MINUTES OF THE 111th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE PAPATOETOE CRICKET CLUB

Held on the 30th July 2017 at 1.30pm at the Papatoetoe Sports Centre.

2. Minutes from 110th Annual General Meeting Confirmation of Minutes from 110th Annual General Meeting Dennis Currie moved that the minutes be accepted as a fair and accurate record, Seconded Peter Boyd Carried 3. Matters Arising a) Roger Harris would like to know whether the club will see any improvement in the in the 2017/2018 season. Neil Ronaldson did point out that the team did well last season with coming third last season b) Peter Ambler pointed out to of the VP’s that need to come off the report, G Speedy and P Rich. c) One minute silence was held in honour of the obituaries for G Speedy and P Rich.

4. Presentation and adoption of Annual Report and Balance Sheet for the 2017/18 Season. Ossie Letelier moved that the Chairman’s and Presidents reports be accepted Seconded Neil Ronaldson Carried 5. ACA Report Iain Laxon a) Iain briefly spoke on the two Auckland Premier sides. b) There has been a significant increase in the registration of new players. 2015/2016 season there was a 15% increase and 2016/2017 an extra 5% increase. c) A new company has taken over the ground keeping contract for all the grounds in Auckland. It is an Australian company. d) There will be three T20s at Eden Park this season and one test (if the resource consent goes through for Sunday night). e) There is $695k to be allocated to clubs this season. f) New High Performance manager. g) The ACA CEO has gone to Bowls NZ and they will be announcing the new CEO over the next week or so. h) The Senior competitions administrator is on maternity leave. i) Ian thanked everyone for their contribution to cricket. j) There is funding available

Nigel Hurst acknowledge Peter Boyd’s contribution to the Club over the last 30 years.

7. Life Membership i. Wally Stamp briefly talked on Neil Ronaldson’s contribution to Papatoetoe Cricket Club. He was a Premier player for 20 years, six of these a captain. Auckland Club cricketer three times. He has helped with coaching of the premier side for the past few years or longer and has been one of the selectors of the top two sides. Wally Stamp moved that Neil Ronaldson be a Life member of Papatoetoe Cricket Club. Seconded Peter Ambler Carried ii. Nigel Hurst spoke on Vijay Soma’s contribution to Papatoetoe Cricket Club through is playing, coaching. Nigel moved that Vijay Soma be a life member of Papatoetoe Cricket Club Seconded Neil Ronaldson Carried Simon Poole read an email from Shane Singe on the nominations of Vijay Soma and Neil Ronaldson as life members.

8. General Business i. Roly responded to Roger’s comment on the Premier team. ii. The constitution is still in progress. This is a very old document that needs more work on it. iii. Letter to go to Garry congratulating him on being coach for ND Spirit. iv. Nigel thanked everyone for supporting the 111th AGM and thanked Megan and Simon for putting the report together and the AGM.

PAPATOETOE CRICKET CLUB CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

The last season has been a particularly successful one on the field once again, the performances

of our flagship Premier teams lead our club well across the season. The Premier Men’s side

had a stellar season that so very nearly ended in taking out the two day championship with

their penultimate game against Howick Pakuranga being the deciding match of the season.

Congratulations to Bhupinder, his selection team, Stephen and all the players for another

great season and let’s hope we can go that next step next season. Our ladies teams and

section continues to grow and prosper thanks to a lot of hard work and dedication by

Regina Lilii and Garry Wood. The results from our other two day and one day teams was very

encouraging, these teams are often the unsung heroes of our club whose deeds are not

always on show as prominently as our Premier results are, congratulations to you all, I hope

everyone enjoyed their season at Papatoetoe and we look forward to welcoming you back

as we fast approach the new season.

