Once upon a Time

by Gabriel Okara

Page 5: Paper no.:14

Once upon a time, son, they used to laugh with their hearts

and laugh with their eyes:

Page 6: Paper no.:14

but now they only laugh with their teeth, while their ice-block-cold eyes

search behind my shadow.

Page 7: Paper no.:14

There was a time indeedthey used to shake hands with their hearts:

but that's gone, son.

Page 8: Paper no.:14

Now they shake hands without hearts:while their left hands search

my empty pockets.

Page 9: Paper no.:14

'Feel at home'! 'Come again':they say, and when I come

again and feelat home, once, twice,

Page 10: Paper no.:14

there will be no thrice -for then I find doors shut on me.

Page 11: Paper no.:14

So I have learned many things, son.I have learned to wear many faces

like dresses - home face,

Page 12: Paper no.:14

office face, street face, host face,

Page 13: Paper no.:14

cocktail face, with all their conforming smileslike a fixed portrait smile.

Page 14: Paper no.:14

And I have learned tooto laugh with only my teeth

and shake hands without my heart.

Page 15: Paper no.:14

I have also learned to say, 'Goodbye',when I mean 'Good-riddance';

Page 16: Paper no.:14

to say ' Glad to meet you',without being glad; and to say 'It's beennice talking to you', after being bored.

Page 17: Paper no.:14

But believe me, son.I want to be what I used to be

when I was like you. I wantto unlearn all these muting things.

Page 18: Paper no.:14

Most of all, I want to relearnhow to laugh, for my laugh in the mirror

shows only my teeth like a snake's bare fangs !

Page 19: Paper no.:14

So show me, son,how to laugh; show me how

I used to laugh and smileonce upon a time when I was like you.
