SECTION ARead the passage.

Do you like fruit? Many different types of fruit are grown in South-East Asia. Durian, for example, has been grown here for hundreds of years. 1It was first brought to Europe in 1599.

The durian plant is large. 2It has a tall, straight trunk and small leaves. Durian fruits vary greatly in size and shape. The skin is very thick and so the fruit does not break when it falls. The dark yellow pulp (the part which we eat) has a very high food value. It can be eaten raw or made into cakes, jam and ice-cream. The leaves and the roots can be used as a medicine to help people who are ill.

Bananas are another fruit common in South-East Asia although 3they also grow in Africa, Central America and South America. A fully grown banana stem can reach up to twelve metres in height with leaves up to three metres long. The average weight of a bunch of bananas is eleven kilos.

The fruit of the plantain, or cooking banana, is larger and less sweet than other bananas. 4It is used to make curries and many other delicious dishes.

Fruit is very nutritious and forms an important part if our diet. 5It is also very tasty. For good health we should all try to eat some fruit every day.
