Potentate’s MessageIllustrious Sir Raymond A. Causton, Potentate

A NOBLE YEAR - A NOBLE CAUSE

Fall has finally arrived and our Clubs and Units are in the process of electingtheir Executives for 2010. I hope that each Club and Unit had a full slate ofNobles seeking election. I would ask that you support your new Executive in

all their and your endeavours.I am still receiving many positive remarks on the circus performances and the

quality of the show. The Circus, under the direction of Assistant Rabban JimMcKinney ran very smoothly - thank you Noble Jim and to all who helped. What agreat Circus Appreciation Night we had at the Temple. The entertainment and mealwere excellent- everyone who attended left with a smile on their face and a fulltummy. The only complaint - Why was it so poorly attended? This evening is athank you, to all who worked so hard in making the Circus a success. Please comeout and support this event in 2010.

The Shrine Varsity Football Game has come and gone and once again it was agreat venue for promoting our Fraternity and Philanthropy. High Priest and ProphetDavid Dunn (Chairman) and all who attended did a wonderful job of promotingRameses Shriners.

As you are all aware, our Canadian soldiers are fighting for our freedom and abetter life for the people of Afghanistan. Rameses Legion of Honour Noble DonaldScandrett is spearheading a very special project that will see several hundredShriner’s Christmas Cakes being sent to our troops in Afghanistan. If you wouldlike to support this very worthwhile project by donating money in the purchasingof Christmas Cakes, please make out your cheque to Rameses Shriners and send itto Recorder Robert McGregor P.P. at Rameses Temple.

Please mark on your calendars Rameses Fall Ceremonial Saturday November 21and the Stated Meeting Friday November 20, 2009. Please attend and support yourCandidate.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Noble Jim Rennie Presidentof the Rameses Hillbilly Shrine Club for being chosen “ International Hillbilly of theYear “.

In closing I would like to thank all Rameses members for the many invitationsto the various functions throughout the year and apologize to those Clubs or Unitsthat we were unable to attend, because of previous commitments.

“Wisdom is the reward for listening over a lifetime.”

BY BOB MCGREGOR, P.P. - Recorder

Recorder’s Message

Nobles, your Elected Divan has been very busy during thesummer and while our Clubs and Units have been, forthe most part, on a siesta during July and August, we

have been burning the midnight oil, so to speak, makingchanges to our method of doing business all of which we willbring to your attention as we move into the new year.

First and probably most important is the fact that Shriners ingeneral have not supported the Petro-Canada Project and yourDivan is at a loss to understand why. This was clearly the bestmoneymaker to come along in many years. There is no cost toany individual and the Shrine stands to make up to 2 cents alitre for every litre of fuel we collectively buy, less the finder’sfee.

The majority of the twelve Canadian Temples did not supportthis all-Canadian project and we, your Divan, are naturallydisappointed, however let me be quick to add that a few of ourUnits and Clubs did jump into this fundraiser full bore andwe are of course very grateful for theirsupport.

Nobles, it’s still not toolate to get on board withthe Petro-Canada Fundraiser. We have until year end tomake it work and if it does,Petro-Canada will extend theprogram for a considerable timeso if you haven’t started buyingyour fuel at a Petro-Canadastation you’re not too late tojump in and show support for thisgreat and easy way to make somemoney for Rameses.

Membership is still a majorproblem for us as Shriners and we allneed to become involved in the solutionto this problem and again it’s so simple. Every Shriner justbrings in one new member each year. Think about this. Everyone of us has 365 days to get just one Mason to join the Shrine.(Yes, I got one for the Spring Ceremonial and yes, I ‘v got onefor the Fall Ceremonial as well.) Nobles, please do your best onthis item. It’s just too important to leave it to someone else andit certainly wouldn’t hurt to bring in some new members to ourMasonic Lodge either.

I just came back from the Fall Session of the New York/Ontario and it was estimated by the senior ImperialOfficer present that if the present rate of decline persists, ourmembership in 2017 (that’s just 8 years from now) will be175,000 members. How then can we possibly keep 22 hospitalsrunning with an annual budget in excess of $800,000.000

At this same meeting there was a very clear hint of a duesand per capita tax increase to all Shrine members in the verynear future.

