Respected and dear visitors of the exhibition,

The establishment of the diplo-matic relations between the Holy See and the State of Israel 25 years ago has been of a far reaching meaning for Catholics around the world and in Croatia as well. It is an honour for us in the town of Požega to be able to remember

IZVODI IZ GOVORA PAPE FRANJE ZA VRIJEME PROTOKOLARNOGA POSJETA DVOJICI GLAVNIH IZRAELSKIH RABINA U CENTRU HEICHAL SHLOMO PORED VELIKE JERUZALEMSKE SINAGOGE U

PONEDJELJAK 26. SVIBNJA 2014. GODINE.

Zajedno smo organizirali plodonosne susrete i razgovore.

Bit će to milost uskrsnuća

čiji predokus možemo već danas imati.”Papa Franjo

EXCERPTS FROM THE ADDRESS OF POPE FRANCIS DURING THE COURTESY VISIT

TO THE TWO CHIEF RABBIS OF ISRAEL AT HEICHAL SHLOMO CENTER NEXT TO THE

JERUSALEM GREAT SYNAGOGUE (JERUSALEM) ON MONDAY, 26 MAY 2014

As you know, from the time I was Archbishop of Buenos Aires, I have counted many Jews among my friends. Today two friends who are rabbis are here with us. Together we organized rewarding occasions of encounter and dialogue; with them I also experienced significant moments of shar-ing on a spiritual level. This journey of friendship represents one of the fruits of the Second Vatican Council, and particularly of the Declaration Nostra Aetate, which proved so influential and whose fifti-eth anniversary we will celebrate next year. I am convinced that the progress which has been made in recent decades in the relationship between Jews and Catholics has been a genuine gift of God, one of those great works for which we are called to bless his holy name: “Give thanks to the Lord of lords, for his love endures forever; who alone has wrought marvelous works, for his love endures forever” (Ps 135/136:3-4).A gift of God, yes, but one which would not have come about without the efforts of so many courageous and gen-erous people, Jews and Christians alike. Here I would like to mention in particular the growing importance of the di-alogue between the Chief Rabbinate of Israel and the Holy See’s Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews. In-spired by the visit of Pope John Paul II to the Holy Land, this dialogue was inaugurated in 2002 and is already in its twelfth year. We need to do more than simply establish reciprocal and respectful relations on a human level: we are also called, as

Christians and Jews, to reflect deeply on the spiritual signif-icance of the bond existing between us. On the part of Catholics, there is a clear intention to re-flect deeply on the significance of the Jewish roots of our own faith. I trust that, with your help, on the part of Jews too, there will be a continued and even growing interest in knowledge of Christianity, also in this Holy land to which Christians trace their origins. Mutual understanding of our spiritual heritage, appreciation for what we have in common and respect in matters on which we disagree: all these can help to guide us to a closer relation-ship, an intention which we put in God’s hands. Together, we can make a great contribution to the cause of peace; togeth-er, we can firmly oppose every form of anti-Semitism and all other forms of discrimination. May the Lord help us to walk with confidence and strength in his ways. Shalom!

VISIT OF POPE FRANCIS IN ISRAELPOPE FRANCIS AND THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH OF CONSTANTINOPLE BARTHOLOMEW I AT THE STONE OF THE ANOINTING IN THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE

Dear friends,

This year, 2019, marks the 25th anniversary of the establish-ment of the diplomatic relations between the State of Israel and the Holy See, which are based on mutual respect and dialogue, and are closely connected with the development of the relations between the Jewish People and the Catholic Church.

One of the most important milestones in these relations was the visit of Pope Francis to Israel in May 2014, where His Holiness was welcomed and greeted with great enthusiasm by the whole Israeli population, regardless of religious affil-iation.

It was Pope Francis’ first visit outside Italy chosen by His Holiness and the decision to place a wreath on the grave of the founder of Zionism Theodor Herzl was a gesture that carried major symbolical and political value, a further rec-ognition of the bond between the Jewish People and the Land of Israel. This important visit has contributed to the strengthening of the dialogue between Christianity, Juda-ism and Islam.

The late President Peres said: “The State of Israel greets Pope Francis with love and appreciation as a Pope who  builds bridges of peace and brotherhood between all religionss;.This exhibition presents some of the highlights of the Pope’s visit, a visit to be remembered!Enjoy the exhibition!

Dragi prijatelji,
