PRESIDENT’S LETTER

A message from the President

Amy ButlerDear Alumni and Friends of Elyria Catholic High School, It seems like yesterday that we were putting together last year’s edition of the Panther Prowl. How excited I was! Now in my second year as president, I feel even more energized and excited about the direction of our school and the myriad activities we have undertaken — making improvements in our facilities and curriculum, bringing outstanding new members to our faculty and staff, and rolling out our newly formed strategic plan.

I feel truly grateful and privileged to be in this position to serve our alma mater. I can think of no position outside of education where we have the opportunity to form such meaningful relationships with young men and women in developing their faith, their dreams, their hopes and their plans to make a difference in our world. Each day at Elyria Catholic High School, all of us here grow from the experiences we have with our students and parents. We do not take these blessings for granted.

As we planned this year’s Bridge the Gap Appeal, I was reminded of my own personal journey to ECHS. I am one of six children, and my parents did not have the means to send us all to EC. I was faced with a decision: If I chose to attend EC, it meant I needed to earn enough money to pay the tuition. I decided to do whatever it took to follow that path. I babysat, cleaned houses, carried papers for the Chronicle-Telegram, worked at McDonalds and then moved on to work at the Higbee’s department store. I had to attend a public junior high school my freshman year which made me even more determined to attend ECHS. I knew this is where I had to be. How blessed I was then, and how blessed I am now to assist in the planning for our school’s future.

There are so many more stories, just like mine, that reflect our students’ desire for an Elyria Catholic education. More than 60 percent of our families request financial assistance, and it is through private donations, scholarships and personal sacrifice that we are able to answer their need. It is because of the generosity of so many of you who have established scholarships with both endowed and unrestricted funds that we can assist our students and families to fulfill their dreams.

Our founders had a vision in 1948 when they built our school and established our mission. And today we feel even stronger that ECHS must personify educational leadership and faith development. It is in the spirit of our founders that we developed our 2016-2020 Strategic Plan, which we share with you in this special edition of the Panther Prowl.

God bless you for your past support and for joining us in the exciting journey that lies ahead.

PRINCIPAL’S LETTER

A message from the PrincipalSuzanne Lester

Since beginning my role as principal of Elyria Catholic High School, I have found the school year to be a blur! It’s difficult to capture all that happens on our campus in a short amount of time. The first order of business has been to begin to implement the goals and objectives in our strategic plan. One of our key objectives is to develop a learning community that provides appropriate challenges and opportunities for all students, and we are well on our way!

One course that’s generating a buzz on campus is our Foods and Nutrition course. This class was brought back to our course offerings by popular demand. The students have prepared delicious recipes such as fresh salsa using vegetables grown on site, French onion soup, and sugar cookies for our Fall Open House. Mrs. Brenda Klein, the Foods and Nutrition teacher, has a Master’s Degree in Chemistry and has taught the course using STEM-based instruction. It’s always exciting to walk into the Foods room to smell what’s cooking!

Another new addition to Elyria Catholic is our Broadcasting room. Currently, this room is used for video announcements once a week, but we hope to add a broadcasting course to air student-led announcements each school day. This room was recently upgraded through a generous donation from Ridgid. The New Tech tricaster is state-of-the-art equipment that corporations such as Eaton and the NFL use on a regular basis for their productions. With this technology, we are able to operate as a broadcast studio, allowing students to switch cameras in real time. Elyria Catholic has been able to livestream football games and the annual Pride Week Talent Show. With the assistance of the Photoshop program that is being used in our Studio Art class, students can create graphics and slides for DVD menus and covers. This allows our school to integrate content areas and do much of our media and communications “in-house.” Elyria Catholic is also utilizing six new cameras that provide us with the capability to take photos from 150 yards away. When students take pictures at school events, they are able to capture high-resolution photos for editing in Photoshop. Eventually, students will be able to shoot video with these cameras that a future video production club can use for training. We have been sharing the photos on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as well as on Panther Pride Productions. Be sure to follow Elyria Catholic on social media!