On a personal note, I don’t have a problem with theincreased costs so long as we have good business headsrunning the show, but if we continue to allow the emotionalmasses to make the decisions, I won’t support any increasebecause in my opinion, it’s throwing good money after bad.

Please allow me to explain as briefly as possible, but first letme state without reservation that I consider the vast majority ofShriners good and honest men who want only the best for ourkids; however we have in the International Shrine over 1,000Nobles who all have a vote on all major changes to our bylaws.

Of this group, Rameses has 5 active representatives. When amajor motion is made, such as closing a hospital etc, all 1,000plus of these Nobles have a vote and that’s where the problemstarts. No Shriner wants to vote to close a hospital and that’swhere emotion takes over from good business sense. I believewe should allow our top executives to make the major decisionsand that we hold them accountable for the faux pas if theymake them, but at least give them a chance to show us what

they can do without dragging1,000 others along withthem who for the most parthave no idea how seriousthe problem really is.

Nobles, can youimagine what wouldhappen if companieslike General Electric,Wal-Mart and Coca-Cola had to includeevery branchmanager and theirassistants incompany decisions.

It wouldn’t work in bigbusiness where billions of dollars are

at stake. The Board would hold the Presidentresponsible for any grievous errors and he would likely be

removed from office and I believe we should give our topexecutive (The Imperial Officers) that option. Again, I say theopinions expressed here are my own and your comments arealways appreciated, both pro and con.

Rameses Fall Stated Meeting is on Friday, November 20th,2009 at 3100 Keele Street starting at 7:30 p.m. The normalbusiness will be dealt with, then we discuss and hopefullyapprove the 2010 budget. We will also give out the 25 and 50year pins also the Samsar Awards so we hope to have a goodturn-out for this very important evening.

On Saturday, November 21st, we will hold our FallCeremonial starting at 8:00 a.m. so please make sure yourCandidate is on time and ready for the busy day ahead.

I look forward to your letters, emails and phone calls. Don’tforget that my job is to help you not put obstacles in your path, but as always it’s much easier to keep you out of trouble thanget you out of trouble.

Thank you Nobles for your support of Rameses and asalways thank you for just being Shriners.

As we enter into the golden days of autumn, we usuallyknow that our busy time is ahead with our Clubs andUnits for a new year and elections, elections, elections

and to continue our commitment to our goals to assist thechildren under our care.

Your newsletters are most welcome and I look forward toreading each and every one.

Some Clubs send their newsletters via email and that surecuts back on the paper. Perhaps your club might look into usingthe internet if you are not already. Saves a lot of postage! Ihave established an additional address should you wish to do

so [email protected] is still our number one priority and with our Fall

Ceremonial soon to be history, we hope you brought in yourmember.

Maybe a saying might be “Did you get yours?”, member thatis!

If we each bring in one new Shriner we would be the largestTemple in Shrinedom. Think what we could do for our hospitalsthen!

We now are one of the top contributors to our ShrinersHospitals for Children, imagine 8,500 Rameses Shriners!

Just remember we must maintain our close relationship withour Masonic Lodges and talk up the Shrine at every opportunityso that we can continue to be the premier Shrine Temple inCanada and among the top 5 in North America.

Look forward to visiting your Club in the near future.

Capability Brown. If you have had the opportunity ofvisiting England and you have viewed many spots wherethere were beautiful gardens, you, no doubt, heard the

name Capability Brown. Capability Brown

was a real person.Brown was born in 1716and he died in 1783. Hisname was Lancelot butit became “Capability”by virtue of his talentfor landscapegardening. Places likeWarwick Castle,Blenheim Palace andmany others (some 170)had their gardensdesigned by Brown andmany of them can beseen today.

He was capable of changing gardens into beautiful parksthat were beautifully landscaped and that is how he became

known as ‘Capability’ Brown. He removed the dreariness ofmany areas and really gave them a new life and beauty.

