Roadside temples impede laying ofstorm water drain in K. K. NagarBy Our Staff Reporter

Chennai Corporation has taken up the work of laying a highercapacity storm water drain along Ashok Pillar Main Road, K. K. Nagar.

But completing the work could become a challenge due to thepresence of two roadside temples opposite ESIC Hospital as the drainhas to pass under these temples.

While one temple has already permitted the drain to be built in frontof the entrance, engineers are yet to plan for the other temple.

Due to the location of the other temple, the drain will have to be laidbeneath the main sanctum sanctorum.

The work is being expedited ahead of the onset of the northeastmonsoon.

In response to a complaint, Corporation has replied that the templehas been in existence for more than 20 years and that it is a ‘religiousand sensitive issue’.

Added to this problem, on the western end of the road, there is a publictoilet on the roadside and a row of shops forcing the Corporationofficials to deviate and build the drain in the carriageway, therebyreducing the space for motorists.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORAppeal to cut leaning tree on Baroda 2nd Lane

Sir, There is a tree which is leaningprecariously in front of GRN Apartments inBaroda 2nd Lane, West Mambalam, which isadjacent to the apartment complex I live in.

I made an online complaint to ChennaiCorporation on Oct. 6.

The next day two Corporation officialsinspected the tree and said that they havepowers only to cut and remove the branches, and special approval from higher officials isneeded to cut the tree. But, after that there hasbeen no further inspection.

With monsoon approaching, there is a highrisk of the tree falling down and causinguntoward incidents.

I appeal to Chennai Corporation forimmediate action to cut and remove theprecariously leaning tree. N. Mohan, MeerajApartments, 3/7, Baroda 2nd Lane, WestMambalam, Ph: 94449 28181

Kanchi Periyavaa spends 15 daysin Ayodhya Mandapam

Sir, His Holiness Kanchi Sankaracharyastayed in Ayodhya Mandapam (WestMambalam) from Sept. 14 to 28 on the requestof the governing committee and devotees.

The whole area of the Mandapam wasredesigned to suit the requirements of the Muttofficials. Further, the Mithilapuri KalyanaMandapam was maintained according to therequirements of the Acharya who stayed there.

During the Pontiff’s stay, around 125 rishisfrom Kasi, Kedarnath and other holy placesvisited Chennai for three days to meet theSankaracharya. The M utt took care of theirstay, food and logistics. The whole of WestMambalam wore a festive look during thosefifteen days with more than 1000 personsgetting the blessings of His Holiness dailyfollowed by Annadaanam for thousands.

Our kudos to everyone including the manyvolunteers who worked tirelessly to make theSankaracharya’s stay memorable to alldevotees. S. Viswanathan and A. P.Sridharan (Sahasranaama PaarayanamGroup, Ayodhya Mandapam, West Mam-balam).

Property tax on common area charged on commercial basisSir, In a number of cases including mine, the revenue officials of Chennai Corporation have

interpreted the common area of apartment complexes as commercial space and have, accordingly, charged a very high rate of property tax during the revision done last year.

This can mean a two-fold or three-fold increase in property tax.My flat on Bazullah Road, T. Nagar has carpet area of 1020 sq.ft, with additional common

area of 300 sq.ft. The property tax was abnormally revised from Rs. 1,440 to Rs. 6,300 as thetax on the common area was calculated on commercial basis and was revised by more than300%. I filed an appeal against the revision 6 months back, which is pending with the revenueofficials. I appeal to all property owners, especially those living in flats, to recheck the basisof the revision of property tax, and go in appeal in case it is abnormal. R. Swamikannu.Bazullah Road, T. Nagar

Sewage let into storm water drainsSir, Private tankers which collect sewage

from houses that do not have Corporationsewage connection, let it illegally into stormwater drains at night.

The patrol police also do not take any actionagainst this illegal activity.

This is not only a major health hazard, butalso clogs the storm water drains, defeatingtheir very purpose.

During heavy rains, the sewage stagnant inthe drains gets mixed with rain water andaccumulates on the road, instead of flowinginto them.

This was evident during the floods in Dec.2015 when sewage water entered many houses.

The Corporation officials should takeimmediate action against this activity and goon a war footing to clean and desilt all stormwater drains to ensure free flow of rain waterto prevent stagnation.

It will also improve ground water level asin a number of streets rain waterharvesting has been implemented within thesedrains. N. Vijayaraghavan, 59/1,Muthalamman Koil Street, WestMambalam, Ph: 99626 64766

Street nameboards need a makeoverSir, Most of the street nameboards in the neighbourhood are either defaced or have faded. When the nameboards made with metal sheets with blue stickers with white lettering were

fixed a few years back, they looked nice. But with time and non-maintenance, the stickers havepeeled off and the boards are defaced by posters and advertisement banners.

The Corporation can utilize modern technology to fix nameboards that can last longer orcannot be misused, It can even fix digital nameboards under its Smart City project. P. K.Subramanian, Aishwarya Apartments, Gandhi Street, T. Nagar, Ph:98402 93321

Shoppers put T. Nagar in a state of logjamWith less than a fortnight to go for Deepavali, Sunday, Oct. 13 saw thousands of shoppers

descending on the various textile and jewellery showrooms in T. Nagar.South Usman Road and Ranganathan Street were most congested; with the residents in

the vicinity put to hardship due to blocking of the roads, forcing them to snake their way pastmultitudes of vehicles to reach their homes. Shoppers parked their vehicles along residentialstreets for hours, blocking access to residents.

The congestion on South Usman Road and in Pondy Bazaar also has an effect on the trafficalong Venkatanarayana Road, Duraisamy Subway, and CIT Colony Main Road.

The shopkeepers however said that the flow of shoppers has reduced over the years. Thisyear too online sites like Amazon offering mega discounts from the beginning of October willhave a big impact on the sales, they pointed out.
