Gilad Shalit watching the WorldCup? Hamas claims that kidnappedIDF Corporal Gilad Shalit (four yearsheld hostage on Friday) is watchingthe World Cup Soccer matches fromhis prison in Gaza. Of course, theywon’t let the Red Cross or anyoneelse in to verify it. Shalit has been following the dailymatches on the pro-Hamas al-Aqsasatellite channel, al-Resallah newsreported.… The report said watching the soccermatches helps Shalit forget hisdespair “after the Israeli governmentdecided to suspend indirect talks tofinalize the swap deal with Hamas.” The report, which does not quote anysources within Hamas or amongShalit’s captors and reads likepropaganda, claims that the abductedsoldier is t i red of the Israel ipoliticians’ lies and their false vowsto secure his release, and therefore heis focusing on the World Cup gamesbecause he understands that theIsraeli public is more focused onsoccer than on him. Egypt, and later Germany, had triedto finalize a prisoner exchange dealbetween Hamas and Israel. However,the efforts collapsed after Hamasinsisted that Israel free 1,000Palestinian prisoners, including thosewho were directly involved in terrorattacks against Israelis. The report said Shalit, who holdsFrench nationality, “was very sadwhen France was defeated by Mexicoduring the World Cup matches heldin South Africa.” But Hamas has turned down yetanother request to let the Red Crossvisit Shalit. They claim that they areafraid that if the Red Cross is allowedto visit Shalit, Israel will conduct arescue operation. In an interview with Hamasnewspaper, Falastin, four years afterScha l i t was cap tured , Hamaslawmaker Yichia Musa said that theRed Cross had not taken intoconsideration the reality and situation

on the ground as well as the politicaland military issues involved. That’s funny. I don’t recall any suchconsiderations being part of theGeneva Convention. Why doesn’t theRed Cross or the ‘internationalcommunity’ call Hamas on that? Ofcourse – Shalit is a Jew and thehypocrites at the Red Cross (whobarred Israel’s Magen David Adomfor nearly 60 years and made itchange its logo as a condition foradmission) and in the ‘internationalcommunity’ treat Jews differentlythan everyone else. Musa explained that Hamas’sconcern was based on the security ofthe location in which the soldier wasbeing held. This damagesour efforts to end the suffering ofPalest inian pr isoners ,” Hamaslawmaker concluded. Funny – I don’t recall seeing that inthe Geneva Convention either. By the way, it’s not that theInternational Red Cross has not triedto visit Shalit. The International Committee of theRed Cross said it has approachedHamas a number of times to allow itsrepresentatives to visit the kidnapped

soldier in Gaza, only to be deniedtime after time.“One of our main achievements isthat we have been able to visit nearlyeveryone detained in connection tothis conflict, with the exception ofGilad Shalit,” Pierre Dorbes, deputyhead of the International Committeeof the Red Cross in Israel and theOccupied Territories, told Haaretz onTuesday. Get Good Media Coverage ByExcluding Bad Media Coverage Say that two movies will be comingout next week. One of those movieshas studio which bans all critics whohave spoken unfavorably about itfrom seeing it. The other moviewelcomes all reviewers. When thefinal numbers are tallied, whichmovie do you think will have the bestreviews? The one that didn’t screenthe movie for any critics who werenot favorably disposed toward it. Surethe other movie might claim that itsfavorable reviews were honest. Andthat and a dime will buy you a cup ofcoffee. Now say that these two studios keepdoing this for 10 years, and thatthey’re the only game in town.Eventually just to be able to do theirjobs, critics will almost alwayspositively review movies from thestudio that bars critics, and almostalways negatively review the moviesfrom the other studio to stay on thegood side of the first studio. That isbecause selecting for optimal resultswill produce them. Free societies “screen” for all critics.Totali tarian ones only play tosupportive audiences. That is whythey get the better publicity than freesocieties. The mainstream media will beoutraged, you say. There will be evenmore negative coverage. As if thereisn’t heaps of it now. And what willthe negative media coverage be of?