In a way that is how it is with the Shrine and the lives ofyoung folk who arrive at our Hospitals and Burns Centres. Thequality of life for many of them is not great and the efforts ofShriners internationally is to support the work of researchersand doctors in an effort to improve the quality of those lives.

The Shrine can and does provide a joy and beauty to thelives of our Shrine Kids and that is what it is all about. WhatCapability Brown did for the gardens is very much like what theShrine does for the children who enter our institutions.

By the way, may I suggest you put a ring on your calendarfor Sunday, December 13, 2009 1:30pm for our Carol Service.Plan to be out to share in the singing of the carols of Christmasand share in a time of fellowship.

Always keep in mind our Potentate’s theme for the year: “ANoble Year - A Noble Cause”.

Dave’s Place

As your High Priest and Prophet, I have the pleasure ofchairing both the Varsity Blues Football Classic onOctober 17th, at Varsity Stadium, and the Rameses

Christmas Fantasy Shows starting November 13th. There will be 13 shows in total. These are two important fundraisers and being with you, the

Nobility, at these functions will be a pleasure.I know we can make them a great success. I would like to thank all the Nobles in advance for their hard

work. Our Rameses Stated Meeting and Fall Ceremonial on

November 20-21 is fast approaching. This is a great opportunityto initiate new Members into this wonderful fraternity. OurMembership numbers are dropping and we must work diligentlyto keep them up. All Brother Masons should be made aware ofthe reason for becoming a Shriner, it’s the Children we helpeach and every day.

Nobles, our Illustrious Sir Ray Causton has appointed JimThorton as Membership Director, who is a good man with greatideas and enthusiasm. Please give him your support and input.Keep selling Membership. Remember the Shrine is theplayground of Masonry.

So far 2009 has been a busy year for me but also veryrewarding. There are always new challenges and more to learnwhich is all made worthwhile when we hear about, or see firsthand, the smiles on the Children’s faces at a Shriners Hospital.

Treasurer’s Report

BY JIM D. MCKINNEY - Assistant Rabban

Jim’s Notebook

Nobles, we are now entering the last quarter of 2009. Thisis a very busy and important time of the year. There aremany events to attend and take part in.

Two of the more important events are the Fall Ceremonialand your Club and Unit elections.

With respect to the Fall Ceremonial, I would like to ask everyNoble to try and get at least one new Noble. With your help, Iknow we can start to increase the membership in RamesesShriners. The Club and Unit elections, are your chance to votefor the people who you want to run your Club or Unit.

One of the hidden benefits of being a Shriner is perhaps the

opportunity to take part in operation of your Club or Unit. Theexperience of serving as leader of your Club will be veryrewarding and serve you well in your working career as well.

One of the events I had the pleasure of attending (alongwith our Oriental Guide Noble Terry Lamping) was the VagabondDegree held at the Niagara Shrine Club.

It was a great night and everyone who attended had a lot oflaughs. If you get the chance I would highly recommendbecoming a Vagabond. In addition, both Terry and I enjoyed agreat dinner put on by the fine Nobles of the Niagara ShrineClub for $10.

Just a reminder to please keep using the Petro CanadaFuelling Shriners cards. Nobles, we still have nearly six monthsto make it a success.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at theFall Ceremonial.

Nobles, it is time to prepare for our busy fall season. Wewill soon be conducting elections and installations. Please remember you need your Shrine Centre, Club and

Unit cards with the 2009 date, to vote. Please carry them withyou.

A number of our Clubs and Units are holding elections andinstallations on the same night. This helps with extra drivingand expenses and a much safer way, in our winter weather, forall Nobles and Divan members to travel.

Our number one priority is our membership. If we all strive to

replace ourselves and encourage our Candidate to replacehimself, we will soon be on our way to a stronger membershipfor Rameses Shrine. This will bring more ideas and hands towork for our Special Children.

I wish all those confined to home a speedy recovery.

One of the most important challenges that Shriners arefacing is the declining membership and it isimportant that each Shriner takes an active

part in changing this decline. The only thingwe have to do is replace ourselves bysponsoring a new member. This soundsvery easy, but you have to work on it. Itwill not happen by its self. The key toall the Shrines problems areconnected to membership.

