November 2018 LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Dear Members,Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to be at Lake Mohawk Country Club! It is a great time to begin thinking about the holiday season and all of the things we have to be grateful for - from the lake to the beaches and all of the great people that live here at LMCC. But with all that we are given, we need to take responsibility for all of it as well. The Annual Meeting is approaching and will be held on Saturday, November 17th . It is critical that we all participate.Kindly review the October issue of The Papoose and make informed decisions on the topics at hand. Letters were also sent to all Members in good standing. There are plenty of ways for everyone to “meet the candidates,” as well as learn more about updates to the By-Laws and changes in the CAM charges. At the time of printing, it was uncertain as to whether the decision regarding the pool would be made at the Annual Meeting or a later date. We want to be sure that all of the details regarding the pool are available to our Members before asking them to make a decision. The “due diligence” period will include a review of operations, forecasts, and potential financing plans. The decision will be ultimately made by our Membership. The more Members that attend and become informed, the better we are as a community. If I can be of any assistance please call me at the Club 973.729.6156 or email me at [email protected] is not too late to formally welcome Sabine Watson to the Management Team at LMCC. Sabine joined the staff on September 10 as our in-house LMCC Engineer. Sabine holds a Masters of Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to LMCC. Sabine has prior experience of working in the LMCC Reservation as Club account engineer, while she was employed with CP Engineering. We look to expand on the foundation of our current engineering efforts, while planning for the future. We will increase value and productivity, while controlling costs and efficiencies throughout the Club properties and the reservation. Please join me in welcoming Sabine! As the weather gets cooler, we invite you to come to the Clubhouse and check out the Members’ Room. We have a new menu and plans for some fun activities in the coming months. Come check out Football Sunday, and Trivia Night! We have our traditional events to mark the holidays here at LMCC. The annual Christmas tree lighting will be on Sunday November 25th in the Plaza and on the Boardwalk. This year’s Member’s Day for the German Christmas Market will be Friday November 30th.May your Thanksgiving Holiday be wonderful and filled with family, friends and lasting memories. Plan to share some of your holiday time with us and take advantage of all that LMCC has to offer.See you at the Club.

Sincerely,

John J. Stanley, CCMGENERAL MANAGER

Fall on the Lake

Leaves soon encroaching as they fall from the trees,

From Green to Gold, colors so bold,

Cooler temps are sure to appease

As we walk on the path

Good blessing we hath, as final Summer days do descend

Smiles on our faces, enjoying all the graces

Of our Lake that we must commend

Fall on the Lake

Exciting, quiver and shake

As we try not to get out of hand

Sweaters at night, the wind is just right

To pilot our boats back to land

The off-season is upon us at Lake Mohawk but that doesn’t stop the SkiHawks from working hard to prepare for next year. The Board of Trustees are meeting and Committees are being formed. All current

skiers can check in with Team Snap to see where to volunteer your talents and contributions. Details about our holiday party will be posted soon. The Labor Day show was a great conclusion of the 2018 season, including the unstoppable four story pyramid. Any new skiers interesting in joining or just learning more about our family-friendly team, please email [email protected]. As of this writing, our fall fundraiser is underway, and it is during this month of thanks that we are especially grateful to all of the homeowners for your trust and support. •

After 31 very competitive holes, Valerie Horan became Lake Mohawk Golf Club’s 2018 Ladies'

Golf Club Champion and Leslie Plifka, the Runner-up. Both are residents of Sparta. It was such a joy to watch their sportsmanship and encouragement of each other through two days of challenging competition held on August 18-19. It is very difficult to imagine the pressure and mental strain it takes to play such a match. The concentration required on every shot for such a long duration, while under the spotlight of a gallery watching, is most demanding and exhausting. These ladies are true competitors and true champions. It was also a great pleasure to watch the conclusion of the 18-hole A-Flight competition between Debra Nicholson Marcellus and Carol Cervino. As a newer player, this was Carol's first such competition. The exciting match ended on the last putt on hole number 18! Congratulations to Deb Marcellus for winning, and Carol Cervino, for becoming the Runner-up. Both players are residents of Sparta.