As many of you will be aware our Club Manager Simon Poole has decided to step down from

this role after 12 years, Simons service dedication and passion for everything Papatoetoe

Cricket is remarkable and this will be sorely missed along with his extensive knowledge of the

day to day running of the club that all of us take for granted, he made my role as Chairman a

pretty simple one and has been a pleasure to work alongside. Megan Speirs has also decided

to step away from her role at the club, Megan was initially in the role of secretary of the club

but over the last few years has had the responsibility of all of our Grant Funding applications

and reconciliations, her work in this area has enabled us to continue to function as a club, the

amount of time and effort Megan has put into this we cannot thank her enough for and we

are very grateful.

With changes of personal in our mist it is an appropriate time as a club to look to the future

as to the planning and personal required to lead our club in the coming years, as I mentioned

last year whilst our performances on the field have been encouraging we as a club have been

treading water for the last few years and we all as a committee agree we need to do more for

all our club members and get our focus back on being a great club that everyone is proud

of and wants to be part of again, it’s up to us to get our identity back, certainly the pleasing

results on the field helps generate a good vibe around the place but we need to do more

particularly in our junior club, give these people a club and people they can identify with,

make them and their families feel welcome, we are all aware of the changing demographics

of our club and society that have taken place over the last few years, and I don’t believe we

have embraced this as well as we could have and as I mentioned before the strength of our

junior section and lack of volunteers probably reflects this.

We as a club / committee need to address this for our club to prosper, we need some help

and input from a lot more people as it’s easy to see the governance of the club presently

is not a great reflection of our actual membership base their families and South Auckland

generally. Our current committee has only two people who aren’t in some sort of paid role

at the club and if we are perfectly honest we would both admit it is about time to take a step

away to encourage new people and ideas through.

This past year has seen the changing of staff at Kolmar, the introduction of Barry and Nikki

and there enthusiasm to help has continued the great relationship we have with the Sports

Centre. With the continued support of the Kolmar Trust and its supporters many of our junior

members and families who would normally struggled to join have benefitted from the Chose

Sport initiative again this year enabling them to be members and play at the club

Like all organizations we continue to have to rely on funding for various aspects of the

running of our club and this avenue continues to be our major source of revenue and an

area where Gary Troup’s expertise and knowledge has once again served us well and we are

truly indebted to him for this. Funding makes up over 70% of our income with subscriptions

supplying the rest so it is important moving forward that we seek further sponsorship

opportunities and utilize other avenues such as donations to help in the running of our club,

every little bit will help

To all of our sponsors and charitable trusts as well as Auckland Cricket who continue support

us, thank you so much.

To all our volunteers, coaches mangers , supporters and parents thank you all very much, but

we still require more of you, I encourage you all to get involved in your club in the upcoming

season and beyond, we all need to help out be in large or small contributions so our club

continues to perform and function efficiently.

To all our players, I hope you enjoyed your season and look forward to seeing you all back at

the club later in the year when the new season rolls around.

Chairman Papatoetoe Cricket Club

THANK YOU SIMON POOLE

After 12 years in the role of Club Manager Simon Poole has decided not to renew his contract and will relinquish his position on the 31st May 2018.

Simon commenced in this role in 2006 following our Centennial and has been a major driving force in not only the day to day running of the club but the success and progress we have made and continue to make.

With the removal of our own clubrooms during the 2009-2010 season and we as a club not being able to utilize the now Kolmar Centre till late 2011 he saw us through some incredibly turbulent times particularly off the field as our club was severely impacted both financially and playing numbers wise.

Through this period and ever since he has continued to make sure we always have teams on the field, gear provided, junior teams transported and that the club was in good heart and spirit so we could function as a club again.

Simon’s service and dedication well surpassed the remuneration and the hours this “part time” role was meant to be, but his sole drive in the role was for the betterment of our club and his love for Papatoetoe Cricket.

He has continued his coaching and his involvement with Manukau Districts Cricket, flying the Papatoetoe flag supporting our junior club throughout this time.

In 2010 Simon was made a Life Member of Papatoetoe Cricket Club. Along with the day to day roles it’s the unseen hours and time Simon has sacrificed, attending meetings with the ACA, representing our club at user group, and grounds meetings, liaising with the groundsmen being a handyman and go-to guy around the centre that many don’t see but most of us expect someone to do.

