From the DP Desk
As the year draws to a close it is important to remember that students are still required to focus on learning activities – and attend school. If your child is absent or late you must provide them with a note giving a valid reason for your child’s absence. Include their year, name and date of absence – this helps our office staff ensure entry details are accurate in attendance records.
If your child has been sick and not been able to attend school, make sure they only return when they are well. If they come back too early, they can become even more ill and also risk making others around them sick.
As the weather warms up, students in Term 4 & Term 1 2020 are required to wear summer uniform and the pleasure of wearing shorts. Remember, there are shorts available for girls to make for greater comfort in the hot weather and when engaging in activities on the farm or in practical subjects. And a reminder to students to wear sport uniform on Wednesdays only – students should wear school uniform to school and change on other days.
Term 4 will be another busy term as final assessments take place and teachers evaluate student learning – and write reports. Reports will be available in the last week of school through the Sentral portal. Please check you have access and contact the school if this is an issue for you.
As always, our role as deputies is to support the welfare and wellbeing of our students, including their safety. So make sure you keep aware of any potential hazards around school – and let us know. Better to have informed us than to suffer an injury.
A reminder to Year 11 students arriving early for extra classes; please enter by the railway pedestrian gate. While the library/donut quad gate is usually open by 7:30am, there are some occasions access is not possible. If this gate is closed, go to the pedestrian gate.
Last reminder:
The last day of term for students 2019 is Wednesday 18 December 2019.
For your diaries Years 7, 11 and 12 return Wednesday 29 January 2020.
All students attend Thursday 30 January 2020.

Exam Stress - Special Report
Students in their final year of school are considered a high-risk group for depression and anxiety. Sleep deprivation, diet and social media are some of the biggest issues faced by this group of teens. Therefore it is vitally important that a student's mental health is looked after as well as their physical health. Keeping things in perspective for students and parents alike, can help prevent everyone getting overwhelmed. Although this final year is important, it is not necessarily the most important year of your child's life.
There are many strategies that students can implement to help themselves. Parents can provide support, not only emotionally, but also practically by keeping their child well-nourished and encouraging physical activity.
In this special report, parents will find useful tips to support their child during this often stressful time. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered here and we always welcome your feedback. If you do have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information. HAHS—Leadership
Prefect Executive
Hello there!
We’re the Hurlstone Prefects and we would just like to say a very warm Hello, and introduce ourselves officially to the Hurlstone Community!
Throughout the rest of 2019 and 2020, we are very excited to be work-ing towards our goal of “YOUnity”. We want to foster a school environ-ment that is all about the students, and for the students, (YOU) and also work towards a cohesive school community and one where all students feel as though they belong and are a true part of the Hurlstone Commu-nity (Unity).
We hope that over the next year, the entirety and Hurlstone School Community, including students, teachers, staff and parents, can help us work towards this goal. We are looking forward to a busy and amazing year with some exciting new initiatives, and some old favorites as well.
GRIP Student Leadership Conference:
On Wednesday 6 November 2019, our Captains, Ella, Abdul, Olivia, and Wesley, and Vice-Captains, Aimy and Antriksh, attended the GRIP Student Leadership Conference at the Quay Centre at Sydney Olympic Park. It was a fun-filled day for us all with informative sessions mixed in with fun games, and times to network with leadership teams from other schools across the state.
We began the morning with a seminar about setting our Leadership Priorities and another about Making our Meetings More Effective. After morning tea we went to a seminar about Generosity, before splitting off into two different sessions, Leading Exciting Events, and Leading a Team of our Peers. After lunch, we split off once again into the seminars, Leading with Engaging Experiences, and Leading in Positive Partnership with Teachers.
It was a very busy day, but the skills that we gained, and the ideas that we left the event with were Invaluable. Throughout the day we were also able to exchange contacts with other schools attending and made hopeful plans to run some inter-school initiatives, along with the annual Prefect Afternoon Tea events, which run throughout the year.
We’re definitely looking forward to implementing these key lessons from the conference back into our leadership here at Hurlstone!
That’s all from us!
Sincerely,
The Hurlstone Prefects 2019-2020

