Victoria Andalucci and her 16-year-old son, Tyler, are en-
joying a fun-filled vacation at Club Paradise in Mar-
tinique. A typical teenager, Tyler spends his days on the
beach with the other teens while his mother attends a
conference and explores Martinique. Her quest for ad-
venture is definitely quenched, as she ventures out of the
resort and finds herself alone and in a perilous fight for
her life! Will she survive the treacherous predicament

Victoria et son fils, Tyler, étaient chez2 son ortho-dontiste, le docteur Philip Michaels. Victoria était trèsheureuse, mais pas Tyler. Il n’était pas heureux parcequ’il ne voulait pas aller chez l’orthodontiste. Et yaller avec sa mère, il n'aimait pas du tout ça. C’étaitévident que sa mère était attirée3 par l’orthodontisteet, pour lui, cette situation n’était pas acceptable.Tyler était très très embarrassé !

Sa mère aimait aller chez le docteur Michaels.Elle aimait beaucoup y aller ! Elle aimait ça parceque le docteur Michaels était une bonne personne;il était très beau et il était célibataire4 !
Les parents de Tyler ont divorcé il y trois ans5
quand Tyler avait seulement treize ans. Le divorce l’abeaucoup affecté. Tyler se sentait très seul parce queson père ne lui parlait plus. Il n’avait pas un pèreavec qui il pouvait parler de la politique, des sportsou des voitures.
Tyler a regardé sa mère. Elle regardait une photodu docteur Michaels. Le docteur était avec un petitgarçon. Sa mère a demandé à Tyler :
– Est-ce que le docteur a des enfants ? C’estson fils qui est sur la photo ?
– Je ne sais pas, Maman. – Le docteur est très beau !– Maman ! C’est embarrassant !
Juste à ce moment, le docteur Michaels est entré.Tyler était très embarrassé et sa mère aussi.
– C’est une bonne photo. C’est votre fils ? –adit Victoria au Dr Michaels.

– Non, ce n’est pas mon fils. C’est le filsd’une amie.
La mère de Tyler voulait lui demander pourquoiil n’avait pas d’enfants et pourquoi il était célibataire.Mais elle ne lui a pas parlé; elle a seulement pensé:«Le fils d’une amie ?... C’est une amie ou c’est unecopine ? Pourquoi est-ce qu’il est célibataire ? Est-cequ’il est aussi divorcé ?...». Tyler était embarrassé etil a pensé: «Ne pose plus de questions, Maman !».Après un silence, finalement, le docteur Michaels adit à Tyler :
– Ça va, Tyler ? Est-ce tu portes toujours ta plaque de contention6 ?
– Oui, je la porte toujours.– C’est bien.

sait des questions au sujet de ses cours. Il lui posaitdes questions au sujet des voitures et des copinesaussi. Ils se parlaient comme père et fils. La mère deTyler était heureuse. Elle aimait que le docteur parleavec Tyler.
– Tyler, quelle est ton cours préféré ?– Je ne sais pas.– Tu n’as pas de cours préféré ?
Tyler a réfléchi pendant un moment et il lui a ré-pondu:
– Eh bien...j’aime le cours de français. – Quel âge as-tu ?– Seize ans.– Seize ans ! Alors...Tu as une copine ?– Non, je n’ai pas de copine.
Les deux se sont parlé pendant quelques minuteset puis, le docteur a regardé la mère de Tyler.
– Et vous, Victoria, ça va ?– Très bien, Dr Michaels.– 'Docteur' est très formel. On peut se tu-
toyer7. Tu peux m’appeler Phil.– D’accord, Phil, elle lui a répondu d’une
manière romantique.

Le cœur8 de Victoria palpitait et c’était évidentqu’elle était attirée par le docteur. Tyler était très em-barrassé et il pensait : « Ma mère a quarante ans ! Elleest attirée par le docteur Michaels et c’est ridicule !Que c’est embarrassant !».
L’orthodontiste a examiné les dents de Victoriapendant quelques minutes et puis il lui a dit :
– Je vais enlever ton appareil dentaire9. – Vraiment ?!– Oui, vraiment –lui a répondu le Dr Mi-
chaels.– Quand est-ce que tu vas l’enlever ?– Hhhmmm... Je vais enlever ton appareil

