You are considered active once you earn your credential and as

long as certification is maintained.

If you let your certification lapse, you may no longer refer to

yourself as a credential holder or use the designation. You must

start the initial application process all over again and retake the

exam.

If you are a member in good standing and are going to retire,

you are eligible to apply for retired status. You must no longer

receive payment for practicing project management and have

been a credential holder for 10 years. You must send a written

request to PMI by e-mail, see website. Cost (there’s always a

cost) = US$100. You can go active again, see PMP Handbook.

So what about those PDUs? They are the measuring unit used to

quantify approved learning and professional service activities

PDU activities for PMPs must be related to PM topics

Each activity yields one PDU per hour spent on the activity

PDUs fall into one of two categories, Education, or Giving Back

to the Profession and breaks down like this:

Education Giving Back to the Profession

Courses offered by a Registered

Education Providers (R.E.P.s), chapters or

communities of practice

Creating New Project Management

PDU requirements to maintain the PMP credential -

Panama City Branch

Panama City Branch 25 August 2011 12

Fractions of PDUs may be reported in quarterly increments.

(Should I explain that one?)

If you attend courses that calculate by using Continuing

Education Units (CEUs) then for conversion purposes, one

CEU equals 10 PDUs.

You should maintain a CCR folder with back up information

that supports your reported PDU activity.

A percentage of credential holders (not quantified) will be

randomly audited. Maintain documentation for 18 months

after your cycle has ended.

Monthly Members Meeting – 1 PDU/month = up to12

PDUs/year. For a 3-year cycle you could have up to 36 PDUs

or 60% of your requirement, and they’re free.

Serve on the Board of Directors (volunteer or elected) =

approx. 12 PDUs/year. More free PDUs

Present at a monthly meeting – estimate 3 – 7 PDUs (free

Attend Chapter Spring Seminar = 8 PDUs ($70 total) 2

seminars/cycle = 16 PDUs (not free)

Be a PM = 5 PDUs/year or 15/cycle (They pay you!)

Total for all the above = 36+12+5+16+15 = 84 (only need 60)

Take a college course, write a book or an article

The list could go on, and on but you get the idea

There should be no reason to scramble for PDUs at the end of

your cycle. That’s just being lazy! (my own editorialization)

In the earlier example we had leftover PDUs. What happens

with those? Can I transfer them over to the next cycle?

Yes you can, but you’re limited as follows:

Only PDUs earned in the final year (12 months) of your cycle

can be transferred.

Any additional ones are not counted.

Panama City Branch 25 August 2011 26

A PMP requires 60 PDUs per cycle as does a PgMP credential

You only need to earn 60 (not 120) PDUs per cycle to

maintain both credentials

If you have a PMP and wish to earn a PgMP then you will

need to “align” your CCR cycles so that PDUs earned for one

are applied to both

There are two options available that you will need to choose

from during the application process for your “new” credential

Panama City Branch

Panama City Branch 25 August 2011 27

Option A:

Year 1 Year 2 Year 35 PDUs earned

Current Credential CCR Cycle

Year 1 Year 2 Year 3

New Credential CCR Cycle

They will share PDUs going forward. Any earned before the

new credential are forfeited.

Panama City Branch 25 August 2011 28

Option B:

Year 1 Year 2 Year 35 PDUs earned

Current Credential CCR Cycle

Year 1 Year 2 Year 3

The new credential will share PDUs already earned and those

going forward.

In the 3rd quarter of 2011 PMI will introduce a new certification,

the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)SM

Many project professionals are seeing a demand for Agile

practices and are eager to learn and apply them. Additionally,

organizations are seeing value in using Agile practices to deliver

projects more quickly, with less wasted labor and costs due to

misunderstood or ill-defined requirements.

PMI sponsored research revealed the following statistics:

68% of the organizations using Agile techniques would find value in an

Agile certification

63% of hiring managers would encourage their project managers to pursue

an Agile certification

Panama City Branch

Panama City Branch 25 August 2011 30

If you are a PMP you will need to do the following:

1. Have 1,500 hours working on Agile project teams in the last two years

2. 21 contact hours earned in Agile project management topics

3. Pay your money, $435 member, $495 non-member

4. Take the exam, 120 questions, multiple choice

5. Maintain 30 PDUs per CCR cycle

Pilot program is currently underway.

Exams begin September 1st.

Q4 2011 the first PMI-ACP certifications will be awarded to

successful pilot candidates.

See the PMI-ACP Handbook for more information.

A Role Delineation Study (RDS) is conducted

every 3 – 5 years by a third party* and project

management professionals (3,000 credential

holders) from around the world. They discussed

the roles associated with each credential and the

tasks and responsibilities that are expected to be

performed within that role. A Role Delineation is

basically a job analysis. It also provided them a

blueprint for the exam and links the exam

questions to the role.

* - Professional Examination Service (PES)

Panama City Branch 25 August 2011 43

Panama City BranchPanama City Branch

The RDS states that candidates for the PMP

credential should:

Perform their duties under general supervision and are

responsible for all aspects of the project until closed

Lead and direct cross-functional teams to deliver projects

within the constraints of schedule, budget and scope

Demonstrate sufficient knowledge and experience to

appropriately apply a methodology to projects that have

reasonably well-defined requirements and deliverables.

Panama City Branch 25 August 2011 44

Panama City BranchPanama City Branch

Beginning August 31 new exam will be used

PMP Examination Blueprint looks like this:

Panama City Branch 25 August 2011 45

DomainOld Percentage

New Percentage

of Questions

Initiating the Project 11% 13%

Planning the Project 23% 24%

Executing the Project 27% 30%

Monitoring and Controlling the Project 21% 25%

Closing the Project 9% 8%

Professional and Social Responsibility 9% 0%

TOTAL 100% 100%

Panama City BranchPanama City Branch

The main things that came out of the RDS:

Approximately 30% of the PMP exam content will

change. No more details than that were provided except

what follows.

Professional and Social Responsibility are based on

PMI’s Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. The

RDS indicated that this should be viewed as integrated

into the day-to-day role of a project manager and

important in each phase of the project lifecycle.

Panama City Branch 25 August 2011 46

Panama City BranchPanama City Branch

A list of “Cross-Cutting Knowledge and Skills” was

developed that crosses most domains and the exam

should also reflect that. The list includes things like:

Active listening, brainstorming techniques, conflict resolution,

facilitation, leadership tools and techniques, Negotiating,

presentation tools and techniques, project management software,

relationship management, team motivation, time management.

(See the full list in the publication)

Panama City Branch 25 August 2011 47

For a short period of time, exam results will not be

available immediately following completion of the

exam. There will be a 4 – 6 week period after taking

the exam and receiving results via e-mail. The delay

is necessary any time an exam changes to allow for

validating the new exam structure. What will

happen is:

PMP candidates who take the computer-based exams on

or after Aug. 31 will not receive immediate results at the

Prometric site.

Panama City Branch 25 August 2011 48

Panama City BranchPanama City Branch

Those taking paper based exams will experience a delay

in receiving their results also.

Once PMI validates the results (by mid-Oct) Prometric

sites will resume providing individuals with immediate

exam results at the testing center.

Each PMP candidate will receive an e-mail indicating

their results are available at PMI.org.

All candidates can expect to receive their examination

results by mid-October.