At the present time, our hospitalsare operating on a deficit budgetwhich means that it is taking moremoney to operate them than is beingraised each year. If we have moreShriners we have more money beingraised. It is the old story more people, more money, more help, new ideas and thelist goes on. Take up the challenge and sign upa new Shriner today.

One of the important events that will happen in 2010is the Imperial Session in Toronto. I would urge each Club, each

Unit, and each Noble to make plans to attend and take a part inthis very special event.

Being in Toronto, home of Rameses, the 2010 ImperialSession will never be any closer for you to travel to and enjoy.

Even though it will be in your back yard, consider staying atthe hotel with your fellow Nobles and enjoy all the

fun and fellowship that you can onlyexperience by being there. Start planning

now; it will be here before you know it. Rameses will be staying at the

Delta Chelsea Hotel and the detailswill be available very soon so theClubs and Nobles can book theirrooms through the Temple. Whenplanning your booking I wouldsuggest booking in on Saturdayor Sunday and booking out onThursday morning.

I am also looking forward tovisiting many of the Clubs and Units

in the months ahead as I travel totheir elections and installations. It is

always wonderful to see friends and enjoya good night at one of the Clubs.

Best wishes for safe and happy travels, andremember, Shriners do it Best.

Gord donated $1,300 in lieu of thenormal donation from his annualgolf tournament and now Manulife

Securities will be matching his donationdollar for dollar. This isn’t the first time orhopefully the last we will see of Gord’sgenerosity.

If you have any spare cash in yourpocket, stay away from Rick, he will try tolighten your load, turn it over to the 100Million Dollar Fund and even provide youwith a certificate.

Got the urge for public service?Election fever is heating up around theClub; hopefully if the entire executivemove up a 3rd VP needs to step up to theplate and new directors will be needed. Before your birth certificate expires, putyour name forward to our President orother officer, take a shot at running theClub, it’s a real satisfying experience!

Parades are in full swing for the Maid, the ‘41 clown truck and the recently outof retirement, orange crate truck nowpiloted by Nobel Mark Taylor.

Two outings planned in November andtwo more in December so get pipedaboard to sail the Maid or put your bestface on with our clowns. All three Unitscarried our flag in the annual MerritonLabour Day and St Catharines Grape andWine parades, both support largeturnouts of spectators to cheer us on.Remember, it’s your Maid. Come out forsome fun!

I know this will come back to hauntme and probably shouldn’t mention itbut, there are good looking ladies in thecrowd which may help keep up yourinterest in re-signing for another voyage.Isn’t it fun to be a Shriner!

Our Shrine cakes received a little extrabaking when the Linkert Country Bakeryexperienced a fire delaying our pick-update slightly. Fortunately there were notoasted nuts on our shipment! Yearlycake sales started at the Vineland CraftShow on Thanksgiving weekend, a good

head start in completely selling-out ourshipment. If every member makes aneffort in selling to neighbours andfriends, and signing up for in house salesat the Club, we will be out of cakes in notime. Don’t think maybe the other guyswill do it; “Procrastination is the greatestlabour-saving invention of all time.” TheShrine Club needs you super salesmen!

If you’re looking for a fun degreecheck out the Vagabonds and enquireabout joining.

The Niagara Club has been granted acharter from Jungle #1 in Grove City, PA.Noble Walter Brooks was appointed ChiefTramp for the inaugural year of our veryown Jungle #2. Some 25 CanadianNobles were installed including two fromthe Divan when the US tramps came upfrom Pennsylvania in August.

More fun meetings, if September’smeeting was any indication, will be heldmonthly.

Our first dinner meeting after thesummer recess had a slightly differentformat in that the meal was served buffetstyle by a new caterer. Apparently it waswell received, I was late and misseddinner. Every single scrap of fooddisappeared off that buffet table

including the last dessert consumed wellafter dinner during our business meeting.

September’s Car Show opened withsunny skies and warm weather with agood turn-out of hotrods and vintagecars. Even had a full-sized, privatelyowned fire truck as an entry. Our Clubwas the snack bar but more importantlythe location of the washrooms so therewas a constant flow (no pun intended) ofvisitors through the building. A goodopportunity to show off our Shrinememorabilia and we even sold somecakes.

