RABBI’S SHABBAT MESSAGE
The book of Devarim – Deuteronomy –has an obsession. While the Torah is filled with the mission of removing idolatry from the midst of the Jewish
people the book of Devarim takes this to new heights.
It would be true that Judaism emerged as a unique form of monotheism. While other cultures may have had central gods, only in Judaism did we find the eradication of all ‘others’, and the prohibition of graven images. However the real world implementation proved to be more tricky: Devarim struggles
with getting the Jewish people on message with this. Thus, the commandment to remove and destroy all places of idolatry are numerous in this book, and from this morning’s reading – presumably, because this was
the most pressing issue of its time.