Personally I have known Simon for over 35 years from our playing days to more recently as the 6 years as Chairman of our club, his integrity, passion, drive and commitment for our club I cannot thank him enough for, he has been great to work with and will be missed, we as a club are truly indebted to Simon.

We as a committee will now be working through the direction and roles required to fill this position and will use this as a time to refocus on what is required to continue to progress the club forward and meet the needs of our membership, we would encourage any feedback or suggestions you all may have.

Simon, on behalf of all of our club I thank you for all the roles you have filled and all that you have done during the last 12 years, I know you will not be lost to us and I look forward to you now being able to enjoy your role as a Life Member and supporter of our club.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The 2017/8 season has come and gone and it seems like yesterday that I was writing last

years’ report! This season will go down as one of the most frustrating yet at the same time

exciting years for some time. Our Premier men came so close to the two- day title and our

Premier Woman were 1.5 points away from making the one- day final.

I would like to thank Stephen Money for his leadership this year. Your team played some

outstanding cricket throughout the year and were so close to that elusive title you and your

team worked so hard for. Congratulations to Logan Clark in being awarded player of the

year, however it was a pretty hard decision with many players having outstanding seasons.

Unfinished business men.

Our Woman’s team was superbly led by Lelia Bourne who had the best stats in terms of

keeping dismissals across all teams in Premier Woman’s Cricket an outstanding achievement.

It is very pleasing to see the improvement in results.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all Captains in our grade sides for their leadership

and commitment to our club. To the players who took the field each Saturday wearing our

club colours thank you for your efforts and congratulations on your success.

At last year’s AGM I had the pleasure of witnessing the election of two new Life Members.

Both Neil Ronaldson and Vee Jay Soma were admitted to this fine group and it was special to

see both men being supported by friends and family.

I received a very sad call last month informing me that Simon Poole is stepping down from his

role as club manager. Simon has been a wonderful servant both as a player and administrator

for well over thirty years. Thank you Simon for all you have done for our club. I certainly hope

we still see you at the clubrooms for a pint or two.

A club does not run itself and we are very fortunate to have good people giving their time off

the field so you can enjoy your time on the field. Peter Boyd our chairman and his committee

continue to do an excellent job in insuring the smooth running of our club on a daily basis.

Your work is appreciated believe me. The weekly newsletter Regina puts out is a tremendous

initiative that keeps members up to date with what is happening. If you do not receive this

please inform a committee member so your e mail details can be added to the list.

Finally I wish all Members a safe and warm winter. September is only a few months away and

it will all start again. Be prepared get fit see you then

COACHING DIRECTOR’S REPORT

The 2017-18 was again a very successful year in the Club’s drive to have cricket played over a wide and diverse range of the local community. Internally numbers grew in two key areas.

1. The year 6 boys where the Club had two sides

2. The under 12 and 15 girls where two new sides form Holy Cross joined after Christmas

The school program counted over 4000 students coached or playing in some type of competitive cricket game, which equated to over 20,000 hits in local schools. This ranged for Have a Go days in 15 schools that incorporated several codes along with cricket giving the children taster session.

The most significant milestone was the advent of a very successful T20 competition on Sundays run by Vikram Bhagia. The tournament was started from scratch and ended up with eight teams, mostly due to Vikram’s tenacity and perseverance so the credit for this successful competition is undoubtedly based on his energy and commitment.

The growth of girl’s cricket was another significant step up in the Club’s progress in the local community. Holly Cross represented the school and the community amazingly well as ambassadors for the game. One outcome for the Club was the school then entered two girl’s sides in the Saturday competitions as well as five sides in the after school Blitz for year 5 and 6 pupils.

During the season, the Club forged a relationship with Counties Manukau Kirikiti Association as a means of tapping into that sporting community. The Club provided with coaching in local schools and assisted with local tournaments where able. The closeness of the two formats was highlighted when the Papatoetoe Premier Women’s team entered in and won a Kilikiti tournament in January.