Occasionally itgoes after terrorists and kills some ofthem. An internat ional outcryimmediately results. This paradox isexplained by a well known defectcommonly present in children andmoral idiots. This moral defect judgesconsistently evil behavior morefavorably, than inconsistently goodbehavior . Another “OppressedMansion” in Ramallah In other words, someone who stealsall the time is viewed more favorablythan a seemingly solid citizen whogets caught shoplifting. Don’t believeme? Count how many ballads havebeen written about highwaymen,bank robbers and terrorists. Theanswer is a whole lot. This defect does not judge themoral i ty of behavior , but i t sconsis tency. Someone who isconsistently bad is seen as good,because he sticks to his principles.Which are bad. Clearly proving thathe’s good. Because if he weren’tgood, why would he be bad all thetime? It must be because he believesthat his behavior is really good. So allwe have to do is understand his pointof view to see why he acts this way. On the other hand someone who isinconsistent is clearly a hypocrite.Otherwise why is his behaviorinconsistent? Clearly he knows he’sdoing wrong and occasionally tries torestrain himself, but still keepsengaging in wrongdoing. Whichmeans he has no principles, and hisbehavior is therefore unjustifiable.

Applied to the Israeli-MuslimTerrorist conflict, this means thatIsrael i s bad because i t onlyinconsistently kills terrorists. On theother hand the terrorists consistentlykill Israelis, which must mean thatthey’re good. By only ki l l ingterrorists sometimes, Israel showsthat it doesn’t believe that killingthem is ever right. By constantlytrying to kill Israelis, the terroristsdemonstrate a consistent value systemthat shows they always believe theare doing the right thing. This seems like madness onlybecause you aren’t a cul turalrelativist. Which is to say that youbelieve some things are right andother things are wrong irregardless ofwho believes them or does them. Butif you were a moral idiot, or a culturalrelativist (but I repeat myself), youwould understand that subjectivelabels such as right or wrong don’tmatter. What matters is that peoplebehave in a way consistent with theircultural imperatives and globalcontext. Which generally meanskilling people or feeling bad becausetheir ancestors killed all those people,depending on their level of industrialdevelopment, infrastructure andaverage family income. Back when Israel was much moreconsistent about killing enemyinsurgents and terrorists, there wasalso a general consensus in its favor.In the 50’s, Ariel Sharon snuck intoEgypt and blew up an entire villagebeing used as an insurgent base.Today a single targeted assassinationof a terrorist results in shrieks ofglobal outrage. The problem here isthe “single” and the “targeted” part.The answer is to kill terrorists likeyou mean it. Not only does consistently doingsomething result in a better globalimage, but it also deadens anyscandal by turning it into static.Assassinate one terrorist in Dubai andthe world is upset. Assassinate tenterrorists a day and the world quicklygets bored a month later after the300th terrorist. There are only somany headlines reading, “Israel StillKilling Terrorists” that anyone willbother to read. And as a major bonus,

killing enough terrorists tends to putan end to that whole terrorism thing. 3. Victims of Our Own Competence The real problem with Israel is notthat it has jets and tanks and nuclearweapons. Most of the Middle Easthas at least two out of three of those.North Korea has all three. Theproblem is that Israel works a littletoo well. What do I mean by that? Israel hasworking traffic lights, electricity,airlines, police forces and stores filledwith things made in the country. Backaround 1950 when countries wereexpected to be able to do things forthemselves, this was considered agood thing. But today the anti-capitalism paradigm is dominant,which means that any level ofcompetence defines you as a villain. When a reporter goes to Tel Aviv orJerusalem, he notices that despite allthe flaws, things somewhat work. Noone generally tries to murder him onthe street. The Jewish residents atleast , aren’t using donkeys astransportation, no one throws rocks athis head, and sewage isn’t flowingthrough the street. But when he goes to Ramallah orGaza, he sees gorgeous villas andclassic Mercedes cars, but he alsosees dust, dirt and yes raw sewage.Things don’t work, or work onlyunpredictably. Abused animals areeverywhere. Militia gangs prowl thestreets. Kids throw rocks. Theelectricity goes on and off. Thedoctors occasionally work at thehospital, when they aren’t heading upthe local wing of Hamas\Fatah orselling drugs. Naturally he thinksthese people must be the victims. The solution is to make Israel appearjust as dysfunctional. While thecountry has i t s problems, bycomparison things do generally work.Now is the time to stop making themwork. During a crisis, major cities inIsrael should repeatedly lose power.The Knesset will have raucousdebates by candlelight. Traffic jamswill be orchestrated and donkeys willreplace taxis. Raw sewage will spillout in the street and doctors will leavetheir jobs and do nothing but conductpress conferences denouncingSweden for making us live this way. Photographers will be invited to takepictures of senior citizens strugglingto manually translate HenningMankell and Iain Banks novels byhand, due to their boycott of Israel.And of children who are receivinginadequate medical care because ofbeing boycotted by British medicaljournals. And of course there will bepeople posing buried in rubble due tothe boycotts of the Canadian Union ofPublic Employees, the PresbyterianChurch and Swedish dock workers. Of course none of this makes any

