Day 1: Depart U.S. for Lisbon, Portugal
Day 2: Arrive Lisbon We arrive in thePortuguese capital early this afternoon. Theremainder of the day is at leisure before dinner atour hotel. D
Day 3: Lisbon/Queluz This morning’s city tourincludes the Jeronimos Monastery, a masterpieceof Manueline architecture; Belem Tower; and theMonument to the Discoveries commemoratingPortugal’s storied explorers. Then we visit theNational Palace of Queluz, the former residenceof Portuguese royalty now used for state occasions.After returning to Lisbon, the remainder of the dayis at leisure to explore as we wish, perhaps to visit alocal club to hear Portuguese Fado music. Day 4: Lisbon/Evora Leaving Lisbon thismorning, we travel through the rolling hills of theagricultural Alentejo district, with its bountifulfields of wheat, fra grant vineyards, and stands ofolive and cork trees. After stopping for lunch inthe fortified hilltop town of Monsaraz (pop. 150),late afternoon we arrive in Evora, capital of theAlen tejo and site of our pousada, consideredPortugal’s finest. B,L,D
Day 5: Evora Our morning walking tour ofEvora introduces us to the many charms of thisarchitectural gem – a university town, prosperousregional capital, and UNESCO World Heritagesite thanks to the many relics of its Roman andMoorish heritage. Day 7: Carmona/Seville This morning we visit splendid Seville, Moorish capital of Spain’sAndalusia region and city of beauty and romance.This is the place that inspired Carmen and DonGiovanni; where fragrant orange trees and flower-bedecked balconies delight the senses; and homeof the re nowned Catédral, the world’s largestGothic building. After a tour that includes thepalace and the Arab quarter, the afternoon isfree to explore in dependently. We return toCarmona late afternoon and dine at our paradorthis evening. B,D
Day 8: Carmona/Cordoba Today’s visit to thiscultural gem promises to be special indeed. Firstthe capital of Roman Spain, then of MoorishSpain, Cordoba features some of the country’smost impor tant monuments, including the OldQuarter built around the magnificent Mezquitamosque. It was here that the Moors ruled fromthe 8th to the 11th centuries and fostered a cultureof learning and relig ious harmony known theworld over. Cordoba also is home to Andalusia’sonly synagogue to survive the expulsion of Spain’sJews in the 15th century. After touring these andother highlights we have free time to explore onour own. Late this afternoon we return to ourparador, where we dine tonight. B,D
Day 9: Carmona/Ronda Leaving Carmona thismorning we travel south to tiny Ronda, one ofSpain’s oldest and most aristocratic towns. It’s sethigh in the mountains with whitewashed housesclinging improb ably to the edge of El Tajo Gorge– 500 feet deep and 300 feet wide. After a briefwalking tour, our after noon is at leisure. B,D
Day 10: Ronda Today is at leisure to enjoy thischarming and historic town on our own. Tonightwe dine on regional specialties at our parador,Ronda’s original town hall. B,D
Day 11: Ronda/Granada/Ubeda Continungour journey, we travel today to Granada, the for-mer stronghold of Moorish Spain set in thefoothills of the snowcapped Sierra Nevada. Thecity’s undisputed highlight is the Alhambra, theextraordinary palace of Spain’s last Moorish rulers.

Sprawled across a hilltop above the Darro River,the Alhambra commands breathtak ing views ofthe city below, as we see on our afternoon tour ofthis splendid citadel. We also visit the Granadian-style Generalife, the palace’s acclaimed gardens.Late afternoon we travel north to Ubeda and ournext parador, a former palace dating to the 16thcentury and where we dine tonight. Day 12: Ubeda/Toledo/Madrid A highlight is in store today as we visit Toledo, capital ofmedieval Spain. Declared a Spanish NationalLandmark, the city is little changed visually fromits 16th-century days as a subject for the artist ElGreco. Toledo boasts an incomparable hilltop setting overlooking the Castillian plains and surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River.After lunch on our own we see Toledo’s mostimportant sights on our guided tour, including the massive Gothic Cathedral begun in 1226 and not finished until 1493. Then we continue on to Madrid, arriving late afternoon. B
Day 13: Madrid Our morning tour of thismonu mental and dignified capital city includesvast Plaza Mayor, in the heart of Old Madrid; theMoorish medieval district; and opulent 18th-cen-tury Palacio Real (Royal Palace), with its 2,800rooms. Our tour ends at the Prado, one of theworld’s greatest museums, where we’re free toexplore on our own. Displaying treasures bySpanish masters Goya, El Greco, and Velazquez,the Prado also houses an impor tant collection ofFlemish and Italian master pieces. The remainderof the day is free for independ ent exploration inthis cosmopolitan city. B

H. Rosi Song specializes inthe literature, intellectualhistory, and culture of con-temporary Spain. She is theco-editor of a collection ofcritical essays entitledTraces of Contamination:Unearthing the FrancoistLegacy in ContemporarySpanish Discourse (Bucknell
UP, 2004). She has also co-edited a special issueand a cluster for the Journal of Spanish CulturalStudies on the aesthetics of camp and theArizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies on the'movida'. Her articles have appeared in RomanceNotes, Hispamérica, Revista Iberoamericana,Hispania, Hispanic Journal and recent collectionson contemporary Spain such as Casa encantada:lugares de memoria en la España constitucional(1975-2004) (Vervuert, 2005) and BorderInterrogations: Crossing and Questioning SpanishFrontiers from the Middle Ages to the Present(Berghahn Books, 2008). She teaches courseson modern and contemporary Spanish narrativeand culture, detective fiction, and film.