The Club once again utilised the services of a coach out from England. This year we had George Horsley who proved to be a popular and welcome addition to the Men’s Reserve side as well as the school and club coaching staff. He even made an appearance on SKY TV as New Zealand Cricket sought to promote cricket in diverse communities.

PREMIER MEN CAPTAIN'S REPORT

This season has seen our team solidify the work we did last year. Our results reflect the work that the squad has done in pre-season as well as throughout the season. We have developed into one of the most consistent teams in all formats and one that is always hard to beat.

The success of our team wouldn’t be possible without the help of people at the club. “General” John Lee a key member of our group using his vast experience to impart his wisdom. He is invaluable and ensures that all the small things run smoothly, but most importantly reminds us what it means to play for Papatoetoe. Thank you to Brett Paterson for taking up the scoring duties again this year. Thank you to the committee for all your support. I would like to especially acknowledge Nigel Hurst for his fantastic support especially when we are playing at home. He can always be counted on for some motivational words. I would also like to personally thank Simon Poole for all the

tremendous work that he has done for the club. Poole you have been a massive influence on my cricket and appreciate all the work you have done. A massive thanks to Neil Ronaldson for his time as selector again this season. Another enormous thanks to Vijay as the Godfather of the reserves.

We started the season with a trip to Mount Manganui. The purpose of this was to do team building as well as set goals for what we wanted to achieve this season. We welcomed Josh Plummer and welcomed Ollie Pringle back, both playing significant roles in the Premier side this year. The Premier and Reserves side aimed especially high and we were both aiming for silverware in all competitions. Aspirational, but realistically achievable with hard work.

Our professionalism at training increased again this year. We are developing a culture where people are expected to turn up to training and work hard. This was a key idea that we were not getting right previously with too many passengers in the training squad. It is an area we must look to advance if we wish to get the success we are after. It was pleasing to see most players putting in the work for hours before and after training. We also were a fitter side with a fitness component incorporated into every training.

In our one day competition we won five of our seven games. Unfortunately, this was not good enough to get us through to the knock out stages. We were in the tougher group, our record in the other group would have seen us qualify first. In our five wins we played some great cricket and had comprehensive wins over a number of the teams. Our two losses we extremely disappointing, both on artificial surfaces. Bowling Takapuna out for 150 and collapsing to be bowled out for 80. In the second bowling North Shore out for 170. In our chase we were 120-2, and still managed to lose. Ironically, we seem to struggle most chasing lower totals and it is something we must rectify if we want to compete in this competition. Our bowling in the limited overs competition was outstanding led by Abdullah Sayed and Bhupinder Singh.

In the T20 competition we won two out of three games and missed out on the quarter finals on net run rate. Again, it was frustrating to not move on to the next round after two solid performances. In our loss to Howick we were beaten by the better side on the day. It is pleasing to see that Auckland Cricket are changing the format to allow more games

against a larger variety of teams. In our group we had both University and Howick Pakuranga, the top three sides this season.

As with previous seasons our main focus was in the two day competition and we gave it a real crack this year. Playing ten games we won four, drew four and lost two. We essentially played a final in our penultimate game against rivals Howick Pakuranga. It was the batting which let us down slightly getting bowled out for 160 on a spin friendly home track. Disappointingly it was the wickets we gave to their seamers which cost us in the end. Another ten runs and it could have been a completely different outlook. Howick went passed our score eight down. Helped mainly by a Dale Phillips’ 70. Dale should have been given out LBW on 0 on the first

day going back to a Bhupinder Singh arm ball. The only doubt in the decision was whether it was crashing into or clipping middle. Dale took his chance and batting extremely positively whilst wickets were tumbling at the other end. Even though we lost first innings we knew we had a real chance for an outright in this game. We hit a quick fire 190 in the second innings before declaring to leave them needing 160 in the final session. Howick finished nine down. An outright victory here would have seen the teams level on points heading into the last round, but it wasn’t meant to be. As it stood we needed Howick to lose and we needed an outright victory. Our outright was a possibility before rain meant no play at all on day two. I am proud of our efforts in this competition and we played some fantastic cricket along the way. I’m sure we can improve on this result next year. Our loss to Howick was our first at home all year and we have really turned the Rec into a place that we are extremely difficult to beat.

