What is the Achievement Gap?

When children enter kindergarten, there are already significant differences in literacy and math skills between children of low, middle and high socio-economic status (SES).

On average, children from low-income families show much less developed skills in the main areas necessary for success in kindergarten and beyond.

Creating the Urgency

• In addition to having families sign the Parent Involvement Contract we explain to families WHY their partnership is so critical to promoting positive student outcomes

• Understanding the research of the Achievement Gap creates a sense of urgency for families and motivates them to engage as partners in our HS/EHS programs.

Four family practices to help close the achievement gap

1. Family Routines: Establish consistent family routines that help your child learn to regulate his/her behavior.

2. Positive Discipline: Re-direct children by explaining what you would like him or her TO DO and why it is important instead of simply saying what NOT to do.

that will help pay f or each students’ end of

the year t-shirt.

Pop cans can be brought to the End of the

Year celebration f or your child’s classroom.

*I f each student brings 50 cans the cost of the t-shirts will be covered

Summer Celebrations

• Activities will continue throughout the summer

• PFCE staff will be meeting individually with all new Head Start and blended GSRP families

• Summer welcoming picnics will continue to have a 50th year celebration theme.
