  • ParaPedia featured artiCle: table tiPPing Table tipping or sometimes called table tilting, is a Spiritualist technique during a sance to communicate with spirits. Sitters are evenly placed around a table, sitting with their fingertips lightly resting on the top edge. One of the sitters acts as the spokesperson, asking a spirit to make contact. The table may start tilting, shaking, and even rising. One of the main attractions of this method today, is that a medium is not required. Like the Ouija board, however, this crude method is subject to criticism as nothing more than sub-conscious influence.

    History

Table tipping became very popular in the mid-1800s with the rise of spiritualism in America. The Fox sisters, having their table not only move, but also provided rapping noises as answers to their questions, perfected this technique. [1] Spreading to England in 1853, it was taken seriously by the British, when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were convinced that their table tipping experience was real. [2]

Another famous national medium of the 1850s was Daniel Dunglas Home, who was classified as either a gifted psychic or a fantastic magician. He was claimed to move 100-pound tables into the air,

Many mediums used this technique during the Spiritualist movement, however, were proven to be fraudulent, such as using their foot as in this picture.

  • performing for such notorieties as Robert and Elizabeth Browning, Napoleon III, and Czar Alexander II. Professor David Wells of Harvard, tried to disprove his talents, however, didnt witness any fraud-ulent activity while he and two colleagues, in a well-lit room, sat on top of a table during Homes sance, as it tilted and levitated. [3]

In the early 1900s, medium Eusapia Paladino was proven to be a fraud in her table tilting techniques. When her legs were not tied to her chair, it was witnessed that she would lift the table with her knees. [4] With more in-depth investigations, many mediums were found to be fraudulent in their tech-niques, and table tipping became more of an entertaining home-circle parlor game.

    Scientific Theories

Michael Faradays investigations led to the decline of table tippings popularity.

Michael Faraday was one of the most brilliant of the 19th Century scientists. He took an interest in the fad of table tipping after some other scientists proposed that the reason it worked was because of a mysterious magnetic or electrical force. Faraday disagreed and instead theorized that the force at work in table tilting was an involuntary and unconscious muscle contraction experienced by sance sitters. This, he believed, was what caused the tables to rock and tilt. [5]

Scientists called this unconscious muscular activity of the people with their fingertips on the table, ectenic force. [6] Modern parapsychologists state that such table tipping phenomena isnt caused by spirits, but produced by telekinesis of one or more of the sitters. [7]

Kenneth Batcheldor, a British psychologist involved in the study of psychokinesis (PK), has investi-gated the phenomenon under experimental control. He has shown that PK can be started deliberately, yet secretly, by shoving the table manually. The table moved on its own afterwards, started by what he called artifact induction. He believes it works because of its impact on the belief-system of the sitters. Having been fooled by the fake movement, the sitters overcome their skepticism and are free to produce their own genuine effects. [8]
