According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the percentage of adults ages 20-74 in the U.S. who are overweight has reached 68.5 percent. American’s are beginning to rethink their food consumption habits—and for good reason.

Similarly, customers have started to demand healthier options in restaurants. According to the National Restaurant Association (NRN), a large majority – 71 percent – of adults are looking to eat healthier when they dine out at restaurants than they did just two years ago.

“We have seen an increasing interest in health and nutrition among consumers over the last several years,” said Joy Dubost, nutrition policy director at the NRA. Due to this uptick in consumers paying greater attention to nutrition, American restaurants are responding and looking to meet customers’ desires.

As health necessities of Americans are changing and as obesity statistics continue to rise, the restaurant industry is beginning to take notice. The industry’s landscape is changing and moving in the direction of better-for-you menu items.

In fact, the NRN reported that the majority of restaurant owners are beginning to add healthier dishes to their menu, and patrons are taking notice. According to a recent report, 86 percent of adults admit that they see healthier options on restaurant menus today than there were two years ago.