The Christmas Fantasy is scheduled forthe 20th of this month, here’s youropportunity to see all those happy kids, agreat show and lend a hand as one ofSanta’s helpers. Stuffers for the candycane and sugar plum goodie bags will beneeded after our November dinnermeeting so stick around and give us ahand.

Just seen on the internet: “Insideevery older person is a younger personwondering what the heck happened.”

Shrine Fez in Danger ofExtinction?

The most distinguishing item ofapparel in all Shrinedom may be in

danger of extinction - the red Fez. Itwas adopted by the founding fathers

of the Shrine of North America in1872, and has become synonymous

with all that is good and noble in ourgreat fraternity.

But, the red Fez that sets us apartfrom all other civic and socialorganizations is seemingly in dangerof becoming extinct. At statedmeetings, Shrine parades, dinners andother official Shrine functions -baseball caps, cowboy hats and sunvisors have taken the place of thedistinctive red Fez. Don’t let the Fezbecome extinct. Wear your Fez and leteveryone know that you’re proud tobe a Shriner.

By Noble John SimpsonSHEBA SHRINE CLUB

The following is the story about how we got involved inthe Mexico City Shrine Children’s Hospital WheelchairProject.

It all began with a visit to the Shriners Children’s Hospitalin Mexico City this past April by Noble Gerald (Jerry) Phillipsof the Sheba Shrine Club located in Barrie. He, along with anumber of Shriners from Calgary, were taken on atour of the hospital. It wasdifficult toimagine thatthis three-year-old, 84-bedfacility saw anestimated 44,000children last year.

Children withbroken bones, burns, cuts andbruises and variousmedical conditionstoo numerous tomention, were caredfor by a dedicated staff.

When the goodbyes werebeing exchanged, a staff member was asked if there wasanything that they desperately needed. The answer was,“send me a wheelchair”.

Upon his return to Canada, Jerry sat chatting to JohnSimpson, also a Shriner, telling him of his trip. When hementioned that they required a wheelchair, John’s responsewas “why one, let’s send them as many as we can”.

So it began, the letters to other Shrine Clubs, localhospitals and nursing homes, asking for donations ofwheelchairs, walkers, crutches or canes. New or used, theShrine Club members would make sure that they were all ingood condition for shipment.

Soon, calls were received from all over Southern Ontarioand arrangements made to pick up donated equipment forthe Mexico Shrine Hospital. They quickly had enoughdonations to fill three pallets. Jerry’s garage looked like awarehouse!

Noble Don Thorne arranged transportation with TheMaster’s Group in Kitchener, Ontario, who looked aftertransportation as well as the bonds required by all customs

agencies and three pallets were shipped off toMexico City. These pallets

contained: 13wheelchairs; 12pair of crutches;5 canes; 4 foldingwalkers; 2 handwalkers; 4 seatingpads and 1 clearplastic feeding tray.

It must be notedthat Clubs withinthe Shrineorganization such asSheba Shrine Club of

Barrie, The Order ofQuetzalcoatl (Teocalli

#383) and The Color Party ofSheba Shrine Club were very generous with funds to coverthe initial shipping costs.

But wait! It doesn’t stop there. The calls are still comingin requesting equipment to be picked up. So as long as thedonations keep coming, Jerry and John will find a way to getthem to the needy kids at the Shrine Children’s Hospital inMexico City.

Any Shrine Unit or Teocalli that wishes to help, wedesperately need money to pay for additional shipments. Ifyou have access to equipment or your Unit would like todonate money to assist with transportation, please call JohnSimpson at 705-361-2893.

Howdy dear and gentle readers. Awarm welcome is extended to y’allfrom we at the Rameses Hillbilly

Shrine Club. Hope y’all enjoy reading this regular

column of information, adviceand sheer wonderment. I amenjoying the summer weathertyping this effort while sittingon the front porch of ParkesGeneral Store. Right nearby is abarrel of fresh apples that justarrived from Frankland County. Iguess autumn is on the way.Always nice to sit and chat withGeneral Manager and CountyCensus Taker, M. J. Parkes.