– C’est parfait ! –lui a répondu Victoria avecémotion–. J’ai une conférence spéciale enMartinique dans six semaines et je ne vou-drais pas avoir l’appareil dentaire pendantla conférence.
– Quelle sorte de conférence ?C’était évident que Victoria était très enthou-
siaste au sujet de la conférence. Avec enthousiasme,elle a répondu :
– C’est une conférence pour les professeursde langues10.
– Tu es professeur ?– Oui. Je suis professeur d’hébreu et d’arabe.
Je suis aussi prof de français.– Incroyable ! Tu parles quatre langues ?!
Que tu es intelligente! J’ai étudié l’espa-gnol pendant trois ans mais je suis stupide.Je ne parle pas un mot d’espagnol.
L’orthodontiste a ri et Victoria a ri aussi. Le DrMichaels et Victoria se sont parlé et ils ont ri pendantdix minutes. Tyler était embarrassé et il pensait : « Sicette conversation absurde continue, je vais vomir!».Pour Tyler, cette conversation était ridicule !

– Ça y est. Alors on va enlever ton appareildentaire le 23 juin. Mais...est-ce que tu vasporter ta plaque de contention ?
– Oui ! Je suis une bonne patiente. Je vaisporter cette plaque vingt-quatre heures survingt-quatre.
Le Dr Michaels a ri encore une fois, puis il lui adit d'une manière romantique:
– Victoria, tu es une patiente parfaite, alorstu as l’option d'avoir un symbole spécialsur ta plaque de contention.
– Un symbole ?– Oui, un symbole...comme une croix11, un
cœur ou des lettres...Victoria a réfléchi pendant une minute et finale-
ment, elle a répondu:– Je veux un symbole...je veux un cœur... je
veux un cœur avec les lettres : A-M-O-U-R. L’orthodontiste a regardé Victoria et elle a ri
comme une fille de seize ans. Le Dr Michaels a riaussi. Tyler était très très embarrassé ! Et il a crié :«C’est complètement ridicule !»

Chapitre 2Des moments magiques
Le 23 juin, Victoria est retournée chez l’ortho-dontiste. Elle s’est assise et elle a attendu cinq mi-nutes. Ensuite une femme est entrée et elle a dit :« Victoria Andalucci». Très heureuse, Victoria a suivila femme.
– Asseyez-vous, Victoria, –a dit la femme.Victoria s’est assise et la femme lui a demandé :
– Vous êtes prête ?– Oui, –lui a répondu Victoria.

Victoria était heureuse, mais elle était triste aussi.Elle a pensé: « J’aime bien rendre visite au Dr Mi-chaels. Maintenant, je ne vais plus le voir. Que c’esttriste !» La femme a enlevé l’appareil dentaire pen-dant vingt minutes. Ensuite, elle s’est exclamée :
– Voilà ! C'est fini ! Est-ce que vous voulezvoir votre nouveau sourire ?
Victoria s’est regardée dans le miroir et elle étaittrès heureuse. Elle a regardé ses dents et elle a souri.Victoria aimait son nouveau sourire et à ce momentmagique, elle se sentait belle. Le Dr Michaels l’a ob-servée et il lui a dit :
– Victoria, tu as l’air d’un top model ! Quel beau sourire !
Victoria a souri et a ressenti un autre momentmagique. Elle a regardé l’orthodontiste et elle lui arépondu:
– Merci, Phil. Merci beaucoup.Le Dr Michaels a regardé Victoria et il a souri.
Ensuite il lui a dit :– Reviens demain à onze heures pour pren-
dre ta plaque de contention. Il est impor-tant que tu commences à la porter tout desuite.

– D’accord, doc... euh...Phil. C’est très bien.Le lendemain matin, Victoria est retournée chez
l’orthodontiste. Elle était triste parce que le docteurMichaels n’était pas là. Elle a pris sa plaque decontention et l’a examinée. Elle était rouge avec uncœur rose. Victoria a regardé les lettres sur le cœuret elle a ri. Elle a ri des lettres : A-M-O-U-B. Elle vou-lait les lettres A-M-O-U-R, mais elle n’a rien dit ausujet de l’erreur avec les lettres. Elle a pris sa plaqueet elle est partie.
Plus tard, elle est allée au centre commercialparce qu’elle voulait acheter un bikini pour le voyageen Martinique. Elle est entrée dans le JT-Máximo etelle est entrée dans une salle d’essayage1 avec un bi-kini rouge. Elle s’est regardée dans le miroir avec son