Another recent school highlight was receiving the results from the Advanced Placement examinations that some of our students completed in the spring. Elyria Catholic’s Advanced Placement program allows students to pursue college-level content while still in high school. Students have the opportunity to earn college credit by scoring well on the spring exam. Of the students who participated in an AP course at Elyria Catholic, 76% earned a score of 3 or higher on an AP exam. The percentage of students in Ohio earning a score of 3 or higher was 64%, and the percentage of students internationally earning a score of 3 or higher was 60%. The AP Calculus scores were a particular highlight. With eight students completing both the course and the exam, six earned the top score of “5,” and two earned a score of “4.” Congratulations to our faculty and students for their hard work and success!

During the summer, I had the opportunity to meet with each of the teachers and listen to their thoughts and dreams for Elyria Catholic. The teachers’ dedication and love for our students was extremely evident in these conversations. I had always known that there was something very special about Elyria Catholic High School. However, it wasn’t until the first day of school, when I witnessed the students’ involvement at Mass, that I fell in love with the Elyria Catholic community. I often spread the news that our students are awesome, and they continue to amaze me! It is heartwarming to see our faculty, staff, and students interact on a daily basis. I am both humbled and proud to be a part of such a fine community.

Hail, Elyria Catholic High!

In Christ’s service,

Suzanne Lester

On October 7, 2016, Rev. Robert came and spoke to the entire student body about his experiences that were similar to Ishmael. Listening to Rev. Robert speak was very enlightening. Hearing about all that he went through during this time of war was just heartbreaking. Innocent little kids going to fight for something that they didn’t even know existed, and it just becoming a part of their life is something that can never be forgotten. When he read the book, it reminded him about what it was like for him, and he wanted to share his story too. Rev. Robert encountered the rebels three separate times, and was never chosen. He decided in 1996 that he needed to go to high school to learn how to read and write, so he left his family and went to school.

Over the summer every Elyria Catholic student and faculty member was required to read A Long Way Gone, by Ishmael Beah. Throughout the beginning of the school year, all teachers have been talking to the students about the book.

THE GROTTO PROJECT BY EMMA FUCHS ’17

Anyone who walks through the main entrance of Elyria Catholic passes by the ever-watching Mary statue that rests in the partition between the two main sets of doors. With her hands folded in prayer, she stands as a solemn and prayerful guardian of the entire Elyria Catholic community, watching over guests and members alike.

However through the years she came to look a bit neglected and dull. It seems only fitting that during this time whexn Elyria Catholic itself is undergoing many updates and revitalization, the same treatment be done for Mary.

Will Price, an Elyria Catholic senior, thought the same thing when he chose to spruce up Mary and the area surrounding her for his project to earn the Eagle Scout Award. It is called the Grotto Project and through this, Will has repainted the brick behind Mary, as well as Mary herself. He also replaced some of the shrubbery surrounding her, and did an all around tidying up of the area. It was certainly no easy feat, and no detail was overlooked in the execution of this project.

Anyone passing outside the school can see that it was in fact a great place to start. The Grotto Project is now completed and Mary and the plants encompassing her have a new and fresh look; truly a small scale glance at the new freshness and life being breathed into the entire school and community.

When Rev. Robert finished his talk about when he was little, he told us that for the last 10 years, the country has been a little bit more peaceful, and they are moving in a positive direction. He told us “The first thing you can do for us is to pray for us.” The moral of Rev. Robert’s story was that God is always there for us and things are going to happen in a way that you don’t want them to happen, but there is no problem too big for a person to handle. We are stronger than what the world portrays us, and we can do that with having open hearts and helping make everyone feel safe. The Elyria Catholic community will be praying for Rev. Robert and for all the children in the world who are still going through what he went through.

