others that might

need a little extra work? Discuss both strengths and weaknesses with the teacher.

Be on time (early childhood/elementary): The conference schedule is tight. If something comes

up, notify the office as soon as possible.

Remember that conferences are relatively brief: If additional time is needed, another appointment

can be scheduled.

Keep an open mind: Conferences are meant to help you understand your child’s school perfor-

mance. Working together with the school/teacher will help your child succeed.

Make plans: Find out what you can do to follow through at home.

Afterwards: Discuss praise that was given by the teacher and talk about areas that you and the

teacher will provide additional support on.

Follow up: In the days and weeks that follow, let your child’s teacher know that you are following

through on what was discussed, and that you’d like to hear how things are progressing in the

classroom.

POPPIES AND REMEMBRANCE DAY

Tuesday is November 11, Remembrance Day. The fifth grade will distribute poppies to all the classes to wear on Tuesday. Please remind your students to bring a $1 donation to support the Poppy Ap-peal. All monies collected remain in the Cayman Islands to assist the members of the Cayman Is-lands Veterans Association. The poppies have

been generously donated by the Royal British Legion and the

Royal Canadian Legion.

The Klingenstein Center for Independent School Leadership at Columbia University Awards Fellowship to

Head of School

Dr. Jeremy Moore, Director of Cayman International School, has been awarded a fully-funded fellowship to the Klingenstein Center for Independent School Leadership’s 2015 Heads of Schools program at Teachers College, Columbia University. This distinguished honor established in 1991, is granted to just twenty heads of school annu-ally. The award provides independent school leaders with an opportunity for focused professional enrichment, re-newal and reflection.

For two weeks in January, visiting heads from around the world gather together at the Columbia University Cam-pus for intensive study to examine educational issues and policies facing independent school educators. The Cen-ter attracts and selects educators who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishment or potential for excellence and equips them with the knowledge, skills and values necessary for informed and effective practice. Participants will focus on philosophy, research, technology and governance. The 2015 cohort includes Heads from all areas of the United States in addition to participants from Australia, Cayman Islands, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Singapore.

The Klingenstein Center is dedicated to improving the quality of independent school education by developing and strengthening leadership among teachers and administrators who work in independent and international schools in the United States and throughout the world. All fellowships and graduate programs focus on instructional leader-ship, collaboration and teamwork, ethical decision making, reflective practice and a commitment to social justice and diversity.

Drawing upon a record of success that spans more than thirty-five years and the full resources of Teachers College and the other graduate schools of Columbia University, the Klingenstein Center stands alone in its capacity to develop leaders for independent schools.

IB learners give thoughtful consideration to their own learning and

experience. They are able to assess and understand their strengths

and limitations in order to support their learning and personal de-

velopment.

On Monday November 17, Wednesday November 19, and Friday November 21,

Cayman Sports will provide an opportunity for CIS parents to partici-pate in Cardio Tennis sessions at 8:30am on campus for $15 per per-son. During these trial days, the fees are being donated to the CIS PTA. These sessions are only available to parents of CIS students. Please contact Warren at warren@caymansports.net if you are inter-ested.

Cardio Tennis for Parents of CIS Expansion Phase 1 fully open and operational!

The first phase of the facili-ty expansion project was completed at the end of

October. Students are enjoying the new elemen-tary art room, an expanded library, new class-rooms and the new technology lab. In addition, the new Multi-purpose room has already hosted several faculty and parent meetings and has been used by classrooms as an excellent presen-tation space. On Tuesday, CIS invited guests from Dart who were involved in the expansion project to a CIS staff meeting to thank them for their efforts and involvement. Aimee Bush, Gary Meek and Nick Natale came to the meeting as we cele-brated the com-pletion of the first phase of the expan-sion.

CAMANA BAY CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING

On Saturday Novem-ber 22nd our Grade 5 and 6 students will be performing at the annu-al Christmas Tree Lighting at Camana

Bay.

Performing students need to arrive at the Crescent by 5:30pm in school uniform (Grade 5 students in the blue polo shirt), and can be picked up by a parent/guardian as soon as

they have performed. The event begins at 6pm. We hope to see many of you there to support our students and to

enjoy this wonderful event!

COMMUNITY NEWS CON’T

The strategic planning process was very successful and a new plan

has been established for 2014-19. As part of the new strategic plan,

Cayman International School is establishing a School Advisory

Committee that will be comprised of stakeholder representatives

from each division of the school. It is our aim that development of

this committee will enhance two-way communication and transpar-

ency. More details will be forthcoming, but if youa re interested in

serving on the School Advisory Committee, please contact Dr. Jere-

Tuition Reminder Trimester 2 tuition is due on 24 November 2014. Thanks to everyone who has already paid. If you have any questions or concerns on your statement please con-tact wendy.foreman@cayintschool.ky For everyone's budgeting infor-mation, the third and final trimester 3 tuition for the 2014-15 school year will be due on 16 March 2015. As in previous years we will be timing our re-enrollment process (which includes a payment of CI$1000.00 per child), for 2015-16 to coincide with trimester 3 tuition, for the mutual convenience of the school and parents.