I consider this song the epitome ofLSW‘s slow, mournful vocal stylebrimming with ornamentation. Youcan also hear the reach and power ofher voice, which seems to float, ifyou will. She clearly flubs the second verse,singing only three out of four linesand does not rhyme the obvious„anider? and „glider?. But sheimprovises a neat ending to theshortened verse and continues. Noticehow she only repeats the last twolines in the final verse, the emotionalhighpoint of the song. This recording was done by LeyblKahn in New York City, 1954. Pleasenote that the Yiddish dialect of thesinger is more accurately reflected inthe transliteration than in the Yiddishtext. A recently released poll shows thegoverning Justice and DevelopmentParty (AKP) of Prime MinisterRecep Tayyip Erdogan slipping outof first place for the first time inyears. Instead, K?l?çdaro?lu’sRepublican People’s Party (CHP) hasinched to a razor-thin lead. If thesenumbers were to hold through nextyear’s election, the AKP’s SunniIslamism will be dealt a heavyrepudiation — as K?l?çdaro?lu is amember of the minority Alevireligious sect. He could also beTurkey’s first Kurdish Prime Minister— depending on whether or not oneconsiders his Zaza ethnicity to be aKurdish subgroup or a separatepeople (either way he’s not an ethnicTurk). Now, this success is partly due to thefact that K?l?çdaro?lu is enjoying a

surge of personal popularity as hetries to modernize the party foundedby Kemal Ataturk. However, it alsoappears that Erdogan’s heavy supportof the Gaza “aid” flotilla has blownup in his face — and that his gradualIslamization of the government mayhave reached a point where the publicis ready to pull the plug. To be fair, K?l?çdaro?lu has joinedErdogan in heavily condemning theIsraeli raid on the flotilla — but hehas a lso b las ted Erdogan forneedlessly provoking Israel. Israel launches new spy satellite towatch Iran On Tuesday night, Israellaunched a new spy satellite, the Ofek9. The Ofek 9 is to be used mainly tokeep an eye on Iran. The Defense Ministry issued astatement saying the satellite waslaunched late Tuesday from thePalmachim air force base on Israel’scoast south of Tel Aviv. An hourlater, after the satellite completed itsfirst circuit, the ministry said it hadachieved its proper orbit, describing itas “a surveillance satellite withadvanced technological capabilities.” Defense officials said Ofek 9 is a spysatellite with a high resolution

camera. It would join two other activespy satellites in the Ofek seriesalready orbiting the earth. But the emphasis is onmomentarily. Additional demandswill be coming, and if they are notaccommodated the situation mayworsen. In Jonathan Alter’s book“The Promise” on Obama’s first yearin the White House, Obama is quotedas saying: “I know how to handleNetanyahu.” And after a year ofdealing with him, Obama probablygives himself a good score on thissubject. Has the government’s policy ofgiving in to Washington’s demandsstrengthened the relationship betweenthe two nations? It certainly does notseem that way at the moment. Andwhat if the Israeli government hadstuck by its positions – would that

have resulted in a crisis? Or bysticking to its principles when vitalIsraeli interests were at stake, wouldthe Israeli leadership have gainedrespect in Washington? The jury isstill out on this question. Bu t i t i s c l ea r t ha t I s r ae l isubservience to American demandsdoes not strengthen Israel’s image inthe eyes of its enemies and in thecapitals of Europe and Asia. The netresult of this Israeli policy in recentyears is negative. Add to that, and notleast important, how Israelis feelabout themselves in light of thissubservience. After having attainedindependence at great sacrifice, andh a v i n g g o t t e n u s e d t o ademocratically elected leadershipdetermining the nation’s course ofaction, it is a blow to our self-esteemto see our leaders obeying orders thatcome from abroad. One cannot escape the feeling thatIsrael is the only country in the worldthat does not know how to say no toObama. Forget about former enemieslike Russia, China and Iran. Look athow many allies say no to Obama.Turkey. HONDURAS (which said nofor months and eventually won).

I am organizing a conference thisweek here in Seattle that will focuson all the issues surrounding the Gazaflotilla attack and siege, as they relateto U.S. policy and its magnificentfailure (so far).