ON THE EC STAGE

THE 2015-2016 ACADEMIC TEAMBY BRITTANY BUCCI ’17

Last year was a spectacular year for the school. There were quite a few changes going on, one of the changes being the absolute dominance that the 2015-2016 Academic Team had over their conference. At the end of the school year, the team graduated four seniors: Mitchell Carson, Jhoj Cana, Ryan Turner and Jeremy Basinski. These four outstanding scholars, with the help of their coach Madeleine Heinrich and support of their fellow varsity and junior varsity teammates, made it further than any team has made it before in the history of the school: the varsity team qualified

for the statewide tournament. It was an extremely rough road to the state match. The team had to battle through some very tough teams, such as Oberlin High School, and Mitchell Carson’s favorite team, Vermilion High School. Elyria Catholic secured their ticket to the sectional finals a few weeks before the end of the regular season. At the sectional finals, the team blew over the competition with their extensive knowledge across all topics, although the whole team did seem to dislike their fine arts. Though the outcome of the state competition was not as favorable, the season ended on a high note. Making it to Columbus for the state competition marked the start of a new era for the academic team. It started an era of success not only for the team itself, but also brought the school community closer. Everyone in the school was rooting for the team and wishing them the best of luck as they traveled to Columbus. This year Michael Brown will be taking over as coach of the team, but the legacy of the 2015-2016 varsity academic team will live on for years to come.

“I got to meet new friends and I love to be involved with this awesome new group of people,” says Beth Parkey ’19 recalling this show as her first Elyria Catholic theatre experience.

Ask any student who has done a show with the EC drama club. They will call it one of their “Favorite Things” about their high school experience. The enthusiasm radiated from director Mr. Kevin Juguilon from the very start of this production. Set in pre World War II Austria, this classic musical follows postulant nun Maria who is sent to take care of the seven children of a widower captain.

The cast and crew alike donated up to eight hours a school night at maximum to create their interpretation of this piece of art, ready to be put on display in front of the entire community. Rehearsal time for the actors was spent blocking stage directions, clarifying vocal diction, and sharpening dance choreography. The crew was just as busy coordinating their student led lighting, sound, and technical crews behind the scenes. This was not an easy production to

ON THE EC STAGE

produce, yet the results were impressive. The thespians took life-changing skills away from the experience of this production. From balancing academics with a busy after school schedule to leadership by example, the theatre program is full of well-rounded individuals. Natalie Fischer ’17 portrayed the Mother Abbess. She is a great example of multitasking. “Honestly, I spend weeks doing both the musical and the film club movie.” says Natalie. These students understand the importance of the arts and have some plan to explore options in this field in the future.

This year, Elyria Catholic was invited to have their musical participate in the inaugural Dazzle Awards run by Playhouse Square in downtown Cleveland. In this educational competition, the participating schools in Northeast Ohio have their musicals judged by professionals. Actors and actresses are able to participate in workshops to train with professionals themselves. One of the workshops sent four EC girls to learn a dance combination with a swing coach from the touring cast of Matilda the Musical.

Megan McAffery ’19 was a participant in both the dance workshop and the opening number of the Dazzle Awards at the Connor Palace. She calls her lucky chance a “super fun and life-changing experience.” Meg excitedly says, “I made so many friends and learned a lot!” The cast of The Sound of Music was very grateful for this opportunity. The leads even had the chance to compete for the two spots for this reign’s National High School Theatre Award nomination. This award show, also known as The Jimmy Awards, brings high school performers together each year in New York City. The Elyria Catholic Drama Club will continue to participate in the annual Dazzle Awards each spring.

The Sound of Music is the perfect story to share with the EC circle, exemplifying Catholic tradition and the importance of family, no matter how unique their situation may be. For high school students especially, a common theme in this story is following God’s plan. God calls individuals for a vocation and sometimes stepping out of their comfort zone, much like main character Maria, is the best way to hear that calling no matter what it may be. The overwhelming support of this production from the community is highly appreciated and students cannot wait to showcase their musical talents once again in the spring.

The Hills Are AliveA singing Sister Superior and seven dancing children visited the school on the corner of Gulf and Poplar. The entire theatre department was proud to present The Sound of Music in spring of 2016.

OUR MISSION

8 Elyria Catholic High School Magazine

First-time visitors to Elyria Catholic High School may be impressed with the school’s appearance. With its first phase built in 1948, the bright, well-kept, updated and expanded building contains the best of both worlds, simultaneously evoking tradition and the advantages of a modern learning environment.

