Glossary
BitstreamThe digital form of multi-channel data (e.g.5.1 channel) before decoding.DecoderA decoder restores coded audio signals on DVDsto normal.Dolby DigitalThis is a method of coding digital signalsdeveloped by Dolby Laboratories. Apart fromstereo (2-channel) audio, these signals can alsobe multi-channel audio. A large amount of audioinformation can be recorded on one disc using
this method.Dolby Pro LogicA surround system where a 4-channel audiotrack is recorded as 2 channels and then isrestored to 4 channels for play. The surroundchannel is monaural and can reproduce up to 7kHz.
DTS (Digital Theater Systems)This surround system is used in many movietheaters around the world. There is goodseparation between the channels, so realisticsound effects are possible.Dynamic rangeDynamic range is the difference between thelowest level of sound that can be heard abovethe noise of the equipment and the highest levelof sound before distortion occurs.Film and videoDVD-Videos are recorded using either f ilm or
video. Usually, film is recorded at 24 frames persecond, the rate movies are filmed at, whilevideo is recorded at 30 frames per second.Frame still and field stillFrames are the still pictures that make movingpictures. About thirty are shown each second. Aframe still may appear blurred but overall qualityis high. Two fields appear alternately to make up oneframe. A field still is not blurred but picture qualityis lower.
Interlace and progressive outputNTSC, the video signal standard, has 480interlaced (I) scan lines, whereas progressivescanning uses twice the number of scan lines. This is called 480P.I/P/BMPEG 2, the video compression standardadopted for use with DVD-Video, codes framesusing these 3 picture types.I: Intra coded picture
This picture has the best quality and is thebest to use when adjusting the picture.
P: Predictive coded pictureThis picture is calculated based on past I orP-pictures.
B: Bidirectionally-predictive coded pictureThis picture is calculated by comparing pastand future I and P-pictures so it has thelowest volume of information.
Linear PCM (pulse code modulation)These are uncompressed digital signals, similarto those found on CDs.