A big thank you to all youfolks who contacted meregarding a typographic error inmy last column, but I mustexplain: one time I said to myUncle Skylar down inRidgemount, Tennessee that Iwas concerned perhaps nobodyever read my Papyrus columns.Well, he told me he reckonedone way to find out would be,every once in awhile to make atyping or spelling error and sitback and see how manyreaders phone you. Yup folks, that old trick sure seems tohave worked!

I would like to devote thiscolumn to our Club President, our own Cuzin’ Noble JimRennie and on behalf of all weHillbilly Club members and ourdistinguished Hillbillies of Clan46, very best ofcongratulations. During the summer heand his wife, Lady Barb, took the horseand buggy down to a (Shriner) HillbillyConvention in Ohio where he was chosenas International Hillbilly of the Year! Weare all excited that one of our ownreached such a plateau, especiallyconsidering there are thousands ofShriner Hillbillies throughout NorthAmerica.

Now, this is the icing on the cake, butknowing Cuzin’ Jim for as long as I haveand if you know him, this honour is trulya very appropriate one to be bestowed. However, at the same time, his demeanorhasn’t changed a lick. He has alwaysbeen, and continues to be, the same fineperson we Masons and Shriners have

come to respect and support. Heconstantly upholds the Masonic traditionsand gives 110% to the reason all of usare Shriners, those very special littlechildren who depend on us. Cuzin’ Jimwould literally ‘give you the shirt off hisback’ if need be. His daily practice of ourMasonic traditions are happily adoptedby those of us who are lucky enough tospend time with him and his wife, Lady

Barb. Cuzin’ Jim, we know you will wearthe honour proudly, but with your samerefined dignity. This folks, is yet anotherexample of how far a fellow can progressin life and Masonry when he has a true, supportive wife backing him 110%. Thankyou, Lady Barb.

Folks, to bring you up to date, ourClub participated in severalparades this summer. July 11th we,along with members of the NewBeaver Shrine Club, paraded inNorland Ontario’s 150thanniversary parade. August 7th theHillbillies as well as many otherShriners, Clubs and Units, paradedat the Alliston Potato Festival. OnAugust 20th we headed down toDundas, Ontario (along withOuthouse One in Hamilton) toparade at the Annual CactusFestival. On September 5th, wealong with Oshawa Shriners, paraded at Kinmount, Ontario aspart of their Annual Fair, and therethe Hillbilly Club once again wonprizes for our floats andequipment, our float won SecondPrize and the Hillbilly Gals trailerwon Third Prize.

On September 19th, theThornhill Annual Wheat SheafFestival was held, however, theirannual parade in which ShrineClubs and Units participate wascancelled. In lieu, however, it wasrequested the Hillbilly Club set up astationary display to show off ourparade equipment and allow us tospend a few hours talking tofestival goers, promotingShrinedom and answering theirquestions. The opportunity not onlyallowed the kind folks a chance to

view up close our parade equipment butalso to enjoy some Hillbilly-type gamesand a Hillbilly BBQ. It was a fine day andsurprisingly, many folks seemed to knowlittle about Shriners and our dedicatedefforts for our special children.

One thing seems clear, dear reader, although we receive excellent and warmreceptions in our GTA area parades, it

Fall has arrived; our July/Augustholidays are over. Our High Priestess,Lady Barbara Pennock has been very

busy with her Official Visits to our Clubs,Trent Severn Ladies’ Shrine Club, where Ithink she became an egg thrower,Sharamazda Ladies’ Shrine Club, inBarrie, Niagara Peninsula Shrine Club,Salaam Ladies’ Shrine Club, inCollingwood and Sesemar Ladies’ ShrineClub in Hamilton. Lady Barbara alsoattended our Great Lakes Unit Meet inIndianapolis, Indiana where the Units ofthe area demonstrated the efforts of theirpracticing in their drum corps, patrols, line dancing etc. The Blue MountainStepper performed for her.

