APT was founded by a group of connoisseurs, ably guided by senior vidwans for showcasing talents, nurturing and fostering them. APT has been conducting concerts by upcoming and young talented artists - Vocal and Instrumental. APT now feels elated to present a series titled ‘PARAMPARA.’ This six day event will be presented by disciples of senior vidwans. Commencing with Nadaswaram by a student of Vyasarpadi Kothandaraman, the six day event will be vibrant and dynamic with the students of Smt. Suguna Varadachary, Sangita Kalanidhi Padmabhushan Sri. T. GURU-SHISHYA PARAMPARA, the teacher - disciplelineage, in our country is one of the most respected systemsworld-wide. Guru’s role is directive and interactive. Guruhelps a student to construct knowledge rather than reproduce.

This excellent and unique system of Guru-Shishya tradition,lineage or PARAMPARA has been successfully working inour Carnatic music, proof being a succession of teachersand disciples. We have had this rich tradition from Musiri,GNB, Chembai, Semmangudi and MLV schools and has nowpercolated to the new generation of vidwans whopainstakingly teach the students in order to keep up thisPARAMPARA.

This PARAMPARA in Carnatic music has been universallyappreciated since at advanced stages of learning, GURU-SHISHYA PARAMPARA becomes learning on one-to-one

basis.This system,acclaimed worldwide,has been an effectivemedium to preserve ourrich culture andheritage.

We, at APT, considerthis as very sacred andholy. With this view, wewish to encourage

SHISHYAs by giving them opportunities to perform.

With this initiative, this year, we present PARAMPARA 2015a six day event organised from 1st of Nov. to the 6th of Nov.at Arkay Convention Hall, Mylapore, Chennai. Details ofdaily concerts are given at the respective Shishyas pagefollowing this preamble.

GURU : VyasarpadiG Kothandaraman

A dedicated artiste and teacher, SriKothandaraman had his training from hisfather Thirupulivanam Gopalaswami. Laterwhen he was a student at the Govt. MusicCollege, Adyar, he had advanced trainingunder the famed guru Thiruvarur LatchappaPillai.

A recipient of Kalki Memorial award, SriKothandaraman is known for bringing outthe sahitya bhava in the lyrics ofcompositions. He has led a group of 35nadaswaram vidwans and 25 thavil vidwans in a unique concert at SriShanmukhananda Sabha in Mumbai. He also learnt to play the thavil.Teaching a host of students, Sri Kothandaraman continues to lead thePARAMPARA.

Mylai M. Karthikeyan - Nadaswaram

Initially trained under his father Mylai S. Mohanraj, young nadaswaramvidwan M. Karthikeyan holds a diploma, Vadya Visarada from the Govt.Music College, Adyar.

Karthikeyan is a diciple of veteran nadaswaramvidwan Vyasarpadi Sri Kothandaraman.Following his guru's footsteps, Karthikeyan playsthe nadaswaram with sahitya bhava.

GURUS : Sruthi Laya Samrat Sri U.P. Raju andSmt. Nagamani Raju

A rare husband-wife combination inCarnatic music, both Mandolin Raju andhis wife Nagamani had rigorous trainingthrough the traditional gurukulam system.Sri Raju had his training under Late Sri.R. Subbaraju, who was instrumental inintroducing the Western instrumentMandolin to Carnatic music. Smt.Nagamani learnt from Sri U.P Raju. Thecouple are recipients of Yuva Kalabharathi,as award for young musicians.

Sri. Raju and Smt. Nagamani, togetherform a formidable Mandolin duo. Both

have jointly and individually won many prizes and awards. Keeping thePARAMPARA alive, the couple have been training many students in Indiaand abroad.

U. Jayavigneshwar - Mandolin

Master U. Jayavigneshwar is the son anddisciple of Mandolin couple Sri. U.P. Rajuand Smt. Nagamani. He is 10 years old andis studying in 6th standard in ChinmayaVidyalaya, Virugambakkam, Chennai.

Jayavigneshwar has played many concertsalong with his parents including theThyagaraja Aradhana in Thiruvaiyaru. Hehas so far performed nearly 25 soloconcerts in leading organisations.

Master Jayavigneshwar is a regularperformer in his school programmes. He is also learning vocal from Sri.P.B. Srirangachary.

GURUS : Sangeeta Shanmukha ManiSmt. Ranjani and Smt. Gayatri

Both vocalists and violinists, sistersSmt. Ranjani and Smt. Gayatri begantheir violin training at a very early agefrom Sangita Bhooshanam Prof. T.S.Krishnaswami at the ShanmukhanandaSangeeta Vidyalaya, Mumbai. Thesisters performed as violin duet artistesat a very young age and later provedsuccessful as violin accompanists.

