What is Service Learning?

Service Learning is more than just simple volunteering. It is a way of teaching and learning that connects positive and meaningful action in the community with academic learning, personal growth, and civic responsibility. Service Learning helps develop citizenship and good character while providing direct connections to the academic curriculum.

What makes it different from Volunteering?

It involves Investigation, Preparation and Planning, Action, Reflection, and Demonstration. The entire process is what sets it apart from volunteering, as does the Reflection part.

What does not earn service hours?

Doing work for For-Profit business/agencies. Teaching about a religious organization, vacation

Bible School, participating in a religious activity, or assisting in the nursery during worship/religious teaching.

Childcare and Elder-care Services for family, friends, or neighbors, or at For-Profit agencies.

Not earn Part 2

Regular Club meeting hours or fundraising for the club. Sports and Performing Arts Organization that charge

tuition or for-profit camps. Court Mandated Service Politics in the form of protests, strikes, or rallies. Also

work for political candidates or parties or special interests.

When can I start?

Students may begin documenting hours beginning the first day of school in 9th grade, and may continue their work during the following summers.

How do Students Get Account Activated?

Students set up account online with www.X2VOL. They can begin to submit their hours once they set up the X2VOL account.

Account Part 2

They fill out Service Learning Approval Form. They put their information, and the different components of the project --- Investigation, Planning/Preparation, Action, Reflection, and Demonstration. There are helpful hints on the form.

Account Part 3

They will get the SL Provider or Advisor to fill out their information, and to make sure that student gets signatures from self, Parent, and Advisor.

They need to complete the SL Student Log, and put down the dates and activities performed. They need to get the hours initialed and signed by Supervisor.

Students will turn in completed Approval Form and completed Student Log to Rubenstein or Lindsay.

How Earn Exemplary Award?

Students would need to complete a minimum of 100 hours in their community throughout high school. Suggestion: Earn 25 hours per year in high school.

For IB students when can they start collecting CAS hours?

Students may begin documenting hours beginning the first day of school in 11th grade, and may continue their work during the following summers.

How Earn SL Diploma?

Students would need to complete 250 hours or more.

Suggestion: Earn 50 hours 9th grade,

75 hours 10th grade, 75 hours 11th grade, 50 hours 12th grade.

Some Tips from our SL Director Ms. Lindsay

It is very important that the SL Application and log sheets are completed.

Students need to complete SL forms for outside agencies; an application must be completed for each SL agency they volunteer at.

A log sheet must be completed for hours (monthly, quarterly or yearly)

Tips from Ms. Lindsay Part 3

Please do not log individual hours. Group them monthly, quarterly or yearly. Then log and turn in the log sheet.

Use the last date of the log with total hours when inputting in X2Vol. Student needs to use comment section to denote date from to end date and total hours.

The SL contact provider must verify in X2Vol. No signature for contact provider is needed on the form, but contact provider information must be completed.

Students do not need to complete an SL form for in-house groups.

For example, HPC Club SL projects/events or HPC school SL projects/events. Students are encouraged to keep a log, so when they input their hours in X2VOL, they can do all the hours for November or December.

Please make sure that students do not use a school club for their personal outside agencies; unless the whole club is doing an event with an agency – then the advisor would verify in the system.