The Blue Mountain Steppers of SalaamLadies Shrine Club was officially formedin June, 1997, under the direction of LadyRuth Gilpin. Not knowing what to namethe Square Dance Unit, the Club wasasked for suggestions and Lady MaryStephens came up with the name “TheBlue Mountain Steppers.” There werenine Charter Members, Captain WilmaZeggil, Ladies Ingrid Lawson, TeresaEngel, Lola Stewart, Jeannette Potts, JudyHenson, Shirley MacKenzie, Joan Wagg

and Ruth Gilpin. There first trip to our Great Lakes Unit

Meet in September 1997, held in Torontofound these Ladies hard at work. LadiesRuth and Wilma bought yards and yardsfor material to make costumes, hours ofpractice to perfect their dance and manymeetings were held in preparation fortheir début. Our next host city wasLouisville, Kentucky and being a longways from home they decided they wouldtake a male companion and I think thehonour went to Noble Dr. Ovis Wagg. Ibet he has some stories to tell. Of coursethere have been many trips made sincethen.

When these Ladies are not practicing, they are working hard fundraising for theShriners Hospital in Montreal. Under thedirection of Lady Wilma they havebecome well known in the Collingwoodarea for their catering capabilities atweddings, anniversaries, and birthday andChristmas parties. These funds have beenused to purchase specialized equipmentfor individual patient needs, as well astoys, books, clothes and toiletries toassist in the day to day comfort of ourspecial needs children in the hospital.

Each year in March, a Spring Tea ishosted by Bokhara Court at RamesesShrine Centre, where all of Bokhara’s

Clubs and Units present their monetarydonations and the above. The highlight ofthe tea is a representative of our hospitalis usually on hand to receive these andgives us an update on the hospital, andthe new and improving methods fortreating our patients. Often a patient andfamily members are here and we receivea story from them and a chance to speakand ask questions on their experiences inour hospital. They are so appreciative ofwhat we do. It is wonderful to know thatwe do make a difference in someone’slife.

Our work continues as our officersand members prepare for our Ceremonial,November 14, 2009 to welcome our newCandidates into our membership. Ournew members are encouraged to join ourClubs and Units, to learn about the dutiesof our elected line officers. We partnered with Petro-Canada almostfive months ago and created awonderful and simple program to help

the Shrine earn money nationally. All we needed to do was fuel our vehicles at

Petro-Canada. It was that simple. We were given9 months to show that the Shriners were theright group to partner with and are trulydedicated to their cause and will do this withpassion. At the same time, we were alsoallowed to collect Petro-Points and get enteredin a chance to win a trip-for-two to theOlympics.

The first quarter of this program has broughtin a significant number of activations. With22,605 cards activated across the ShrineCenters as of July 1st, with enough cards outamong our members and supporters togenerate over $900,000 in fundraising dollars!

The potential earnings are much greater thanthis and we need every bit we can get this year.We need you to start using your Shriners cardtoday.

That is the good part of the story. Nobles, I

Ask not what the Shrine can do for you... Ask what you can do for the Shrine!

regret to inform you that merely activating cardswill not make us successful. Our combined usagein this program, since April 1st, has onlyamounted to 1% of what we can achieve. This isunacceptable!

If we ever wish to benefit from this easy, fun,and profitable way to generate funds for theShrine, we need to change our behaviour. Afterall, that is our creed, to do the things we like asa fun loving group of men with a purpose. Youneed to start using your cards today, fortomorrow will be too late!

Your Divan is very committed to this causeand they believe that there is no greateropportunity than to dedicate yourself andparticipate in this program. We cannot do thiswithout your help!

To realize that value, you need to start usingyour card at each and every fill-up. If you do nothave a card yet, ask for one and start using it.

Ask those around you if they are using theirs. If you need to go a bit out of the way to do so,your participation and dedication to this causewould mean a great deal to the Shrine.

would appear the great responsereceived in our smaller towns andcommunities can be somewhat attributedto the result of much radio, television andpress which promote and publicizeShriners and more particularly our ShrineHospitals and our very special children.

Sure makes a feller proud to be a partof our great Fraternity.