Parents, please remember that during school hours, you must always go to the administration building and sign in before entering the campus. Please do not go to the lunchroom or a classroom during the school day without checking in. Please do not ask your child to leave the playground or field to come to your vehicle during the school day. These procedures are in place with student safety as our highest priority.

SECONDARY PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES

Dear Parents – This is

a reminder that

Parent/Teacher Con-

ferences are scheduled

for Wednesday and

Thursday, November

12 and 13. Wednes-

day and Thursday are

minimum days, and

students will be re-

leased at 11:55 a.m. Conferences will begin at 12:45 p.m.

in the ARC and end at 4:30 p.m. Secondary parents do

not need to make appointments with teachers. All teach-

ers will be in the ARC and available to meet. Since there

will be other parents waiting to conference with teachers,

it is important to limit each meeting to 10 minutes. If you

need more time to meet with a teacher, please schedule a

follow-up meeting.

After School Pick-Up

During after school pick-up for sec-

ondary students behind the D Block,

please do not double-park along the

curb in the parking lot or next to the

turns. It is important that traffic flow

through the parking lot. When parents double-

park or block traffic along the turns, it creates con-

gestion that completely stops the flow of traffic. If

you need to park and wait for a student, the desig-

nated are is along back of the football pitch. There

are several parallel parking spots behind the pitch

that are available.

dents from CIS

were asked to volunteer to help with these special

patients during their recovery. Marissa T., Melis-

sa B., and Holly T. have stepped forward and vol-

unteered to spend time with some of these patients.

The CIS community is proud of these three stu-

dents, and we appreciate that Health City has made

it possible for students at CIS to have a profound

impact on the lives of

others.

Grade 6 Visits the National Weather Centre

On Wednesday the grade 6 Geography class visited the National Weather Centre as part of their study on

climate and weather. The students were intrigued by

all of the technology used to predict and forecast the

weather. The favorite part of the trip was looking at the huge hydrogen filled weather balloon, that is re-

What is your background and heritage?

Born, blood, and raised Caymanian.

Which countries have you lived in?

I’ve only ever lived in Grand Cayman.

How long have you been living in the Cayman Islands?

I’ve lived in Cayman all my life.

How many years have you been at CIS?

I’ve attended CIS for four years now.

Describe yourself (At least a few of your best and worst personality traits)

I think I can be pretty open-minded and accepting, but I can easily be very stubborn.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Why?

At the risk of being lame, if I could have any superpower, I would definitely want the ability to travel between this world and the fic-

tional, two-dimensional ones explored in the books I read. Aside from the obvious fact that the real world tends get very boring very

quickly, I’m most tempted by the idea of being able to see these fantastical places in person, and meet these characters who I’ve seen

(or “seen,” really) develop and grow overtime.

If you could eat dinner with any 3 people (deceased or alive) who would they be?

Jimmy Fallon, Emma Stone, and Jon Stewart.

What is one quality you admire most in others?

Confidence is probably one of the qualities I most admire when I see it another person. Perhaps it’s more envy than it is admiration for

the trait every now and then, but I sincerely value the some people are able to respect themselves, and be honest with themselves

about where they may or may not stand in this world, and still come out strongly. Being able to keep positive and be motivated by the

thought that you will do well in what is you are trying to accomplish goes a very long way.

Do you want to be famous? Why/Why not?

I want to be successful in life and in the things I do; I’d like to be a published novelist, I’d like to be recognised as professional singer

and performer. However, I’m not entirely sure if I’d enjoy fame all that much. Especially since I, you know, hate pictures . . .

What is your favourite quote? Why?

“Because even the smallest of words can be the ones to hurt you, or save you.” (Natsuki Takaya) Aside from being a line from one of

my favourite books, I believe these words are true, because it’s the little things that can have the greatest impact on us.

What is your dream job/career? Why?

I’d love to be a singer/song-writer or author, or both. I’m very passionate about both fields because they allow me to express myself,

plus they motivate me to do well in areas of my academic life, or just life in general.

Dear Parents,

CIS will be holding the annual Cayman Cultural Day on Tuesday, December 2nd. Our celebration this year will

again involve students participating in historical and modern traditions in their classrooms; leading up to the

day itself on Tuesday where they can witness aspects come alive.

The emphasis on our Cayman Cultural Day will be on arts and crafts, traditional dance, and the significance of

silver thatch, coconuts and their uses, plus more. On Wednesday, December 3rd, Grades 2-5 will have Gimistory

storytellers present to them.

As we all are part of the tradition in some way or another, we encourage you to get involved. We are asking

for parent volunteers who might be able to supply traditional Cayman food for the students to taste or present

on a significant aspect from the Caymanian culture.
