Udavum Karangal Centre for Humane Services Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained Anjali & Jennifer Ms. ANJALI, aged about 14 years is a psychiatric patient. She was rescued from the streets of Retteri, Chennai by our Volunteers on 10.10.1995. Since she appeared to be mentally retarded, she was not in a position to furnish any details about herself or her background. She was admitted in our facility and was on medication as prescribed by our Psychiatrist. One night, she escaped from the Home uninformed in Jan 1996. It was on 2 nd December 1996 that a person by name Mr. Gurumurthy, a well wisher of Udavum Karangal of Share and Care Welfare Society, informed over phone that a lady with a new born baby was lying on the street and there was none to help them with food or medicines. Mr. Vidyaakar, immediately rushed to the spot and took them to the Home at Thiruverkadu for further care and management. The kid was named as “Jennifer”. Jennifer was admitted in a school for Special children at Thiruverkadu maintained by Udavum Karangal, where she studied upto 7 th Std. As she grew, her interest was on care giving and helping the mentally ill patients including her mother. At the age of 22, she was married to Mr. Manikandan and gave birth to a boy baby named “Akilan”. On 22 nd August 2021, Jennifer her husband and the kid, Akilan visited Udavum Karangal’s Home Shanthivanam at Thiruverkadu. Anjali was thrilled and excited and took Akilan into her hands. She caressed, kissed and was not willing to part with the baby. But for Mr. Vidyaakar’s timely intervention in rescuing the mother (Anjali) and the baby in 1996, we could not have seen the three generations living so happily. Mr. Vidyaakar has now promised for a good education for her son Akilan in Udavum Karangal’s School.