But walking through the hallways hardly provides a full sense of the school. To accurately get that picture, you’d need to additionally visit Blessing House in Lorain, which serves as a temporary safe home for children; the Children’s Developmental Center in Amherst, where care and instruction are provided for children with

special needs; Wesleyan Village in Elyria, a senior living community; Haven Center, a homeless shelter in Lorain; or countless other facilities where social-service needs are met.

To really see Elyria Catholic, you’d also need to attend a march, show up at City Hall, or travel to the latest community where a disaster has struck.

On any given day after school, on weekends and during vacations, those are likely places where you will find Elyria Catholic students carrying out the values-based lessons they have learned in the classroom. Lorain County’s only Catholic high school, Elyria

Catholic defines success not only in terms of academic excellence – nearly all students go on to higher education – but also by the leadership roles that graduates take in promoting community and society improvement.

Amy Butler, Class of 1980, who now serves as the school’s president, puts it simply: “Eventually, we want our students to change the world.”

A tall order, but the school’s record of distinguished alums lends credence to the goal. In Elyria and elsewhere in Lorain County, Elyria Catholic graduates hold numerous leadership positions in government. The school also claims educators, missionaries, corporate and philanthropic leaders, medical professionals and others devoted to the school’s mission to educate students “to act as caring, just and responsible citizens of the world.”

The large majority of the school’s 420 students are Catholic, and faith is clearly the underpinning of its mission. But the

school’s teachers and administrators believe that religion should not merely be a fourth R in the litany of Reading, ’Riting and ’Rithmetic. “Religion solely for the sake of knowledge is of very little value,” declares Deacon Patrick Humphrey, Class of 1971, who chairs the school’s Department of Theology. “It must be lived. It must be embraced.”

Among those who have embraced the mission are Scott and Rebecca Serazin, classmates in the Class of 1970, and their three children, Rachel (Karnani) ’98, Andrew ’99 and Nathan ’04. Scott, Elyria’s law director, and Rebecca (Becky), a PhD who was named Ohio’s school psychologist of the year in 2013, have carried out the mandate of public service they learned at Elyria Catholic and have set the example for their children to do the same.

“We made the choice to send them to Elyria Catholic because of the spirit that begins in the classroom,” says Becky.

“You meet a lot of people in the work I do,” says Scott. “I’ve had a lot of employees and colleagues, and there is just something about an Elyria Catholic grad. The barriers come down faster, the trust is there and you seem to click from the start.”

Each of the couple’s children has carried the tradition of service into professional life.

“Each in their own way share a world view,” says Becky.

Rachel – who had the distinction of being elected class president, valedictorian, most athletic and homecoming queen at Elyria Catholic – brings those values to her work in her international travels as marketing director for a major national and international accounting preparation firm. Andrew, a Rhodes Scholar, formerly was a senior program officer for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and now serves as the president of the Templeton World Charities Foundation headquartered in the Bahamas. Nathan is a pediatrician who has spent time in Malawi treating children with AIDS. He now works with children with cancer.

“The values of persistence, hard work and dedication - the notion that new ways can always be learned, optimized and improved – started with my parents and was reinforced by EC,” Rachel says.

“I think it is fair to say that values learned in high school can be multigenerational,” Scott says.

“What really brings us joy is to see how our children reach out to help children now,” Becky says. “There is no greater joy than seeing that they ‘get’ it. And a lot of that comes from the sense of family at Elyria Catholic. Family is more than blood. It is city, community, world.”

President Amy Butler believes that is the heart of an Elyria Catholic education.

“Our job is to introduce students to the many opportunities to serve - locally, in the state, nationally and throughout the world - and to develop a passion to do something,” she says. “Our world is thirsty for that.”

After graduating from Elyria Catholic in 1975, Father Joe Callahan received a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry in 1979. He spent two years working for Glidden Paint in Strongsville, but decided he needed to try the seminary because he felt that his gifts were more with people than with the labs. He was ordained in 1986.