bikini. Elle était heureuse. Elle s’est sérieusement re-gardée et a pensé à la remarque de l’orthodontiste,«Tu as l’air d’un top model » et à ce moment, elles’est vraiment sentie comme un model. Victoria estsortie du magasin avec son nouveau bikini et elle estrentrée chez elle. En arrivant, elle a crié à Tyler :
– Tyler! Où es-tu ?Tyler était dans sa chambre où il parlait avec ses
amis sur Facebook. Sa mère est entrée et elle lui adit :
– Regarde mon nouveau bikini. Tu aimes ?– Maman, un bikini ?! Tu as quarante ans !
Les bikinis sont pour les filles, pas pour lesmères !
Sa mère a ri et elle est partie. Tyler a écrit sur Fa-cebook : « Quelle est la définition d’em- barrassé?...Etre en vacances avec ta mère qui porte un bikini ».Tyler ne voulait pas aller en Martinique. Il préféraitêtre avec ses amis, pas avec sa mère. Surtout pasavec sa mère dans un bikini!
Pendant les jours suivants, Victoria s’est préparéepour le voyage en Martinique. Dans la matinée du27, elle a couru dans toute la maison comme unefolle, en ramassant toutes les choses nécessaires pour
le voyage : sa plaque de contention, les passeports,ses vêtements, son nouveau bikini et les documentspour la conférence. Finalement, elle était prête, maisTyler, lui, ne l’était pas. Il a rassemblé ses vêtementset a crié à sa mère:
– Maman, va chercher une valise2 pour moi, s’il te plaît !
Victoria a trouvé une valise pour son fils et fina-lement, Tyler était prêt. Puis, une amie de Victoria estarrivée chez eux et ils sont partis avec elle pour l’aé-roport. Quelques minutes plus tard, à bord d'un 777.Victoria a regardé son fils et lui a dit :
– Enfin, on est en route pour la Martinique !Sans enthousiasme, Tyler lui a répondu :
– Oui, maman. On va en Martinique.Quatre heures plus tard, ils sont arrivés en Mar-
tinique. Ils sont entrés dans l’aéroport et ont retrouvéleurs valises. La mère de Tyler s’est assise et a appeléTyler :
– Tyler, attends.– Maman, qu’est-ce que tu fais? –lui a ré-
pondu Tyler avec impatience.

– Le document de la conférence disait : « Ilest important de porter la visière de TPRSparce qu’avec lavisière, le chauffeur del’hôtel peut identifier les personnes dugroupe. Le chauffeur va vous attendre de-vant l’aéroport ».
La mère de Tyler a sorti deux visières de sa va-lise. Tyler les a regardées et a crié :
– Maman, je ne veux pas porter la visière.S’il te plaît !
– Sans visière le chauffeur ne peut pas nousidentifier.
Victoria a mis la visière, mais pas Tyler. Il l’avaitdans la main. Les deux sont allés devant l’aéroportet ils sont immédiatement entrés dans...du chaos! Ily avait beaucoup de Martiniquais qui leur criaient :« Madame, madame ! » «Taxi, lady ?» « Taxi, taxi ! »« Vous allez dans le quartier des hôtels ? »
Victoria a écouté les cris et s'est sentie nerveusemais pas Tyler. Tyler les a écoutés et il a ri. Avec unsourire, il leur a répondu :
– Non, merci. Il y avait beaucoup de désordre et Victoria se
sentait agitée. Finalement, une femme a couru vers

eux et leur a demandé : – Vous êtes avec le groupe de TPRS ?– Oui.– Attendez ici. Le chauffeur va arriver dans
cinq minutes.Victoria et Tyler ont attendu pendant quinze mi-
nutes et finalement le chauffeur est arrivé. Il a prisleurs valises et leur a demandé :
– Vous êtes prêts ? Ils ont répondu :
– Oui !Ils sont arrivés bientôt à l’hôtel Club Paradis. Vic-
toria a regardé l’océan et a regardé son fils. Tyleravait un sourire énorme. Victoria a souri et a pensé :« C’est vraiment un paradis. C’est un autre momentmagique ».
