Demographics

• Pamlico County’s 2011 population estimate was 13,214 with a growth of .5% since April 2010. 51.1% are males and 48.9% are females. Minorities accounted for 22% of the total population.

• The population is spread out with 19% ≤ 19, 6% from 20 to 24, 23% from 25 to 44, 29% from 45 to 64, and 23% who were 65 years of age or older.

• Reports from the NC State Center for Health Statistics indicate that from 2009 to 2010: – Marriages increased by 3 or 3.6% (82

marriages)– Divorces/annulments decreased by 11 or

17% (52 divorces/annulments)

Pamlico County Pregnancies

• Reports from the NC State Center for Health Statistics indicate that from 2009 to 2010:– Induced abortion decreased by 2 or 9% – Live births decreased by 7 or 6% – Fetal deaths (stillbirths) increased by 4

• For the year 2010, Pamlico County had a rate of 19.2 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, which is higher than the NC rate of 7.0.

• In 2011, there were 2 infant and child deaths in Pamlico County.

• According to the 2011Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey, 36.0% of respondents in Eastern NC reported that they are overweight; 32.4% of respondents in Eastern NC reported that they are obese.

Tobacco Use

• According to the 2011Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey, 23.9% of respondents in Eastern NC reported that smoke. 20.8% reported that they smoked in 2010.

Substance Use

• According to the 2011Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey, 94% of respondents in Eastern NC reported that do not participate in heavy drinking. In 2010, 97% of respondents reported that they do not heavily drink.

Hospital Discharges - Asthma

• In 2010,Pamlico County had a discharge rate of 98.7 per 100,000 which is lower than the NC rate of 109.8.

• There were 13 hospital discharges with a primary diagnosis of asthma.

• In 2010, Pamlico County had a rate of 52.2 per 100,000 which is lower than the NC rate of 166.0 for children ages 0-14.

• There was 1 hospital discharge with a primary diagnosis of asthma.

Pamlico County Sexually Transmitted Infections

• Reports from the NC Department of Health & Human Services, Epidemiology Branch indicate that from 2010 to 2011:– Chlamydia has increased by almost 3% or 1

case– Gonorrhea has increased by 31% or 4 cases– HIV disease has decreased by 1 at 0

Un-Insured and/or Under-insured

• HOPE patients earn less than two times the federal poverty level, but earn too much to qualify for Medicaid. They are too young for Medicare and can not afford insurance to take care of their chronic conditions

• In 2011, HOPE Clinic helped 800 people.

Obesity• Pamlico County Health Department

conducted an assessment of fruit/vegetable outlets in Pamlico County.

• Working closely with Region 10 Community Transformation Program to increase the number of new/revised comprehensive plans that include health consideration & increase the number of joint-use agreements that increase access to physical activity opportunities.

• County employees continue to participate in the County Walking Program on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s at the Pamlico County High School track.

• Girls On The Run (GOTR) programs are being held and taught at Fred Anderson Elementary School & Arapahoe Charter School.– In December, all 22 girls from this fall GOTR session

plus 7 girls from previous seasons completed the 5K Fun Run.

– The Girls On The Run Dream Team consists of over 100 girls who have participated in GOTR since 2009.

– Of the 109 Dream Team girls, 53 made Honor Roll, Principal’s List or Director List during the 2nd Quarter.

Substance Abuse

• A recent medicine drop held in Pamlico County yielded 10 pounds of prescription medication.

• A permanent, locked, prescription drop-off location has been established in the lobby of the Pamlico County Sheriff’s Department.

Substance Abuse

• Coastal Coalition for Substance Abuse Prevention is offering Youth Empowered Solution conference in December 2012. The training will teach 40 youths how to speak in public, partner with adults, build community support, and work with policy makers by making their lives healthier and safer by preventing underage drinking.

• Conducted an assessment of tobacco policies in local municipalities in Pamlico County.

• Working closely with Region 10 Community Transformation Project to increase the number of smoke-free public places in Pamlico County.