After serving five years at St. Jude’s in Elyria after ordination, Callahan answered the call to be a missionary in El Salvador. What should have been a six year stint lasted sixteen years. “I really loved it,” he recalled. “It was a privilege to serve the poor and learn from the poor, to go from a culture of abundance to a culture of poverty.”

Elyria Catholic influenced Callahan in his dealings with people, and taught him to be grateful and to take advantage of opportunities. “I appreciated the spirit of community that the school nurtured.” He also credits Father Guitano with giving him spiritual advice and being a big influence on him.

Currently Father Callahan is the pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Cleveland, a

multicultural parish that is 70% Hispanic. The parish was given a second chance when the bishop restructured the diocese, and is currently growing. “My missionary work prepared me for ministry here; I understand Hispanic immigration from both sides.”

Callahan knows what a blessing ministry is. As he said, “I am grateful each day.”

“Engineers Without Borders goes to third world communities, finds a need, and designs a system to meet that need. In Bolivia, they needed clean water. By the time we left, the citizens had clean water and it was a completely life-changing event for me,” said Molnar.

Molnar knows her time at Elyria Catholic set her on this path to science and service. “When I took Chem with Miss Bernat, I got really interested in nuclear engineering. She just made you really excited about learning.” Molnar carries that excitement today with a dual major and an expected graduation date of December 2017.

She also appreciates the work ethic gleaned while at EC. “EC really prepared me for college, to work hard, have determination, and get things done.”

In addition to three trips to Bolivia, Molnar has supplemented her college work with internships in space exploration and nuclear energy. This has led her to narrow her interests to the field of medical research.

As Molnar said, “I want to do more than just go to school. I don’t want to just make money, but I also want to use my ability to help people.” Although keeping her options open, Molnar can see herself going to graduate school for nuclear medical research. She is interested in cancer research, finding a cure that is more localized than current methods.

The spark of science and service will certainly continue to burn for Molnar as she furthers her education in nuclear science, and the world will benefit from her dreams.

For Makayla Molnar ’13, a trip to Taca Chia, Bolivia as a college freshman with the group Engineers Without Borders solidified her desire to help people. Currently a senior at Missouri University of Science and Technology with a dual major of Nuclear Engineering and Applied Mathematics, Molnar described her experiences in Bolivia.

After graduating from Elyria Catholic in 1997 Conroy went to The Ohio State University to study Biochemistry and Zoology. Little did he know he would end up with a Master´s Degree (2005) and his PhD in Evolution Ecology and Organismal Biology in 2007.

He gained experience as an undergraduate learning about fish production in the Division of Wildlife’s hatchery ponds, and did his doctoral dissertation on Lake Erie.

Now his job as a Fisheries Biologist in the State of Ohio-Division of Wildlife takes him to more than 170 reservoirs, lakes and ponds, thousands of miles of streams and rivers, and 451 miles of the Ohio River in a constant quest to study the life span of fish and provide more healthy fish for Ohio’s 1.3 million anglers.

Conroy maintains a fisheries database, coordinates the standardized assessment programs, and completes other research projects. “We do research and management to provide opportunities to anglers in all inland rivers, streams and reservoirs in Ohio,” said Conroy.

Conroy credits EC with giving him the brick and mortar foundation for succeeding. “EC taught me about study skills, effort and paying attention. I am trying to instill in my daughters the same principles. You have to be able to outwork everyone.”

Because of his work ethic, Conroy recently received the STEM Exemplar award in Ohio, part of the Believe in Ohio program. Winners need to attend Ohio schools and show outstanding work in a STEM-related field.

Conroy lives in the Columbus area with his wife, Jen, also an EC graduate, and his three daughters.

The diversity of his job offers something new every day, and he is definitely making a positive impact for Ohio’s inland fishing enthusiasts.

Tagging catfish is not a typical way to spend a day at work, but for Joe Conroy it is business as usual.

After graduating from Elyria Catholic in 2010, Goetz majored in film production at Bowling Green with a minor in Environmental Science.

Currently employed as a videographer, photographer and educator at the Toledo Zoo, Goetz has succeeded in enjoying his passion while making a living. Along the way, he has traveled to Aruba, Alaska, Trinidad, and Costa Rica, doing what he loves. In addition to his work at the zoo, he freelances by selling stock footage of wildlife to various companies and creating short films for film festivals.