They are popularly referred as RA-GA sisters.

Acquiring advanced training from Padma Bhushan and Sangita Kala AcharyaSri. P.S. Narayanaswamy, Ranjani and Gayatri began their vocalperformances since 1997. The sisters have won many awards and accoladesincluding Isai Peroli and Sangeeta Shanmukha Mani. Impressed by theirperformance, Sitar maestro Pt. Ravi Shankar that he organised a special oftheirs in Delhi.

Continuing the PARAMPARA, sisters Ranjani and Gayatri are teachingand training many students.

Krithika Natarajan - Vocal

Having learnt under illustrious gurus Sri. LalgudiG. Jayaraman and Dr. Manjula Sriram from ayoung age, Krithika is a B High Grade artiste ofAll India Radio, Chennai. She is presentlytraining under Smt. Ranjani and Smt. Gayatri.

Krithika has won many prizes including one forthe best raga alapana from Sri Krishna GanaSabha and another as Best Junior vocalist at SriThyaga Brahma Gana Sabha.

Krithika has performed in many leading sabhas in Chennai. Mysore, Mumbaiand Singapore.

GURU : Sangita Kalanidhi Smt. R. Vedavalli

Spotted by Madurai Srirangam Iyengar as a childprodigy, Smt. Vedavalli had the tutelage under thebrilliant Mudikondan Sri Venkatrama Iyer. She haswon several awards at a very young age includingone awarded by the President of India. She is alsoa trained in playing the veena.

As a rare privilege, she received the CentralGovernment scholarship for specialising in Padams,Javalis and Pallavis. She taught music in theTeacher's College of Music and served as professorof Vocal Music in the Govt. Music college, Adyar.Travelled widely across the globe, many of her

students are accomplished performers, researchers, writers and teachersmaintaining the PARAMPARA.

Archana and Aarathi - Vocal

The twins Archana and Aarathi aregreat grand nieces of renownedcomposer Sangita Kalanidhi LateSri Harikesanallur MuthiahBhagavathar and great granddaughters of Sangita KalanidhiJustice Late Sri T.L. VenkataramaIyer. They are disciples of SangitaKalanidhi Smt. R, Vedavalli.

Archana and Aarathi have won many prizes and have performed in manyleading cultural organisations across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnatakaand other places.

Recipients of Scholarship for training in Padams and Javalis from SangeetNatak Academy, they have received many titles and awards.

GURU : Smt. Lalitha Sivakumar

A committed teacher as well as acomposer, Smt. Lalitha Sivakumar is thedaughter of the Mridangam legend Sri.Palghat Mani Iyer and the daughter-in-law of eminent vocalist Smt. D KPattammal. Music naturally runs throughher blood. She has accompanied DKP inmany concerts.

Contented with teaching and advancedtraining of students, she is a greatcomposer too. She has set music tonumber of Krithis, Thillanas and Bhajans. Quoted as a wonderful guru byher daughter and student Smt. Nithyashree Mahadevan, she trains a numberof sishyas. Lavanya Sundarraman, Niranjana Srinivasan, Pallavi Prasanna,Nalini Krishnan, Maharajapuram Srinivasan, Subhiksha Raman and the listgoes on and on with more than 50 sishyas.

Smt. Lalitha Sivakumar has percolated the great PARAMPARA throughher dedicated and committed teaching and training.

R. Rajalakshmi - Vocal

A recipient of CCRT (Centre for CulturalResources and Training) scholarship, Rajalakshmiholds a bachelors degree in Sanskrit and pursuinga degree course in music. She has won many prizesin competitions held by various sabhas.

Training under guru Smt. Lalitha Sivakumar, shehas performed at various places like Chennai,Neyveli and Varanasi. She has also been amongthe top in the Carnatic music TV show TanishqSwarna Sangeetham.

GURU : Padma Bhushan Sangita KalanidhiSudha Ragunathan

Gifted with a golden voice, Smt. SudhaRagunathan was initially groomed by hermother Smt. Choodamani and later cameunder the tutelage of Vidwan Sri. B.V.Lakshman. With a Central Govt. scholarship,Smt. Sudha got an opportunity to learn fromSangita Kalanidhi Dr. M.L. Vasanthakumari.

Smt. Sudha Ragunathan is a torch bearer ofGNB and MLV bani. She has performedinnumerous concerts in India and abroad. Sheis a recipient of a number of awards and recongnitions like Isai Peroli,Kalaimamani, the prestigious Sangita Kalanidhi and the state honour ofPadma Shri and Padma Bhushan.

