There are 25 places available (on a first come first served basis). To apply for the course, click on the link below.

Supporting children and young people online

As our students continue to work online at home it is important that they do this in a safe way. One of the easiest

ways to do this is by setting age-appropriate parental controls on digital devices and use internet filters to block malicious websites. These are usually free, but often need to be turned on.

There are a number of useful resources which can support parents and carers to keep their children safe online:

Advice from the National Crime Agency to stay safe online

Website: Thinkyouknow

Provides age-specific online safety checklists, guides on how to set parental controls on a range of devices, and a host of practical tips to help children get the most out of their digital world.

Website: Internet matters

A collaboration between ParentZone and the NCA providing support and guidance for parents from leading experts and organisations

Website: Parent info

Support for parents and carers to keep their children safe online, including tips to keep primary aged children safe online.

Website: LGfL

Support for parents and carers from the NSPCC, including a guide to social networks, apps and games

Website: Net-aware

Offers a toolkit to support parents and carers of children of any age to start discussions about their online life, to set boundaries around online behaviour and technology use, and to find out where to get more help and support.

Website: Childnet

Has advice for parents and carers to keep children safe from online radicalisation

Website: Let’s Talk About It

Has tips, advice, guides and other resources to help keep children safe online, including parental controls offered by home internet providers and safety tools on social networks and other online services.

Wellbeing

Supporting children and young people’s wellbeing

This is a difficult time for everyone and one of the ways COVID-19 can have an effect is on our mental health and wellbeing. Public Health England have produced guidance on how parents and carers can look after the mental

health and wellbeing of their children. This includes advice on: 1. Looking after your own mental health

2. Helping children and young people cope with stress

3. How children and young people of different ages may react

4. Bullying

5. Money worries

6. Where to get further support

This can be accessed here. We would also like to remind you and your child of some of the local and national services available to them. These are:

KOOTH - Kooth.com is an online counselling, advice and

support service for young people aged 11-18 within the local area. It provides a safe, secure means of accessing help via the internet from professional team of counsellors.

BUZZ US - Compass BUZZ offers a confidential text messaging service to young people aged 11-18 across North Yorkshire. The service was named in conjunction with young people and is called BUZZ US. By texting the service on 07520 631168 you will be able to receive confidential advice, support and signposting

from a wellbeing worker within one working day via text.

JustB have also set up a helpline if you would like to talk.

They have a helpline for children, young people and adults across the Harrogate District who may be struggling or feeling anxious about the COVID-19 virus.

Available 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week.

Maths Puzzler

Last week’s solution:

Draw 6 rings, each ring must enclose some of the numbers above.

The sum of the numbers inside each ring must be a different square number.

This week’s puzzle:

Kakura: Just like in sudoku, fill in the grid with the digits from 1 to 9. Each

group of digits must add up to the number that is just to the left or above it. No group can repeat the same digit twice. Although they are aligned vertically or horizontally, a group does not

necessarily span the whole column or row. This means that although you may not repeat a digit within a group, you may repeat it within a column or row. There is no requirement to use all of the digits.

Photography Competition

Leeds Trinity University’s Photography department have launched an exciting competition for aspiring photographers currently at Sixth Form. They are challenging you to create a project that responds to the theme of Environment. This could mean different things to different people and is open for interpretation. They are asking for a set of images that work well together, show your technical ability and most importantly your ideas and creativity! You can use the equipment you have available to you such as a smartphone or

DSLR and they would encourage you to explore their capabilities.

All entries will be reviewed and finalists will be selected by industry experts and Leeds Trinity University lecturers Verity Adriana and Liza Dracup. As a finalist your work will feature on the University’s social media pages, so it will be seen by thousands of people. They will also be organising an exhibition of the finalist’s images, online and in due course are planning an exhibition at the University where one winner will receive a Snap Touch Camera and two runners up will receive £30 amazon voucher.

Please be safe, only produce imagery that ensures you can be safe, consider the safety and health of others

and follow the current government regulations. Just submit up to five images and a two hundred word statement explaining your project all on one PDF or Word document via the Leeds Trinity Website to https://www.leedstrinity.ac.uk/photo-competition/ by 5pm on August 28th 2020.

The winning entries will be announced on Friday October 2nd 2020.

Please include your name, college and any social media handles you would like us to use. We can’t wait to see your images, so get snapping!

New Competition – Visions of a World After COVID-19

A fantastic opportunity to get your creative juices flowing! This competition, run by UCL openDemocracy, is