Goetz´s passion for filmmaking was fueled at EC. “EC was a great community of people who inspired me to make films. If I didn’t have the support of friends and teachers there, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” he said.

Goetz credits Spanish teachers Mrs. Bradesca-Schock and Mrs. Sheila Soptelean for making him a more confident traveler. “It is

nice to have another language up my sleeve. I have no fear.”

Goetz and his associate Justin Grubb recently won the NatGeo Wild to Inspire contest for a short documentary they created. The prize is a trip to Africa, and the two will begin their odyssey in South Africa in December. They will continue on from there to shoot Great Whites in Capetown and explore the wilds of Namibia. As Goetz says, “We´ll stay in Africa until our money runs out and our families want us back.”

From his days in the EC hallways to the wilds of the African bush, Goetz constantly has a camera in his hand. He is working on building a full-time film career and pitching travel documentary ideas to whomever will listen. In the meantime, he explains, “It´s all fun. That’s why I do it.”

Whether lying down in a cemetery with his camera waiting for coyotes to photograph or filming Tasmanian devils in the south of Australia, Alex Goetz ’10 has turned his passion for filmmaking into a blossoming career.

2016-2020 Strategic Plan 13

Pope Francis tells us: “The mission of schools is to develop a sense of truth, of what is good and beautiful.”

We take our Holy Father’s admonition to heart. At Elyria Catholic, our mission emphasizes a commitment to excellence and compassion. Through worship, academics, extracurricular activities and service, the Elyria Catholic community educates students to use vision and courage to act as caring, just and responsible citizens of the world.

As we designed our 2016-2020 Strategic Plan, we recognized that first and foremost we must provide our students with the resources they need to succeed in this quest. We also recognized that our sustainability depends on us working together as a united community, encouraging and supporting one another spiritually, emotionally and financially.

Grounded in our commitment to expand our community even as we strengthen it, our Strategic Plan calls for us to be both ambitious and forward-thinking in our efforts to continue God’s work as our founders envisioned in 1948.

In these things, as in all that we do, our focus is on ensuring that Elyria Catholic High School will fulfill its mission for generations to come, fostering loyalty that never dies.

Chemistry Classroom and the Class of 1964Through their vision and donations, Elyria Catholic students will have a — learning experience in the newly planned chemistry classroom!

The layout of the room will have an open room concept with the lecture area and lab in the same room allowing for the students and teacher to have more space for collaboration, hands on experience and all the safety features necessary in this 21st Century layout. President, Amy Butler stated, “There is a lot of excitement surrounding this project, and we see it as a first step to a broader vision involving other aspects, not just science, which is part of our Strategic Plan.”

CHICAGO BAND TRIP Elyria Catholic marching band is always on the move, but this past spring they took their move more seriously as they rolled west to Chicago for a music clinic at Vandercook College of Music. Band director John Royski said, “It was great that the students got to rehearse at the college.”

Along with the music clinic, students enjoyed sight-seeing at the John Hancock Building, Shedd Aquarium, Lincoln Park Zoo, Museum of Science and Industry, and the live play Matilda.

Natalie Fisher’s love of theater overtook her in Chicago. “I loved watching Matilda. “It was great to see it live. The dancing was amazing,” she said.

The students also enjoyed some shopping along Michigan Avenue. Brittany Bucci said, “Tiffany’s was the coolest place I have ever seen in my life!”

Flag Corps Moderator and chaperone Ms. Anne Bernat said, “It was a wonderful trip! I really enjoyed seeing Matilda and exploring the Museum of Science and Industry (no surprise there!). The band clinic was a great experience, but I would say the main benefit of the trip was community building.”

Ivelysse Gracia enjoyed the trip as a freshman, and had fun with the upperclassmen. “It was nice because they had the experience to lead and guide you.”

Students agreed that the Bean was a highlight of the trip, The Cloud Gate Sculpture is in Millenium Park and its highly reflective material shows off the Chicago skyline. Students enjoyed seeing their own reflection in it as well.

