As human beings we will have to make some decisions, fast if we want to protect our future. We all have basic needs and those needs include more than food, clothing and shelter. That does not change the fact that we are responsible for accelerating in this time, and we can undo the damage if we work hard enough. Detractors love to remind us that global warming is not new--- it has been happening for thousands of years—it happened before, when humans were not even around, and it will happen again. That does not change the fact that we are responsible for accelerating in this time, and we can undo the damage if we work hard enough. Recently, Time Magazine deemed the rapid overall temperature incrase to be an emergency condition. Action needs to be taken. Now!

There is much that we as individuals can do to stop global warming. For one thing, we can stop global warming by conserving energy. How can you conserve energy? Just join the office car pool, walk or cycle instead of using your car for short journeys. Use public tansport. Fit low energy bulbs in every room. B. Read the ff. excerpt from “Global Warming” in the Earth Observatoty

(http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/) and paraphrase the text.

1. Throughout its long history, Earth has warmed and cooled time and again. Climate has changed when the planet received more or less sunlight due to subtle shifts in its orbit, as the atmosphere or surface change, or when the Sun’s energy varied. But in the past century, another force has started to influence Earth’s climate: humanity.

2. Global warming is the unusually rapid increase in Earth’s average surface temperature over the past century primarily due to the greenhouse gases released by people burning fossil fuels.

3. In Earth’s history before the Industrial Revolution, Earth’s climate changed due to natural causes unrelated to human activity. These natural causes are still in play today, but their influence is too small or they occur too slowly to explain the rapid warming seen in recent decades.

C. Read the ff. paragraph and make a summary.

Climate change to make 2010 the warmest year in record?(An excerpt)

Posted by Ned Haluzan in Climate Change

Many climate change scientist predict that 2012 would be the hottest year in recorded history. Many people will see that this will not be the case, especially given the very cold winter in Europe and North America, but we must not forget that climate change is global phenomenon, and therefore if we look at the global data we can see that period from January to March was one of the seven warmest starts to the year on record.

The data gathered from NASA also shows that global temperatures, averaged over the past 12 months, were the warmest 130 years. And the warming trend looks very likely to continue for the rest of the year. According to Vicky Poe, head of climate change advice at the Met Office, the year 2010 has therefore more than a 50% change of being the warmest on record.
