Transform data into actionable information. Accurate and timely information is a cornerstone of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of public health systems, but it can be challenging to put actionable information into the right hands, when and where it’s needed.

IBM’s Public Health Solution for Disease Surveillance and Management (SDSM) provides a single, integrated end-to-end web-based application that helps health professionals:

• Assist in identifying and managing communicable disease contacts and cases in a clinical setting, and support public health to contain communicable disease spread and reduce risk to the public

• Support surveillance, investigation, monitoring, management, analysis and reporting of communicable disease outbreaks

• Manage immunization schedules, determine eligibility, and track adverse events, exemptions and contraindications

• Manage vaccine inventory

• Notify public health professionals so information about critical events and emergencies can be shared quickly

• Manage public health work processes

Solution benefits include: Improved immunization coverage to support management of

communicable diseases in the population

Improved reporting of adverse events following immunization

Earlier detection of communicable disease outbreaks

Improved management of cases and contacts

Improved capacity to respond to communicable diseases through more efficient use of public health resources

Improved preventative care for new mothers – for babies from birth through early childhood

Reduced vaccine spoilage costs

Improved management and reporting reduces the risk of economic impacts resulting from trade and travel advisories

Improved productivity and effectiveness though central work records

Systems integration The application was designed to be highly interoperable and can easily integrate with other healthcare systems including client and provider registries, lab information repositories, booking systems, financial systems, etc.

Cloud Computing Discover the benefits of Cloud Computing with IBM. Organizations need to do more with less, and that’s what Cloud is all about. It’s on-demand, always available, and requires almost no setup or capital expense.

• Extensive supply chain management capabilities for vaccines and related materials

• Family health management component monitors newborn and early childhood preventative outcomes and provides care planning

• Role-based security that supports single sign-on within a health delivery organization's infrastructure

• Extensive platform of shared services to manage clinical notes, documents, providers, organizations and service delivery locations

Not a one size fits all solution. Out of the box, the Public Health SDSM is an easy-to-use solution that can be customized to satisfy a public health agency’s specific processes and data requirements. The solution can be seamlessly deployed as an integrated suite of modules, or by specific module(s). As a public health agency’s needs evolve, additional modules already available in the application suite can be deployed. Highly configurable. The solution offers a high degree of configuration options and multilingual support. A key application component is the availability of user defined forms, which allows users to collect and report on unique information with configurable data collection forms. Powerful ad hoc reporting. Authorized users can create ad hoc reports and extract data using SAP Business Object Universes within the application. The SAP Business Objects tool is an enterprise strength query and reporting application that helps users ask questions about application data and create reports in an easy to use “drag and drop” manner.

Unlock information silos. To support more efficient and informed decision making, the Public Health SDSM allows for real-time interoperability with other third-party systems, including (but not limited to):

• Client and provider registries • Lab systems • Electronic health records • Booking systems • Financial systems • Immunization registries • State systems

The application supports the latest industry data exchange standards such as HL7 LOINC, SNOMED and custom XML interfaces. A global solution. Initially designed and developed for implementation and use within provincial and territorial jurisdictions across Canada, the IBM Public Health SDSM application is now available globally.