The trip helped to build community within the band, which in turn builds harmony in their music.

CLASS OF 1955 BRINGS “LIGHT” TO THE PANTHER PAVILIONThrough a generous donation from the Class of 1955 the Panther Pavilion will have electricity for lighting and outlet access! The pavilion is enjoyed by many throughout the year hosting Alumni reunions and events, students’ events, CYO athletes and parent gatherings! We are grateful to the Class of 1955 for this addition to the pavilion!

Lou Rotunda Award Presented to Jake Kuchta ’16 Jake Kuchta ’16 was the recipient of the 2016 Lou Rotunda Award, presented annually to a graduating senior male athlete in good academic standing who works to his full potential. The young man is expected to be involved in extracurriculars beyond athletics and involved in his church/community.

Fans watched Kuchta as a three-year letter winner and captain in both basketball and football and he ran track the spring of his senior year.

He started every varsity basketball game over his three seasons and is the school’s all-time leader in made three-pointers. Lorain County recognized him as its 2015-16 Division III Basketball Player of the Year and he won a wide array of awards at the conference and district levels as well. After his senior season, he was selected to play in Ohio’s North-South Game and won the prestigious three-point contest.

On the gridiron, he quarterbacked the Panthers for two seasons and was an all-conference performer in both the West Shore and Great Lakes conferences in addition to his status as an all-district performer.

Four times in his athletic career — twice in both basketball and football — he earned all-state accolades.

Baseball Team Advances to Elite EightThe varsity baseball team finished the 2016 season with a 24-7 record and advanced all the way to the Division III Massillon regional final. EC came one win shy of advancing to the Final Four for the first time since 2002.

Under the watch of head coach Bruce Lisicky, EC went a perfect 12-for-12 in Great Lakes Conference play to capture the conference title. Leighton Banjoff ’19 was named the conference’s Position Player of the Year and Lisicky was tabbed the GLC Coach of the Year.

Andrew Abrahamowicz ’17, a University of Nebraska commit, and Sean Darmafall ’16 were both named to the Prep Baseball Report’s Division III All-Ohio first team and third baseman Ryan Strittmather ’18 earned D-III honorable mention status from PBR.

Girls Basketball Team Reaches Regional FinalThe Elyria Catholic girls basketball team lost its first-ever Great Lakes Conference game and responded by winning each of the next 11 to win the inaugural Great Lakes Conference championship. The Panthers didn’t stop there and went on to win the district championship before falling to Hathaway Brown in the Elite Eight.

Head coach Eric Rothgery ’80 was named the GLC Coach of the Year and his point guard Riley Schill ’16 was named the conference Player of the Year.

Josie Carandang ’16 and Nora Hopkins ’17 joined Schill on the nine-player first team.

Sam Filiaggi ’17 and Megan Scheibelhut ’18 earned second team all-conference honors while Julia Scarpelli ’16 and Regan Schill ’19 were awarded honorable mention status.

Stan Bleich ’17

Takes Third in The State at 132 PoundsStan Bleich took third in the 132-pound bracket at the OHSAA Division III Individual Wrestling Tournament that was held at The Ohio State University’s Jerome Schottenstein Center in early March.

Last year, Bleich placed sixth at 126 pounds so this year’s finish showed a clear improvement.

He opened the state tournament with a 9-3 win over Zane Strubler from Miami East and he beat Dylan Mansor from Oak Harbor in a thrilling match the following morning to advance to the semifinals. Against Mansor, Bleich trailed 5-4 with 33 seconds left in the third but finished strong to advance.

Milan Edison’s Brady Barnett bested Bleich 3-0 in the semifinals, but he came back the next morning to beat Galion Northmor’s Conan Becker by a 15-3 count and Ada’s Chase Sumber in the third place match, 5-2.

Teddy Achladis ’16 Shines at State Track and Field MeetTeddy Achladis ’16 placed second in the discus throw and fourth in the shot put at the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II Track and Field Championships which were held in Columbus in early June.