Our standout performers this year were Logan Clark with the bat and Bhupinder Singh with the ball. Logan took his game to the next level this year and played some beautiful innings. He developed a real consistency with his batting and became the prized wicket for the opposition. Logan won many games with the bat this year and was often the man not out or taking us close to our totals. With the ball Bhups bowled unbelievable well. He is the best spin bowler if not bowler in Auckland club cricket. He is impossible to score off and then he gets you out. He is still our most consistent performer and he must continue playing if we wish to be successful in the coming seasons.

I would like to say that this season will be my last as captain. As a team for us to go to the next level I think we will need a new voice and there are several potential leaders now in our group and feel comfortable stepping aside. I reflect on where we were as a squad three years ago to where we are now. The strides we have taken forward are significant and I am content with the progress we have made. It was a massive honour captaining the Premier team following in the footsteps of my cricketing idols. It has also been a real challenge managing the strong personalities within our team, this has taught me a lot about myself and have learnt some valuable lessons. My style of leadership hasn’t been popular with everyone, but my honest and critical approach was needed for us to move forward. As a person I was not happy battling to sixth and seventh season after season and did not feel we were representing our proud club the best we could, and this had to change. I may not have approached all these challenges in the right way but at the heart of everything I did the performance of the team was my priority. I’m looking forward to supporting the new captain and enjoying my cricket again next season. I know I have a lot more runs to score and this will be my new focus heading forward. Lastly, I would like to thank Bhups for all his support in particular his knowledge of the game and I have really learnt a lot.

PREMIER WOMEN’S REPORTThere were a few changes to the Premier Women’s squad this season with the return of Tess Hickson after three seasons with Eden Roskill, and Lily Mulivai after having a season off to have her baby girl, R’phael. We also had the addition of three Samoa International players, Papalagi Amosa, Kolotita Lui Masae, and Doris Kalifa join Papatoetoe Cricket Club for the first time, plus returning Samoa Internationals, Lagi Otila Telea, Via Meritiana Andrew, and Matile Uliao.

Throughout the season, the premier women and reserve women trained together twice a week as a wider squad for the first time which was great. It allowed some of our youngsters to train alongside and learn from some of the more experienced senior players. However, on the flipside of that, some of the ‘youngies’ kept the ‘oldies’ on their toes in the nets and everyone pushed each other through some gruelling fitness sessions. Both teams bonded really well and as always, provided plenty of fun and laughter in amongst all the hard work being put in.

Unfortunately, we didn’t do too well in the Pearl Dawson T20 competition as we had very little consistency with both bat and ball which meant we lost 6/8 games – one of which was a bowl off! Two matches earlier on in the season were abandoned due to wet weather so we could only muster a 5th place finish on the table.

However, the 50 over format proved more promising for us in terms of our consistency winning 5/8 games with 2 matches abandoned. We also came painfully close to making the Prichard Cup 50 Over Championship Final. However, a slow over rate in a previous game against Waitakere/Auckland University that cost us the match and more importantly three crucial points came back to haunt us. In the last round of matches we were reliant on that same team (Waitak Uni) beating Takapuna to help us through to the final but it was not to be. Needless to say, we definitely learnt our lesson and will not be letting slow over rates affect our results in future. Sometimes learning the hard way is the only way for the lesson to really sink in!

The third-place play-off against Cornwall was then abandoned with us finishing up in third place yet again. We will definitely be looking to go two steps further than that next season – third time lucky!