Also, out competing on the course were Fran Howe and Melanie Rowbotham Ryder, competing for the title Best of Nine. As described, this was a 9-hole match. Fran Howe won and Melanie Rider, in her first competition, become the Runner-up. Fran Howe, a resident of Sparta, is Lake Mohawk Golf Club’s most senior woman golfer, having been a club member since 1979. Melanie Ryder is one of the newer players at the Club, with this being her first such competition and less than two years of experience playing the sport. She has been taking lessons with the PGA professionals at Lake Mohawk Golf Club. Ryder is a resident of Lake Hopatcong. The results of other 9-hole matches that were played during this past week were:9-Hole A Flight: Nina Booth, Winner; Barbara Rice, Runner-up9-Hole B Flight: Barbara Urso, Winner; Esther Kashkin, Runner-up9-Hole C Flight: Jan Keefer, Winner; Peggy Thompson, Runner-up

“It was especially rewarding to see new golfers come up the ranks and join our 18-hole group. Carol and Melanie have been working hard on their games over the last couple of years. To see them smile as they competed on Championship Sunday is something we golfers embrace and encourage,” said Melva Cummings, President of the golf club’s Women’s Association, which holds this annual tournament. “I’m very proud to see such friendships and support in the midst of such well-matched competition.“The ladies played very well and we all enjoyed cheering them on,” said Steve Demmer, PGA General Manager of the golf club. “We have a long tradition here of fine tournaments that present enjoyable and challenging golf for both women and men. We were founded in 1928, so with 90 years of providing golf experiences and fine-tuning our parkland course, we have developed many fine golfers who take pride in their beautiful course and facilities.

This tournament is a perfect example of the high standards and great camaraderie we offer,” said Demmer. At the conclusion, the players and the gallery gathered in the Clubhouse to celebrate with cocktails and a delectable assortment of hors d'oeuvres, beautifully created by Executive Chef James Young and his kitchen staff.Lake Mohawk Golf Club has been providing the finest golf, dining, and social events in the area for 90 years. Members reside all over the tri-state area. The scenic 18-hole course in Sparta, NJ plays at a PAR 70 over 6,280 scenic yards. The elegant yet comfortable full-service Clubhouse features fine and casual dining, men’s and women’s locker rooms, meeting, and banquet space for unique weddings and special events. THE LAKE MOHAWK PRESERVATION FOUNDATIONANNUAL LAKE PRESERVATION RECOGNITION CELEBRATION

GENE DEPREZ TO BE HONORED SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17 WITH THE FRAN SMITH AWARD

This year the foundation is presenting the Fran Smith Award to recognize the volunteer leadership of Gene DePrez. The Lake Mohawk Preservation Foundation presents this award annually in the fall to an individual whose concern and involvement with preserving the quality of our lake, the headwaters of the Wallkill River, helps to preserve it for future generations. This award was created by the Foundation to honor the memory of Fran Smith, a long time General Manager of Lake Mohawk Country Club. She was a state and national leader in lake preservation. She petitioned to get the Plaza and Clubhouse placed on the New Jersey and National Register of Historic Places. During Gene's tenure, major improvements were made to the sidewalks and curbs of White Deer Plaza to encourage a more vibrant pedestrian friendly shopping and restaurant plaza; the Clubhouse interior was reconfigured for an elevator — providing greater access to our disabled and older Members while creating additional event space (the East Lounge) on the Ballroom level.

