Panic Room
Establishing shot of robbers shows stair case in background- the setting is inside a house.
Camerawork
Medium shot and close-up of protagonists face shows shocked
facial expression.
Over-the-shoulder-shot:
Shows protagonist running up stairs then camera tilts down and uses a high angle long shot to show antagonists chasing her- puts it in perspective and raises the tension.
EditingCross-Cutting: The frequent transitions between scenes raises the tension and suggests that something is ominous. It is used here to demonstrate her moment of realization that she is in danger.
Eye-line match:Shows the protagonists shocked expression and then cuts to the camera screen as to demonstrate this is what she is shocked at- the audience is put in her situation.
Mise-en-sceneClose-up of a basketball suggests that the house-owners likely have children; creates a sense of vulnerability and innocence.
We can also see that the robbers are wearing masks- their intentions are clearly not good- heightens the resentment the audience feels towards them as they appear more antagonistic.
Over-the-shoulder-shot: Shows the antagonists ascending to the protagonists level- they are in low level lighting suggesting that they are the villains.
Sound Track• Begins with slow non-diegetic soundtrack.
• Floorboards creak loudly raises the tension of the clip- isn’t much chance that the antagonists will go undetected.
• As soon as antagonists are shown the soundtrack changes- turns a lot deeper and more menacing.
• Breathing becomes noticeable; shows moment of realization causes her to go into a state of shock. We anticipate her next move.
• Guy shouts: ‘You stay here, nobody gets past’, he is clearly in charge, and as the other antagonist says nothing he obviously feels quite intimidated.
