Trick Or Trunk….

World’s safest most unconventional Trick or Treat!

This community event is a lot of fun and has the added advantage of being far safer than con-ventional trick or treating.

What is Trick or Trunk?

Residents who are interested in a trick or treat set up where everyone decorates their cars, RV’s, or vans; to have children trick or treat from their vehicles trunk. Instead of going door to door the children will go from trunk to trunk. All vehicles will be backed into a parking space with the trunk facing out. The entire car or just the trunk can be decorated. Bring enough candy/ prizes for approximately 150 kids. You may dress however you would like but we ask that costumes be kid friendly. You may have music playing at your site and you may decorate the ground around your vehicle. If you like to have fun on Halloween, and have the opportunity to dress up and pass out candy to children, win prizes for the best decorated car trunk and costume. Then you need to par-ticipate in Trick or Trunk. The event will be held on Saturday, October 27th, 2007 during the Children’s NOT So Haunted Hayride from 1:00 – 3:00 pm at 10801 Roberts Road. Please call the Community Center at 430-4500 for more information. AMVETS OPERATION DVD DONATE NEW OR USED DVDs for the Troops in Iraq & Afghanistan Safe entertainment is a concept that is difficult at best our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan. Even baseball and softball games are no longer possible because of snipers, mines, bombs and other terrorist activities. AMVETS, Operation DVD is an appeal to patriotic Americans to donate their new and used DVDs which will then be shipped to our fighting men and woman overseas. AMVETS, Operation DVD is an official program of AMVETS (a nationally chartered Veterans organization in exsistence for over sixty years). * Libraries of DVDs will be established at all bases in Iraq and Afghanistan for the entertainment of our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines. * Our goal is one million + new & used DVDs donated by the American public. * Most bases have a reinforced recreation room equipped with a TV and DVD player. Similar facilities exist on ships. Military (with a portable DVD player) will be able to check out DVDs (like a library book) and then return them for another. The project goal is to have 200-250 titles in rotation at each base. * This may be the only safe entertainment some will have on their tour of duty. * “Children titles “ donated will be distributed to Servicemen’s families (Stateside) through the Family Readiness Group with the assistance of AMVETS Please drop off any new or used DVDs to the Palos Hills Community Center, 8455 W. 103rd Street, during regular business hours.

OPERATION LIFELINE PRESENTATION BY DR. BARRY KAUFMAN, A VETERAN TV & RADIO HEALTH REPORTER Dr. Barry Kaufman, a veteran television and radio health reporter, currently hosts “Healthy Minute” on WBBM News Radio 780 will present “Operation Lifesaver.” The awareness program is dedicated to ending tragic collisions, fatalities and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and on railroad rights of way. FACT: Every 2 hours in the U.S. a vehicle or pedestrian is struck by a train. FACT: A motorist is 20 times more likely to die in a crash involving a train than another vehicle. FACT: Nearly 50% of vehicle/train collisions occur at crossings with gates, lights, and bells. Operation Lifesaver strives to increase public awareness about the dangers around the rails. The program seeks to educate both drivers and pedestrians of all ages to make safe decisions at crossings and around railroad tracks. As mature adults continue driving well into their 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond it’s vital they fully understand what it takes to stay safe around railroad tracks and trains. This will help them act as role models, encouraging their children and grandchildren to also make safe decisions around tracks and trains. Location: Community Activity Center Date: Thursday, September 20, 2007 Time: 7:00 pm Cost: Free Reservations are mandatory on or before September 17th

CHILD SAFETY RESTRAINT INSPECTIONS Everyday, children sustain serious injuries and die in motor vehicle crashes. Many of these injuries and deaths can be avoided with the correct use of child safety seats and safety belts. However, many adults are unaware they are using the safety restraint incorrectly, thereby placing their child at risk. Many safety experts believe that between 80 percent to 90 percent of child safety seats are installed and/or used incorrectly. The City of Palos Hills Police Dept. now has an officer certified to inspect infant and child safety seats in your vehicle by appointment. Please call the Police Dept. at the non-emergency number 598-2272 to ask for Officer Nowak, during regular business hours to make an appointment or with any other questions on this important ser-vice. Just a few minutes to have your child safety restraint inspected can make all the difference in the life of your child. Once again the non-emergency number is 598-2272 ask for Officer Nowak.

PENNIES FROM HEAVEN What good is a penny? Most people would tell you it’s not good for anything. In some cases that’s true. You can no

longer buy a piece of gum with it and most vending machines will not even take them. Some people even throw them away, but to others pennies can mean a meal. The Greater Chicago Food Depository allows shelters and food pantries to purchase food for just pennies a pound. What good is a penny? Not a lot when its only one, but gath-

ered together for the benefit of others less fortunate their value becomes apparent and they become very strong. Please bring in your pennies to The Palos Hills Community Resource & Recreation

Department, 8455 West 103rd Street, Palos Hills.

Together we can make a Difference!