A strategic master plan was developed, parking was improved, alternative plans for the use of club properties were evaluated, and the first fireworks propelled from a volunteer designed and constructed set of barges brought the community together on land and on the water like never before.During the time Gene DePrez was vice president and Club president, the State mandated the rebuilding and strengthening of the dam and sluiceway on the main lake to prepare for a "once in 1000 year flood" (which ironically came during the construction and only by quick action by Club staff and volunteers was the temporary earthen coffer dam kept from a potentially catastrophic failure). The dam was rebuilt to meet federal and state requirements while preserving the historic character and charm of the Boardwalk and its iconic curving stucco wall. The interlocked steel piling covered with stucco replicates the original wall and actually serves as a higher dam, running from the East Shore Plaza to the sluice gate itself -- an idea based on a similar wall Gene had seen that protects Washington Harbour in Georgetown from frequent Potomac River flooding.

More recently Gene served as the first chair/president of the Lake Mohawk Preservation Foundation from 2012-2016. During its initial four years he helped it organize, define its mission, pursue tax- exempt status, and develop its policies and communications, while recruiting additional board members.

Gene was instrumental with other board members in attracting our early contributions, ranging from corporate foundation grants, substantial contributions from a number of Lake Mohawk residents and the LMCC House Committee, and ongoing financial or in-kind support from the Club, many area businesses through sponsorship of our events, and equally important, the more modest donations from many individuals, families and children dropped in to our Big Blue Water Bottle at Boardwalk events. It is for his unwavering commitment to the community that Gene is being honored with the Fran Smith Lake Preservation Award.

HAPPY VALLEY BEACH TO BE RECOGNIZED FOR VOLUNTEERISM

When the call went out for volunteers and supporters for Earth Day 2018, Eric Takach, President of Happy Valley Beach signed his beach up immediately. AESTHETICS COMMITTEE REMINDERS

AESTHETICS CLUB PLAN AGREEMENT REGULATIONS

Some of our neighbors may have received a letter from the LMCC Aesthetics Committee. e EDUCATION

The LMCC Lake Committee is dedicated to protecting the Main Lake, Upper Lake, Alpine Pool, Sleepy Lagoon and surrounding

watersheds of the Lake Mohawk Reservation. Through science-based advocacy, education and collaboration, the Lake Committee seeks to conserve and enhance the natural resources of the Reservation. With this information, they will educate the larger community on steps

we can all take to reach a healthier Lake Mohawk. By cooperating with federal, local and educational institutions, the LMCC Lake

Committee will communicate with residents to minimize the negative impact to our shared environment. The Lake Committee held a well-attended Membership meeting this past spring to educate Members on the current condition of the Lakes, as well as what they can do to

make a difference.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

- Plant deer resistant native plants.

- Understand lake safe lawn care practices.

- Prevent road runoff. Sweep your streets.

- Plant a rain garden on your property.

- Remove grass clippings and leaves to minimize carryover into the lakes. This is a highly effective nutrient control practice.

- Be aware of pathogens and practice proper cleanup of pet waste and septic pumping.

29THE PAPOOSE

Despite the fact that our boats and swimsuits are tucked away, the Lakes of our

community are always top of mind. In fact, it is a year round effort to maintain the health

and welfare of the water here at Lake Mohawk. Our leadership

and due diligence can be seen in a myriad of ways, and ultimately all contribute to good

water quality.

AWARENESS IS KEY

Lake Mohawk has been at the forefront of educating its Members for many years, with the mission of lake quality a top priority. GIS or Geographical Information Systems Modeling of the LMCC Drainage infrastructure (2017/2018), The 2015 Princeton Hydro Bathymetric Study,

and the Watershed Analysis or Outfall Study have all put us on the

path to water quality.

SEDIMENT REMOVAL

Land erosion can ultimately lead to sediment deposit in the lake.

When this happens, action needs to be taken to remove the potentia lly harmful debris. Over 180 tons of

sediment and debris were removed from our storm water drains in 2017

alone. More than 21 inlets were repaired during that time as well.