Year 9 Barangaroo Excursion
On Thursday 17 October Year 9 HSIE classes A, N and G went to Barangaroo to conduct field work relevant to the Changing Places topic within the Geography Syllabus. Classes S and U conducted their field work on Tuesday 29 October.
The field work involved a guided tour around the Barangaroo development with teachers from “Observatory Hill Environmental Education Centre”. Over the course of the excursion students were given the opportunity to refine their key geographical skills such as; mapping, taking GPS coordinates, field observation, water testing, light intensity (lux) testing and surveying members of the public on how they view and utilise the public spaces within Barangaroo.
Students also learnt about the planning process that was developed to organise the urban rejuvenation of the Barangaroo site and engaged with the debate between the relevant stakeholders on how the site should be developed and managed. In particular, this involved the public and heritage housing in and around Millers’ point.
The students will demonstrate the practical geographic skills they developed through this excursion with a presentation in class conducted later in the term on evaluating the social, economic and environmental sustainability of Barangaroo.
Overall, year 9 engaged in a real world, collaborative learning opportunity that refined their skills in geographical processes and engaged them with contemporary issues affecting the city of Sydney.

Regional Final of the Legacy Junior Public Speaking Competition
On the 27 August, we attended the Regional Final of the Legacy Junior Public Speaking Competition at The Arts Unit in Lewisham.
The experience was very educational and show cased the extremely high standards of the speeches presented. All participants were eloquently spoken and presented their perspectives on a range of global issues. The diversity and depth of concerns covered allowed myself and Evelyn to learn and grow from the experience. In fact I am proud to say that I have been successful in being chosen to participate in the State semi-finals coming soon. I look forward to representing HAHS and doing my best in both prepared and impromptu speeches.
I’d like to thank Ms Sproule for all of the hard work she has put in to ensure I have this opportunity.

Extracurricular - Mathematics
APSMO The Australasian Problem Solving Mathematics Olympiad (APSMO) came to a conclusion late in Term 3. 47 students completed 25 questions in 5 rounds of 5 questions on different occasions from May to September. Team results were taken from the top 10 students in each team. Hurlstone’s Year 8 team came in the top 5% of teams across Australasia, and our Year 7 team was in the top 20%.
Top performers were Shammao Bhuiyan and Raymond Ton from Year 8, and Lucas Dinh-Tram from Year 7. All individuals who finished in the top 20% will receive awards, and all students who completed the Olympiad will receive certificates at year meetings before the end of term.
The APSMO is open to all Year 7 and 8 students, so hopefully all of this year’s Year 7 participants will be back next year, with extra participants in 2020.

World’s Greatest Shave
On Friday the 30 August Hurlstone Agricultural students engaged with the World’s Greatest Shave to raise money for the Leukaemia foundation.
Leukaemia is a cancer of the body's blood-forming tissues, which include bone marrow and the lymphatic system. Leukaemia usually involves the white blood cells which are potent infection fighters — they normally grow and divide in an orderly way, as the body needs them. However, in people with leukaemia, the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells, which don't function properly. Treatment for leukaemia can be complex - depending on the type of leukaemia and other factors. As a result fundraising efforts are vital to try and find cures and preventative measures for this illness.
This year fourteen students shaved their heads and twelve students cut 36 centre metres of hair to raise money for research. Through their combined efforts the Hurlstone Community raised over $10000.00 for the Leukaemia foundation!! This is an amazing achievement and has eclipsed last year’s efforts considerably.
The coordination for the event was organised by Hurlstone’s INTERACT Club
and students are invited to attend their meetings every Wednesday Recess
in the Dance Studio if they are interested in similar initiatives.

P&C
On Saturday 7 September we had our 80th Country Fair. We had an excellent turnout even though Hurricane Hurlstone did visit us, though the wind did not defeat us.
The P&C would sincerely like to thank all the staff, students and parents who helped on the day. It meant a lot to have the Hurlstone community come together to make this day successful.
We had our biggest White Elephant stall ever. We also received donations from Bunnings, Club Liverpool, Sam’s Country Growers, Coles, Woolworths and so much more for our Auction.
We had many fun activities, including Thomas the Tank train ride, Haunted House, face painting, Lego workshops and the Boarder hotdog and milkshake stall.
Many Alumni visitors came in to see their old school. We were honoured to have Alumni Dr Cameron Archer and Jo Palmer open the Country Fair on behalf of the school.
The band “Elevator District” performed free of charge. Special thanks go to Alumni Oliver Quirk and Krisha Umali for encouraging their band’s involvement.
Overall it was a great day to see old friends and our community celebrate together, making our Country Fair great.
Look forward to our 81st Country Fair 2020.