Also, a huge thanks to our captain, Lelia Bourne who showed great strength and leadership throughout the season, both on and off the field. I look forward to working alongside you again to make the 2018/19 season our season!

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Simon Poole for all that he’s done for the club and for his patience and support throughout the season. PREMIER MEN RESERVES’ REPORTAssembling in Tauranga on a preseason trip the Premier Reserve squad looked as strong as I had ever seen it. The losses of a couple of key players from the past season had been offset by the addition of a couple of talented youngsters and some experience in the form of George Horsley from the UK and Navi Deol. This promise though failed to deliver on what we expected as a team and most players would be disappointed in the season they had.

The one day season started well with an exciting tie against Takapuna in the first game. We then demolished Suburbs scoring over 300 with new recruits Navi Deol and George Horsley making maiden 50s for Papatoetoe. Losing the next 2 games in low scoring affairs and having a game washed out highlighted the frailties in the batting line-up as we were simply not producing the runs we needed to be competitive. This would be a problem that would hurt the team throughout the season. The next game against Cornwall was a do or die contest and showed what we could produce and the mettle the team had. At 60/4 Karan Anand as new captain led the way and built a partnership with Lance Shaw and with vital contributions from Vijay Soma and Kamal Yadav got us to a competitive score of 257. The game was tight the entire way and with nerves on edge and tensions rising Anand made crucial breakthroughs with the ball himself and astute bowling changes meant we edged them out by 11 runs. This big win allowed us a chance to make the final but we once again failed to deliver with the bat in the final game meaning we ended up 6th in the one day competition.

After the disappointment of the 1 day competition we turned our attention to the 2 dayers where we were sitting in 3rd place after 4 rounds having scored an impressive outright win over Takapuna, with only 1 first innings loss against Parnell. From here though we struggled to gain momentum losing to Cornwall and having a game washed out when we were in a strong position. With 2 rounds to go we still had an opportunity to make the final and with a very rewarding 1st innings victory over Eden Roskill, whom we hadn’t beaten in 3 seasons, it was all to play for in the last game against top of the table Suburbs. Chasing an outright victory we put them in to bat on a good wicket but with limited bowling options, breakthroughs were hard to come by and Suburbs ended up setting us 294. We set about chasing this aggressively and regular contributions kept us in the hunt for most of the game. We ended up falling 12 runs short but again this showed what we were capable of whilst also highlighting the team’s lack of match awareness as no one was able to score past 50. The season ended in a washout giving us a final placing of 5th.

The biggest disappointment of the season was the lack of match winning contributions. This is evidenced by the fact we only scored 1 century courtesy of Aue Parima against a strong Parnell side. Aue had an exceptional season with the bat, owning the swashbuckling way in which he played, which more often than not got us off to great starts. Not one bowler amongst the group took a 5 wicket bag which doesn’t reflect the quality of bowling we had at our disposal. Ben Westerlund was an absolute standout and was our player of the year. He could be relied upon to deliver whatever was needed in the situation presented to him. It was great to see him in full flight bowling his off spin aggressively varying the flight and pace. Ben also was brilliant with the bat showing determination to get us across the line in a number of tight contests.

Jack Shimmin led the seam attack very well especially at various times where he was relied upon to carry most of the fast bowling workload. He was rewarded with most improved player and if he continues to progress will be a future Premier player for many years. I would like to thank Vijay who assisted me in organising and running the team. I was happy to see

Vijay concentrating on his own cricket for a change rather than worrying about everyone else. He bowled magnificently towards the end of the season and was a go to option for new captain Karan Anand. Well done goes to Karan for leading the side in what was a challenging year on the field but an enjoyable one off it as the team culture strengthened the more we played together. Next season bodes well as some emerging talent in Ben Westerlund, Jack Shimmin, Dilpreet Singh and Aue Parima come through. All players need to learn from the past season and work harder so they can achieve above and beyond their potential.

Thank you to all those who have supported the team over the past year and I look forward to working harder and smarter next year and bringing some titles back to the Rec.