ON GOING WATER QUALITY MONITORING

Recent articles in the press reported on unacceptable levels of phosphorus in

several New Jersey lakes. Lake Mohawk engages with a team of professionals, such as Princeton Hydro and Aquatic Technologies , to monitor the quality of our lakes. Measurement of nutrients, such as phosphorus, is constant to be sure that the levels are acceptable.

LMCC leads the way in its initiatives to maintain a healthy lake for all.

In conjunction with the Van

Kirk Homestead’s current fall exhibit, “Traditions of the Black Forest”, Dr. Peter Lubrecht, guest speaker and published author,

will explain why so many Jerseyites can trace their ancestral roots to Germany. German immigrants and their descendants are integral to New Jersey’s history. During the American Revolution, Great Britain hired thirty thousand German troops to fight rebellious colonists. Five thousand of those troops marched across New Jersey from Princeton and Trenton all the way to the northern tip of Sussex County. In addition, when the state was young, these German immigrants founded villages that are now well-established communities. Many were lured by the freedom and opportunity in the Garden State, especially in the nineteenth century, as they escaped oppression and revolution.Known as a professor, actor, author and scholar in German American history, Dr. Peter Lubrecht’s books and presentations are committed to making History come alive! This historical program will be held on Thursday, November 8th at Sparta Presbyterian Church located at 32 Main Street from 7:00PM – 8:30PM. REPORT FROM THE PATHBRIDLE PATH COMMITTEE UPDATESSubmitted by Mark Woolley

Looking back at a somewhat wet Summer season, we hope members utilized the reestablished

Bridle Paths to gain safe access to the East side beaches and/or simply enjoyed them for long walks along the West side water front when weather permitted.Earlier this October, Bridle Path Committee (BPC) volunteers dedicated their time to trimming and clearing these reestablished paths for safe passage this Fall season. In addition, the BPC officially release two new reestablished paths, providing access from Woodlawn Road to Hillside Road, and Glenside Trail to Balanced Rock Terrace. The Committee plans to revisit all the reestablished paths again after all the colorful leaves have fallen to blow them clear for continued Membership usage. To provide a brief background of the Bridle Path System, the BPC has identified around 65 individual paths, of which about 35 are usable as recreational paths or will be usable with some attention. The remainder appear to be too steep or fully encompassed by drainage/water. All reestablished paths will have trail head markers for ease of identification around the Reservation. For the complete list and map, refer to the BPC page on the Member’s website at: https://lakemohawkcc.com/html/bridle-path-committee.cfm.We remind Members to walk the paths at your own risk, beware of uneven terrain, walk (not ride) your bikes on them, and respect private properties adjacent to the paths.

In addition, please clean up after your pets and adopt the “carry in, carry out” policy by not leaving garbage along the paths. Lastly, please ensure you carry your Club card when utilizing the paths, as these pathways are for Membership use only and you could be challenged by security or staff to confirm membership status. The BPC is always looking for new volunteers to support clean up days or maintaining sections of the reestablished paths within their area of the Reservation on an on-going basis. In addition, the BPC kindly requests Members who live adjacent to the Bridle Paths to please share their property surveys with the Country Club to help the Committee identify path borders. If you have any questions or are interested in volunteering, please contact committee chair Mark Woolley at [email protected] trails! •

Lake Mohawk Country Club and Golf Club Member, Nina Booth has always had an eye for

beauty and design. Not shy to make a new friend, Ms. Booth met Floral Designer Cathy Miller by chance. The conversation quickly turned to gardens, flowers, and Miller’s preserving of her home-grown flowers. After a bit, Miller shared that she in fact had spent over thirty years designing specially preserved floral arrangements for the White House.Booth mentioned her long and enjoyable Membership at Sparta’s Lake Mohawk Golf Club and Miller started envisioning a design. With a resume including the presentation of 62 floral arrangements to the White House for five U.S. Presidents and First Ladies, Ms. Miller’s work is very well known and respected. Set on the octagonal center table, the preserved floral arrangement was designed for the exact space, lighting, and angle of viewing by the designer.Last week, she placed her grown, preserved, custom floral design in the Golf Club’s grand entrance space. With 14 types of blooms, from artemisia to zinnias, the piece was designed to be seen “in the round,” from every angle.