Following her guru's tradition, Sudha Raghunathan is passing on thePARAMPARA to her students.

Deepika V. - Vocal

From a very tender age, Deepika showed immensetalent in Carnatic music. Taking notice of this talent,her mother put her under the tutelage of PadmashriSmt. Sudha Ragunathan at an early age. She has beenlearning from her ever since. An engineering graduate,Deepika is also a degree holder on Sanskrit. She is aB High Grade artiste at All India Radio, Chennai.

Choosing music as career, Deepika is a versatilevocalist who has sung in 6 languages in films and TVserials. She has been awarded titles like Yuva Kala

Bharathi and Isai Chudar. She has had the honour of being invited by theU.S. Department of State to participate in the Fusion Arts ExchangeProgramme ar the Northeastern University in Boston.

Deepika is a notable sishya of Smt. Sudha Ragunathan carrying on themantle of the guru's bani.

GURU : Isai Peroli, Shanmukha Sangeetha ShiromaniSmt. Gayathri Venkataraghavan

As a young Gayathri Ramani, she was under thetutelage of Smt. Rajalakshmi with further trainingunder Smt. Padma Veeraraghavan, a disciple ofSri. Palghat K.V. Narayanaswamy. She had alsolearnt from Smt. Rukmani Ramani, Sri.V.Subramaniam and Smt. Lakshmi Natarajan.

Smt. Gayathri Venkataraghavan had her advancedtraining under Acharya Choodamani Guru Sri.A.Sundaresan. Now she is guided by PadmaBhushan Sangeetha Kala Acharya Sri. P.S.

Narayanaswamy. Gayathri has received many awards and titles includingKalki Krishnamoorthy award, Nada Oli, Shanmukha Sangeetha Shiromani.The best she would ever remember is that she had the honour of anchoringa Doordarshan documentary, Engum Nirai Nada Bhrahmam, a tribute toSmt. M.S.Subbulakshmi whom she adores as Devata.

She is a 'A Top' graded artiste of All India Radio and has been performingin India and abroad regularly.

Carrying on the PARAMPARA, Smt. Gayathri Venkataraghavan teachesmusic to many students.

R. Amrutha Varshini - Vocal

Initially trained under Smt. Srimathi Rajagopalan,a disciple of Sri. Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer andthen from Dr. Manjula Sriram, young AmruthaVarshini is now a disciple of guru Smt. GayathriVenkataraghavan.

Amrutha Varshini has won many prizes incompetitions and has performed in various leadingsabhas in Chennai and other states. She is also arecipient of the award Yuvasri Kala Bharathi from Bharathi Yuva Kendra,Madurai.

GURU : Sangeetha Kala Sarathy,Isai Peroli Dr. S. Sowmya

Growen up in a traditional South Indian family,Smt. Sowmya had her initial tutelage in musicfrom her father Dr. Srinivasan and later cameunder illustrious gurus Dr. S. Ramanathan andSmt. T. Mukta.

At a very young age of 10. Sowmya received a6-year Cultural Talent Scholarship forInstrumental Music (Veena) from the Dept. of Culture, Govt. of India. Shealso has excellent academic credentials with double postgraduation (Master’sin Chemistry as well as Indian Music) and was a top-ranked scholar at theIndian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) and the University of Madras.

Smt. Sowmya has many albums to her credit and has received many awardsand titles. Her performances have won her prizes for outstanding and thebest vocalist award from many sabhas. She is also an accomplished veenaplayer. She has performed across the globe.

Smt. Sowmya passes on the PARAMPARA of classicism to her disciples.

V. Subashri - Vocal

A notable sishya of Dr. S. Sowmya, V. Subashrihas been learning music from a tender age. She isunder the tutelage of guru Sowmya since the ageof 6.

Subashri has won many prizes including Smt.M.S. Subbulakshmi award from Sri Krishna GanaSabha and Times Thyagaraja Award. The list offirst prizes won by her in various categoriesincluding for rendering swaram and niraval,singing compositions of Papanasam Sivan andBharathiar is a long one. She is a student pursuing

Physics in her bachelors course.

Subashri has performed in many prestigious organisations. She follows thestyle of guru meticulously.

N. Jayakrishnan - Vocal

A multi talented young artiste, N. Jayakrishnan hasa way with music, its nuances and creativity. Initiallytrained under Ajay Namboodiri, Jayakrishnan movedto Chennai from Kerala only to pursue Carnaticmusic. Academically brilliant Jayakrishnan ispersuing Ph.D. at IIT Madras.

