INFORMATION NIGHT
PITTSGROVE TOWNSHIP
SCHOOL DISTRICT
JANUARY 12, 2016
In 2015, New Jersey adopted the Partnership for
Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers
(PARCC) to replace HSPA and previous assessments in the
elementary and middle school in language arts and
mathematics.
Students took PARCC English Language Arts and
Literacy Assessments (ELA/L) in grades 3 – 11 .
Students took PARCC Mathematics Assessments in
grades 3 – 8 and End of Course Assessments in Algebra I,
Geometry, and Algebra II.
NEW JERSEY’S STATEWIDE
ASSESSMENT PROGRAM
Designed to measure the state standards that
are guiding instruction in Mathematics and
English Language Arts.
Focus on the skills students need in today’s
world, including critical-thinking, problem-
solving, and reasoning.
Because the PARCC tests measure these
complex skills, which are different from
previous state tests, scores on the PARCC test
will look lower.
SETTING A NEW BASELINE WITH PARCC
PARCC is one way to satisfy the assessment
graduation requirement.
Other graduation assessments (using NJDOE
target/threshold scores): ACT
Accuplacer
ASVAB-AFQT
PSAT
SAT
Meet the criteria of the NJDOE Portfolio Appeal
CLASSES OF 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019:
ASSESSMENT GRADUATION REQUIREMENT
In sum, State law and regulations require
all students to take State assessments. It is
important to note that, although we have
provided alternative ways for students to
demonstrate the statewide assessment
competencies required under State law for
demonstrating proficiency for graduation
during the transition to a new standardized
test, students are still expected to participate
in the statewide assessment program.
NJ REQUIREMENTS REGARDING
STATEWIDE ASSESSMENTS
TEST ADMINISTRATION IN 2015
1.2 million students in one day
204,000 students in one hour
Peak: 1million testers per day x 5 days
Thousands of hours contributed by thousands of educators to develop
the test

NEXT STEPS
Identify 1-2 standards in both Math and English Language
Arts/Literacy upon which to focus this year.
Supervisors are working with teachers during Department
meetings to:
Analyze data.
Develop activities, strategies, and plans to address standards
and areas in which we want to improve.
Provide students with additional PARCC sample questions.