A newly decorated Hillbilly paradevehicle has made its public appearancethanks to the Burning Sands Potts andPanns Company and support from theParkes General Store. Be sure to look itover next time you attend one of ourparades. What do you mean, you don’tattend our parades? Being Shriners, aren’t we supposed to be having fun?

Gentle readers, forgot to tell y’all, back last November some of us Cuzinstook the advice of Hillbilly Cuzin’ BobWhitmarsh (P.P.) and attended the localdrive-in theatre which are open all year.Well folks, we had just parked our DeSotoand I duct-taped the speaker snuggly tothe side window (the glass is missing),when one of the Cuzins noticed anothermetal box hanging on the pole. He askedme what it was for and although I suredidn’t know, I figured it must have been atwo-way radio to be used to order upfood from the concession stand. So, Iremoved the box from the pole, broughtit into the car, put it up close to mymouth and talked into it. However,

nothing much happened and nobodyanswered. Then one of the Cuzinssuggested I should try and twist thevolume knob on the front. I did so and Iam here to tell you, I near about burnedmy face off! Turned out that outfit was ahigh-powered, in-car heater for winteruse in the cars. What will they think ofnext folks?

The Ninth Annual Hillbilly Degree andChowdown (now known as the Gatheringof the Clans and Country Chow Down)was held on September 26th up inKirkfield, Ontario thanks to the kindnessof hosts Noble Bob and Lady MarionO’Brien.

As the column I am typing here isscheduled to be submitted by September14th for inclusion into the NovemberPapyrus, I will give you ‘an event report’in my next column. For now, gentlereader, I shall bid adieu, grab one ofthose fresh apples out of the barrel and

head on back to the farm. A reminder, it’s almost time to oil up

those rakes because any day now theleaves will be starting to fall! (Now y’allknow why we Hillbillies only plant pinetrees).

Permit me to pass along our besthopes and wishes to all our Shrinerfriends, neighbours and family membersand especially those who may not beenjoying the best of health at this time.May the GAOTU continue to watch over, guide and bless you all.

It is a pleasure being part of yourreading time. See you all a little furtherdown the road. Be kind to your dogs, cats, horses and cows.

Thank you all, on behalf of ClubPresident Noble (Cuzin’) Jim Rennie 905-640-2143 (Stouffville, Ontario)

This past July at the 2009 Imperial Sessions in San Antonio Ihad the opportunity to attend two membership sessions. One of the sessions previewed a new membership tool that

will be made available in October of this year. It is called the“Shriners Village” and is an exciting new addition to the website. There will be more information regarding this in the nextissue. The other session was a luncheon to celebrate the ShrineCentres that had a positive change in membership last year. Atpresent, Rameses Shriners has a positive membership changefor 2009.

Shrine Centres that had a positive change, even if it was stilla loss was presented a bronze or silver award. Those who had apositive increase received a gold award. There was a lot ofenergy and a celebratory feeling in the room. Over the last 6years we have initiated or restored an average of 140 Nobles ayear, a commendable record. Shriners International is about6500 per year. The Black Camel and suspensions however, continues to takes as many.

Nobles, we need your help. The Divan members along withthe Membership Workteam cannot affect change or growthwithout the help of the various Clubs/Units and their members. My email address is [email protected]. Nobles Jerry Pedersen and Roger Pitre put their heads and hearts togetherrecently to build a special computer for 6-year old Nolan Preston. ThePeterborough grade one student has the full use of only one hand. His

Noble Pedersen put his skills to work and according to the Shriners, Nolan is morethan pleased with his new computer. Noble Pitre presented Nolan with their technicalwork of art and his smile was our reward.

As usual, the Oshawa Club did not take a summer break. The five Club Unitsattended numerous parades and raised money at various barbecues held outside theClub building.

Another successful event was organized by the Mini-Car Unit when they held agiant yard sale in early September. The boys enjoyed the selling and the customerswalked away with great bargains and lots of smiles.

The fall is our favorite time of year when we hold regular meetings at the Club andhead out almost every weekend to the fall and winter parades.

All Shriners are welcome to join us on the third Wednesday of each month.