Past residents in the White House described her work best. "Your work is unbelievably beautiful!" said Former First Lady Barbara Bush."Your creations bring special joy to all who are fortunate enough to see them," said Former First Lady Nancy Reagan.Miller has won many New Jersey Gardening awards and is past President of the Wyckoff, NJ Garden Club. Miller’s work has been featured in 49 magazines and 29 television appearances.

The design includes 14 types of blooms, from artemisia and zinnias to creamy white peonies and elegant roses all grown, harvested, and preserved by Miller.

Miller’s richly textured design is set in an antique vase and bowl. The open, airy design allows guests to see the restaurant’s welcome desk as they enter the Clubhouse. •

Before you take the leap, here are some things you should know:

Safety issues are a concern. Homeowners in Massachusetts recently experienced a natural gas tragedy caused by too much pressure in the local gas lines. This resulted in multiple explosions, dozens of fires and one death.

Gas is being shipped overseas. Gas exports are expected to grow exponentially in the coming months and years. Less gas at home means constricting supply. Less supply means higher prices.

The cost to switch is expensive. Utilities in our area are estimating the cost to convert at $14,000 or more. And with no guarantee of future low prices, the return on investment is uncertain at best.

Thinking of switching to gas?

Paid for by the Fuel Merchants Association of New Jersey.

There are many reasons why many of your neighbors have chosen to continue to heat their homes with heating oil:

It’s the safe option. Heating oil is biodegradable, nontoxic, nonflammable and it can’t explode. It’s the safest fuel around.

Homeowners have maximum choice. There are many local heating oil companies that provide quick and convenient service. And you can choose which one suits you best. That’s not the case when you are dealing with a utility.

The future is bright. With the advent of Ultra-low-sulfur heating oil combined with Bioheat®, today’s heating oil is clean, green and environmentally friendly.

No matter what you decide, it pays to get the facts. For more information, visit ThinkTwiceNJ.com.

Members of the Xi Beta Rho Sorority Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi International recently visited

Ginnie’s House Children’s Advocacy Center to tour the newly redecorated facility in Newton. The visit was arranged by Judy Nardone, a volunteer at the Center and also a Sorority member.Sorority sisters were met by Director Kristi Young and Volunteer-Events Coordinator Maryanne Mitchell. Members learned the process for a child as they enter into the system. The forensic Interview, medical protocol, therapy sessions and family advocacy...all occur in one place, Ginnie’s House. This reduces the multiple locations and numerous times a child must recount their painful experiences. Also, the center has a licensed mental health staff member to afford psychological/educational support for non-offending caregivers.Xi Beta Rho donated $1,000 to the center, and pledges future support. Recently, Sharon Giacchino of NORWESCAP presented a program at the home of member Sally Tauber on the Clean Diaper Initiative, formerly known as the Sussex County Diaper Bank. This organization gives out 6,000 diapers per month to families in need. The sorority donated funds to provide a baby with two months’ worth of diapers. Each year, Xi Beta Rho holds a major event, such as a Victorian Tea and Game Day or a Rummage Sale, or more, to raise funds in support of a variety of charities. Some other recent beneficiaries have been the Ecumenical Food Pantry, Sparta Ambulance Squad, Helping Horseshoe Therapy, Manna House and NAMI Sussex. Twice a year, they supply desserts for the Sparta Kiwanis picnics for Senior Citizens, and help families in need at the holidays, as well.

