The New QCE
� 2019 - Year 11 students in all sectors of education across Queensland engaged in new senior system.
� Most significant change in the senior phase of education since the 1970s.
� Key changes:� the introduction of common external assessment
� a strengthening of both quality and comparability in school-based assessment
� movement from the Overall Position (OP) to the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)
Underpinning factors behind
change� A 2014 Australian Council for Education Research
(ACER) report recommended:
� changes to achieve greater rigour, new taxonomy and greater opportunities for students to succeed in study and work life beyond schooling
� moving away 100% school based assessment to a model that will include three(3) endorsed school based assessments (IA) and one(1) external assessment (EA).
� alignment with other states across nation in the issuing of a reliable ATAR score for tertiary entrance

How is the ATAR calculated?

ATAR calculation is the responsibility of QTAC (Queensland Tertiary
Admissions Centre)
Internal Assessment (IA)
� General subjects in Unit 3 and 4 contain three(3) IA Items
� For Mathematics and Science subjects the culminated score for the IA = 50% of the total ATAR contribution
� For all other syllabus subjects, the culminated score for the IA = 75% of the total ATAR contribution
External Assessment� Occurs in Term 4, 2020 (commencing week 4)
� Duration – approximately 17 days
� Contributes between 25-50% of the students overall ATAR