Achladis threw the shot 55' 10.5" to place fourth. His best throw, which was more than nine inches longer than any of his other five attempts, came in the sixth and final round.

For the sake of comparison, Achladis placed eighth in the region last year in the shot put and he came back to place second at this year’s Lexington regional meet behind only the eventual state champion Mat French from Hebron Lakewood.

Achladis tossed the discus 176' 10". He was one of two throwers in the competition to pass the 170-foot mark.

State champion Sam Meece, a junior from Napoleon High School, was measured at 191' 4".

The 2016 state meet capped a terrific career for Achladis. In 2015, he took third in the discus (171' 4") and in 2014, Achladis was the only area Division II thrower to place at state when he took seventh in the discus (158' 7").

The Outstanding Female Athlete Award, which is graciously sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Ron Gilgenbach ’52, was won by Riley Schill ’16.

Academically, she ranked fourth in the 2016 senior class and carried a 4.35 grade point average while taking many Advanced Placement courses.

Outside of athletics, she was elected as a leader in student senate and served as a student ambassador at EC. She was a part of Cultural Conspiracy Club and went on the alternative spring break where she performed service work for those who need it the most. She was involved with Christmas on Campus and pairing all this with her athletic accolades and academic performance, she was an easy choice to be inducted into the National Honor Society.

In the winter of 2015-16, she led the basketball team to a school record 24 wins and a deep run in the Division II tournament that

ended one game shy of the Final Four. Her basketball teams won the West Shore Conference title after her junior year and the inaugural Great Lakes Conference championship this past season. She was the Player of the Year in both conferences.

After her senior season, in which she became the third player in program history to surpass the 1,000-point milestone, she was named Miss Basketball in Lorain County, presented annually to the top senior in the county. She was the first player from Elyria Catholic to earn that award.

Stow OH. Gary and Amy met at Akron Children’s Hospital, where they both work. It was a beautiful spring day, and although her mom, Donna Grisa, who passed away in 2014, and was a dedicated teacher at Elyria Catholic, was not physically there, her spirit was with them the whole day. In fact, she wore her mother’s wedding dress for her special day, and felt like Donna was giving her a big hug throughout the entire wedding!

Betty Blair, [email protected] (440-458-5603)Class of 1956The 1956 class of Elyria Catholic High School celebrated their 60th anniversary of graduation, welcoming former classmates from California, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin and various parts of Ohio, on Friday and Saturday, July 29 and 30.

A get-together was hosted by Jim and Bobbie Lescher Bruder at their home in Avon.

On Saturday, July 30th, the celebration started with the 4:30 Mass at St. Mary’s in Elyria, followed by dinner in the Weigand Room.

Joan Van Wormer offered piano selections, as she did at the 55th Reunion, accompanied by Bob Kolopus, class of 1954.

Notable firsts by this Class of 1956:• a hard-covered yearbook including

individual class pictures of each of the four classes.

• first to hold “Friendship Day” which continues as a tradition today.

• first class to have green-colored class rings, Shamrock Spinel.

• first class to have six women enter religious life as nuns.

And perhaps our most notable first, the establishment of the Dr. James L. Kolopus Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc. formed in 1971 after the untimely death of Jim Kolopus, Student Council President. This is Elyria Catholic’s oldest existing scholarship. At our 50th anniversary, arrangements were made with the School’s Endowment Foundation to have the Kolopus Scholarship Fund become a part of the Endowment. During our 45 years of existence, we have awarded some 57 Scholarships totaling $41,500.

Our Class Motto: “A noble deed is a step toward God.” — Holland — 35 of our 90 graduates have, indeed, taken that final step towards their Creator. May they rest in Eternal Peace.

Elyria Catholic is exploring the idea of hosting a reunion for our alumni and friends in the Florida area. In order to gauge the interest level, we are asking for your help! The reunion would be held in the winter of 2017 and school President, Amy Butler ’80, and Director of Alumni Relations, Kelsie Stites, would be on hand to give an update on the school. If you are interested in attending a Florida reunion event, please contact Dianne Goold ’57 at: [email protected] or (239) 821-8635.
