The story answers a question…

There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test Jesus and said, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

Jesus said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?

He said in reply, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbour as yourself.”

Jesus replied to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.”

“Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbour to the beaten up man?”

The scholar answered, “the one who treated him with mercy.”

Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

A parable is a story that has a moral meaning.

The Jews considered the Samaritans outcasts; they treated them as enemies and would have nothing to do with them. So when Jesus said the Good Samaritan was the one showing love and being the good neighbour, he meant we should help those in need regardless of race or colour.

This means that you should treat people

the way you want to be treated,

regardless of race, colour, gender or

anything else.

How can we put this parable into practice?

Jesus taught people the golden rule,

which is “you should love

your neighbour as

yourself.”