The Sorority is a social, cultural and service oriented organization. Members present programs of interest, hold socials, fundraise and conduct service projects to benefit the community. For information on the Sorority and its events, call President Sharon Corrigan at 973-726-3339. •

MARINE BEACH 3Submitted by Laura Ammaturo

We have enjoyed so many good times at Beach Three throughout the 2018 season! Our last

event was a small but strong Oktoberfest party with plenty of delicious food and good conversation. Thanks to Joe, Cindy, Petr, and especially Alena for cooking up a delicious feast. Thanks to all of our Beachgoers for bringing joy and camaraderie to our sands. Thanks also to the LMCC staff as well as the lifeguards and Marine Patrol for keeping us safe. Wishing everyone an upcoming holiday season filled with family, friends, and laughter.

BEACH FIVESubmitted by Eileen Hickey

It’s been quiet at Beach Five as we transition thru the seasons. I am writing this on the last day of

September and I am wondering where September went? The months are moving by too fast for me. Take a look at our next generation of Beach goers as they waddle in the lake with our Swan family. Three year olds, Claire Gauthier and Parker Kierney, are loving life in Lake Mohawk! Special hugs from Beach Five, you two!For those that haven’t already removed or secured their crafts for the winter, we ask that you pay special attention to how your canoe/kayak is tied down. Up turned crafts are subject to water log and poorly secured canoes/kayaks have been known to blow off the rack. If you are keeping your craft at the Beach for the winter, please take a moment to visit the beach to ensure it remains secure. Thanks.Keep the season of thankfulness alive and enjoy time spent with family and friends. We appreciate the support given to Beach Five this season and enjoyed our time with the Members this summer. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.”Marlene [email protected] [email protected]

While the winds were good for us in August and for the Commodore’s Cup on September

2, things change for the rest of September and October. The lack of wind coupled with inclement weather led to many cancellations. As this article goes to press, we still have two weekends of racing left on our schedule. Hopefully, there will be a few more races before we cross the finish line for 2018.The photo that accompanies this article was taken by Ian Oldridge of the start of the 2018 Commodore’s Cup. Rich Miner, who won the race, is in the blue Lightning, second boat from the right in the photo. Ian takes a lot of great photos of our club events that can be viewed on our web site. We are actively pursuing new court resurfacing to happen in 2019. If anyone or any company would like to make a private donation or special sponsorship please e-mail us at LAKEMOHAWKTENNIS.COM. Any additional funding to help make our courts the best they can be would be very welcome! One of our last events at the Lake Mohawk Tennis Club, was our first annual Sparta Open. A special thank you to our Pro, Brad Scheller who organized and ran this great event. We had over twenty teams come out to compete. It was a ton of fun for players and spectators alike.Brad had the following to say… “Our hopes are to build an annual event possibly even two tournaments next summer, that can grow bigger each year. Players coming from all over New Jersey, including the living legend Mark "Scoop" Malinowski a tennis author who has become quite a good player in his own right winning the men’s singles title with great fitness and consistency.” Women's title was won by Marilyn Liu with a really nice well rounded game and some huge forehand returns. The singles champions took home the $100 cash bonus and seemed very excited to do so. Club president, John Whilesmith won the Men's open doubles with his partner Mark Sanders with some great serve and volley tennis and many good poaching plays! Century Doubles was also quite a fun event with Club Member, Louis Bysiek and her son Ralph who were simply too much for the field. A lot of really good tennis and a great time! Thank you again, Brad.A special thank you to our Pros, Brad Scheller and Anne Lyons for sponsoring our first free clinics to our membership. We have had a huge positive response for the appreciation of having this added benefit to our Members. Be on the lookout for our calendar for next year’s clinics because they will be back!Next up…Sunday, November 11, at 11am - Club Clean up. Please come out to help.Friday, December 1, at 7pm - our annual Christmas Party. Details to follow.

As long as the weather is dry, and not to cold, please use the courts or the game room. Check www.lakemohawktennis.com for our weekly calendar.Don’t hesitate to contact us for questions, comments or feedback. Also, please send good pictures for posting on the website or this article!  [email protected].

See you on the courts!
