Forgiveness, Faith & Duty (17:1-10)Forgiveness, Faith & Duty (17:1-10)“Make our faith greater.” (v5) (SPM Question) Outcome of the conversation of Jesus to the

disciples. Offences: mean “stumbling blocks.” Lit. The trigger of a trap or a snare. It designates something that will cause another to sin. Note the strong warning against being the cause of the apostasy of others, particularly those less mature in years of experience.

This leads to forgive regardless the number of times he comes to us in repentance (V4).

ForgivenessForgiveness Pastor Frank Wilson of New Dawn Christian

Village in Los Angeles, CA, informed his flock that “unforgiveness is the poison you take hoping someone else will die.”

Parable of the servant (17:1-10)Parable of the servant (17:1-10)Lesson:

Doing what Jesus called them to do, required not so much faith but obedience and faithfulness. They were to see themselves as servants of God whose responsibility was to do all that God commands them to do. When they have done all that, they were not to expect thanks but were to recognise that they were just ordinary servants doing their duty. (A105Q4)

Own testimony – Lordship of Christ

Jesus Heals Ten Men (17:11-19)Jesus Heals Ten Men (17:11-19) Ingratitude did not deny Christ’s mercy to the nine

but did deprive them of fellowship with Him. “Your faith made you well…” happens on 3 other

occasions: (A107S4)

1. Prostitute (7:50)

2. Woman with blood discharge (8:48)

3. Blind beggar (18:42)

Refers to salvation (soul) rather than health (body). Full restoration means a saved soul and as well as a sound body.

Lepers compelled by Law to keep their distance.

On the way they were made clean (17:14)On the way they were made clean (17:14)

Interesting thoughts:

1. Progressive healing. Not instant all the time.

2. “Go…let the priests…” affirmation of the Law as the priests were the physicians of that culture.

3. Obedience to Jesus’ command – no doubting.

4. Only one returned to express gratitude. When healing comes, express thanks with praise and worship.

The coming of the Kingdom (17:20-37)The coming of the Kingdom (17:20-37)

Kingdom of God is spiritual and internal rather than physical and external and therefore its coming could not be observed. (v20-21)

“Within you” (or “in your midst”) could not be interpreted that the Kingdom was in the Pharisees because they did not believe in Jesus’ claims about who He was. In fact, the Kingdom was already among them, present in the person and ministry of Jesus and they could not recognise it. (pg78m)

The coming of the Kingdom (17:20-37)The coming of the Kingdom (17:20-37) In times of weariness believers will often long for that day

of victory. (v22)

Until the Lord’s returns, Christians are to live by faith and avoid those who tamper with dates and signs. (v23)

The Lord’s Coming will be as sudden and as visible as lightning. (v24)

Believers must live in constant expectancy and readiness for Christ’s return, in contrast to the careless indifference of unbelievers who are absorbed in routine pursuits of life as though they were permanent. (v26-30)

A loose attachment to things of Earth allows for readiness to leave. The fate of Lot’s wife is a warning against being tied to worldly possessions. (v31,32)

The coming of the Kingdom (17:20-37)The coming of the Kingdom (17:20-37) Jesus explains the paradox of discipleship. To lose

life is to find it; to die is to live. To deny oneself is not to assume some false, external asceticism, but to put the interest of the kingdom first and foremost in one’s life. To take up the cross does not mean to endure some irritating burden, but to renounce self-centred ambitions. Such sacrifice results in eternal life and the fullest experience of kingdom life now. (v33)

There will be a decisive separation at the Lord’s return. The time and manner of fulfilment is not indicated. (v34-36)

This proverb (of circling vultures) would indicate the presence of a dead body, so His presence would be clearly evident when He comes again.

ForgivenessForgiveness

Now that I’ve shared what forgiveness is not, let me give you the most accurate picture I have discovered of what forgiveness is. It comes from The Doctrine of Prayer, by T.W. Hunt (an amazing book by the way).

Think of your situation as a court case. You are the plaintiff and the prosecuting attorney. The person who wronged you is the defendant. You have done an phenomenal job of compiling your briefs. For your day in court, you come “flied out,” in your Black Label Armani,  toting a Prada

briefcase, kicks courtesy of Guiseppe Zonotti, and so much legal documentation in tow that it must be brought in on not one - but three dollies. You are fierce and everybody, including you knows it.  The judge enters, calls court into session, and instructs you to begin opening arguments.

You take a deep breath, but to everyone’s utter amazement, you wheel all of your files, every scrap of evidence you’ve amassed, your entire brief, plop it on the judge’s bench, and sashay your well-dressed behind right out of the courtroom.

That is forgiveness. You take your entire case (and the Lord knows you do have one) against your offender and leave it before the Judge to rule on, trusting that because he knows ALL, is perfectly just, merciful, and benevolent, he will rule in the matter perfectly. You And because you have

decided on the front end that you will accept whatever ruling is handed down, you are free to live your life.

My Brother, My Sister, if you are struggling with unforgiveness, I beg you, please decide today, this instant, to take all of your files, evidence, or prepared speeches, and leave them at the Jugde’s bench. He cannot act contrary to his own nature. So he will do right by you.  As often as you find yourself retrieving a file, attempting to sneak a peek inside, in your mind, see yourself placing it back atop the Judge’s bench. As you turn to exit the courtroom - again, catch him out of the corner of your eye, nodding his approval with a huge grin on his face, proud of your determination to

trust him.

Pray with me:Father God, I am weighed down my the unforgiveness I have been carrying in my heart toward (name the person or persons here) over what happened between us. I am hurt and I feel betrayed. I want to be free though. I want there to be nothing standing between you and me, Lord.

I choose to see you as the Righteous Judge. You know all the details of this case, on both sides. You see all of it from beginning to end with perfect clarity. I know you love me and work in all things for my good. I place my trust in you.

I confess that I have made room for unforgiveness in my heart. Forgive me for(name all other tributary sins that have sprung from your unforgivness i.e. self-righteousness, revenge, gossip, malice, slander, etc). I want nothing to stand between us.

I extend blanket-forgiveness to anyone who has offended me especially (name person or persons here). I choose to leave all of my files on your bench.

I cannot change my own heart. I need you, Lord, to do it for me. Please help me to walk in my new posture of forgiveness and to stand ready to forgive any and every person who might offend me today and everyday.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