Coming under the tutelage of Sri MeyveliSanthanagopalan, Jayakrishnan has learnt to play theveena also from the guru. He is an accomplishedartist too and has had his painting exhibitions. A keen disciple of his guru,Jayakrishnan has performed many concerts in major cultural organisationsin Chennai and Kerala.

Madurai Sri. T.N. Seshagopalan had his musicaltraining under his mother Smt. Thiruvenkatavalliand later under RamanathapuramC.S.Sankarasivam, a disciple of Sri.HarikesanallurMuthiah Bhagavathar. He is a musical genius whohad mesmerised many through his alapanas,neravals, Kalpana Prastharas, RTPs,Thirupugazh,Viruthams and everything in music.He is proficient in playing the veena andharmonium and also an exponent in Harikatha.

Blessed with abundant creativity, Sri. Seshagopalanhas participated in Jugalbandis in India and worldwide. He has beenshowered with many awards including the Sangita Kalanidhi and PadmaBhushan.

He continues his PARAMPARA through training disciples. An Amazingand inspiring guru, he is.

Kalyanapuram S. Aravind - Vocal

Hailing from a family with rich vedic and musicalheritage, Aravind is a disciple of the legendarySangita Kalanidhi Padma Bhushan MaduraiSri.T.N. Seshagopalan. He is a recipient of variousawards including Yuva Puraskar fromShanmukhananda Sabha, Bharat RatnaDr. M.S.Subbalakshmi Fellowship, Best Singeraward from PSBB school. Aravind has beenperforming in sabhas in chennai and other cities.

He has also been ably guided by Shri.S.Kasturi Rangan, the senior-mostdisciple of Aravind's guru, Sri.TNS.

Bestowed with a clear voice, Aravind carries on the baani of the TNS schooland its impeccable paatantharam.

The much sought after guru Smt. SugunaVaradachari had her initial training under Sri.P. K. Rajagopal Iyer, a disciple of TigerVaradachariar and had the privilege of havingadvanced training under Sri. MusiriSubramania Iyer with a scholarship. Later shealso trained under Calcutta Sri. K. S.Krishnamurthy. Known for extensiverepertoire of songs, Smt. Suguna Varadachariis popular among her sishyas.

With priority over music to number of concerts, Smt. Suguna always insistedon quality to her students. She has been the pride of many upcomingVidhushis and Vidwans. She continues to inspire the younger generationwith the PARAMPARA she had acquired through her great gurus.

S. Sahana - Vocal

Hailing from the famed SembanarkoilNagaswara family, music is like fish takingto water for Sahana. She had her initialtraining under Ramnad P.M. Lakshmana Iyerand her grandfather nagaswaram vidwan Sri.S. R. D. Vaidyanathan.

Continuing her advanced training underguru Smt. Suguna Varadachari, Sahana isalso pursuing B.A. in Music. She hasparticipated and won many prizes incompetitions conducted by various sabhasand by Govt. of Tamil Nadu.

Sahana is also a recipient of the awards YuvaKala Bharathi, Kalai Ilamani among others.

GURU : Isai Peroli Smt. Bombay Jayashri Ramnath

Gifted with a mellifluous voice, Smt.Bombay Jayashri's music touches thelistener's heart. Groomed by thelegend Sri. Lalgudi G. Jayaraman andSmt.T.R. Balamani, Bombay Jayashricarries on the rich Lalgudi traditionin her own distinct style. Performedworldwide, Jayashri was the firstCarnatic classical performer in theOpera House in Durban and atRussian Opera House, Helsinki. Her training in Hindustani Classical systemhas further helped her in this musical odyssey.

Bombay Jayashri's intuitive and melodic approach lend a spiritual tone toher music.She also teaches the underprivileged and autistic children. Herassociation with Ability Foundation and her own Hitham Trust beartestimony to her service for cause. She continues the PARAMPARA throughtraining her students in music and values of life.

Chaitrra Sairam - Vocal

A disciple of Smt. Bombay Jayashri for the past14 years, Chaitrra is an 'A' grade artist from theAll India Radio and Doordarshan. She has beenperforming at various prestigious sabhas in Indiaand abroad.Chaitrra is a recipient of the Yuva Kala Bharathiaward from the Bharat Kalachar, Chennai. Shehas completed her M.Sc in Psychotherapy andCounseling. She shares music with aspiringstudents at The Music Umbrella, a music school,initiative by Guru Smt. Bombay Jayashri. She has

conducted several workshops for students and corporates.She has travelledalong with her guru to Malaysia and Europe and has also been part ofseveral projects and musical albums. Chaitrra has a few albums released toher credit and has won critical acclaim all over.
