Letter from the Parent Office

Dear Parents and Families:

I’d like to welcome all of our new parents and families into the Northeastern community, as well as welcome back our current ones!

It was a pleasure seeing so many families reconnecting with their students at this fall’s Parent & Family Weekend! To those who participated, thank you for being so engaged in all of the presentations, activities, and events. Your excitement, good conversations, smiles and laughter, all lent to the overall success of the weekend! If you were unable to join us and would like to view President Aoun’s session, please click here and enter password: parents.

As a reminder to all families, the Office of Student Orientation and Parent/Family Programs is here to assist you in making connections with the university and its resources. We assist and support families with a broad spectrum of issues—academic, administrative, and personal, no matter if your student is on campus, abroad, or on co-op. We strive to keep parents/families informed, connected, and engaged, not only with the university but also with each other – parent to parent.

If you have any questions or if I can be of any assistance, please contact me at [email protected] or by calling 800.696.6516.

Sincerely,

Susan Brown Associate DirectorOffice of Student Orientation and Parent/Family Programs northeastern.edu/parents

Off Campus Student ServicesPARENT MATTERS

Is your student living off campus this year? Off Campus Student Services is available to help students have a successful off campus experience.

In the City of Boston, landlords are responsible for complying with certain Rental Delivery Unit Standards, which can be found here. Watch for fine print or addendums to the lease that might state otherwise. Boston also has an ordinance that no more than four undergraduate students can reside together, regardless of size of unit.

Students looking to live off-campus for a more “independent” college experience may not recognize the additional responsibilities entailed. Student tenants must be prepared to pay their monthly rent on time, plus utilities such as electricity, cable/internet, and heat. Equally important, the university expects all students to be respectful of our city neighbors by residing peacefully in the local neighborhoods surrounding campus.

Students should develop a good relationship with their landlord from the beginning; if problems arise during the tenancy, it’s helpful to be in good standing with the property owner. If your student or one of their roommates plans to sublet during the year, written permission must first be obtained from the landlord. After a sub-lessee is found, the original tenants are still responsible for ensuring the rent is paid and all terms of the lease are upheld.

To help off-campus students stay connected to campus, our student Community Ambassadors create programming and maintain communication between the off-campus community and campus.

In addition to on campus resources, Boston has city services to assist renters in navigating conversations with landlords and property managers. The City of Boston has a non-emergency phone number and app, BOS:311, so students may easily communicate with city services. More info may be found at cityofboston.gov/311/.

Information from Housing Services

If your upper-class student needs to stay on campus through winter break, they’ll receive a survey at the end of October.

> Halls close at noon on December 20. If your student is on campus until then, we encourage them to cheer on Northeastern’s Men’s Ice Hockey and Men’s and Women’s Basketball as they take on Michigan State University on December 18 and 19!

> If your student is changing rooms from fall to spring, they’ll want to take everything home with them and check out with their hall staff. If they are not changing rooms, your student will just need to bring home what they need for the winter.

> Students should be aware of the expectations on how to leave their room (unplugging electronics, locking windows, emptying trash, etc) over break. Hall staff will begin posting important information in late November.

> Information about the Room Selection Process for 2016-2017 will be sent to students in December!

STUDENT SPOTLIGHTReprinted from News@Northeastern

That’s the message of a new campus-wide

student initiative to eliminate single-use

plastic bottles at Northeastern and further

the university’s efforts to sustain the health

of the environment.

Alec Stransky, SSH’18, created the “NU Day, Same Bottle” campaign, which asks

members of the entire university community

to pledge to reduce their use of single-use

plastic bottles. Another campaign goal is

to eliminate the offering of drinks in plastic

bottles at student-organized events.

Stransky is working in collaboration

with Northeastern’s Student Government

Association and the Husky Environmental

Action Team. He has also received support

from international non-profit organizations

including Bureo Skate boards.

“I’m just generally disheartened by being a bystander and seeing society knowingly destroy itself,” said Stransky.

“I want this campaign to make a change at Northeastern and provide an opportunity for the community to be exposed to the full environmental impacts of such a simplistic product.”

One of the first Northeastern student groups

to sign on to Stransky’s campaign was the

Peer Health Exchange at Northeastern,

which works to give teenagers the

knowledge and skills they need to make

healthy decisions.

“Our volunteers are socially aware, conscientious of their environment, and value change that positively impacts our community,” Northeastern PHE co-

coordinators Aaron Yagoda and Candice

Quarella, both BHS’16, said in an email.

“To no surprise, our chapter will support this initiative wholeheartedly. Making this pledge is an easy way to reduce our carbon footprint and lead by example. We encourage all student groups on campus to do the same.”

Stransky got the idea for “NU Day, Same Bottle” while planning an event for Delta

Tau Delta Fraternity and deciding it wouldn’t

offer drinks that come in plastic bottles.

Stransky said he felt he could grow this

into a campus-wide initiative because using

fewer plastic bottles is simple to do given

the large amount of

refill stations around campus.

“Every day you see people guzzle through multiple plastic bottles,” he said. “And I understand people won’t avoid using plastic bottles entirely, but they don’t have to go through five in one day.”

Stransky has penned pledges for both

individuals and student groups to sign. He

officially launched the campaign last month,

and hopes to have at least 200 student

groups sign the pledge by December.

“I want the Northeastern student body to be a leader not just in reducing plastic bottle use, but also in gaining a deeper understanding of product lifestyles,” Stransky noted. “This campaign will hopefully educate the community on how simple, unceremonious daily routines have a large impact on the environment and our own health.”

University Health and Counseling Services

University Health and Counseling Services (UHCS) sent health reports to all incoming students earlier this year. This health report includes documentation of the immunizations required by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Massachusetts state law requires all students studying in the Commonwealth to provide this information to their schools. Students who are non-compliant with these requirements will have a “Hold” placed on their student account preventing them from accessing grades or transcripts and registering for classes, among other activities.

If your student has not submitted their record (or if their record is incomplete), they will receive emails from UHCS detailing what is missing and how they can rectify the situation. As students’ immunization records are considered protected health information, we can communicate only with the students directly, not with their parents.

Please ask your students if they have received any emails from UHCS. If they have, please ask them to send us their health reports right away.

Flu Vaccine

The 2015-2016 Seasonal Influenza Vaccine is available at UHCS. We invite students to stop by UHCS to get vaccinated. The vaccine is FREE to all students.

STUDENTS MAY STOP BY UHCS FOR THE FLU VACCINE DURING THESE HOURS:

Tuesday 4–8 p.m. Thursday 5–8 p.m. Friday 8 a.m.–12 p.m. Saturday 12–4 p.m.

More information is available here.
