Page 1 WEEK 7 February 21-25, 2018 With his second win in two days, Olivier Philippaerts (BEL) took home the top prize in the $132,000 Rushy Marsh Farm Grand Prix CSI 3* on Friday, February 16, at the 2018 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF). There were 43 entries in the Friday night grand prix, and seven of those were clear over the course designed by Ana Catalina Cruz-Harris of Mexico. As the second to last in the ring for the jump-off, Philippaerts and H&M Ikker, a ten-year-old BWP gelding by Ogano Sitte x Up To Date owned by Roger Van Nuffelen, put down a smooth and fast round in 38.85 seconds for the win. Gustavo Prato of Argentina rode Carna Z, a 13-year-old Zangersheide mare by Crown Z x Grannus owned by Equus Forte LLC, to second place with a clear round in 40.38 seconds, while Canada’s Mario Deslauriers finished third on Bardolina 2, a nine-year-old Holsteiner mare by Clarimo x Landros owned by Wishing Well Farm LLC. Prato has been riding Carna Z for two years and only started doing 1.40m-1.50m last year. “Now I think she has started to be consistent,” he said of the sensitive mare, which jumps with no boots and a special headstall on its bridle. “I thought she was going to be a little bit tired today because she jumped the first two days and this was the third day in a row. The first round I felt like she was a little bit tired and rubbing some fences, and then in the jump-off she felt way better.” Deslauriers and Bardolina 2 started in the 1.40m jumpers at WEF in 2017 and the mare has moved up in competition quickly. “It’s a young horse that I think is the real deal, so I backed off a little and tried to build her up this winter here at WEF,” said Deslauriers. “She had a long rest after indoors, so now I just want to try to get everything ready for the summer and the goal is to hopefully be on the team at the end of summer for [the World Equestrian Games].” Philippaerts (24) and H&M Ikker also won Thursday’s $35,000 Equinimity WEF Challenge Cup Round 6. “He was a little tired after the jump- off from yesterday, but again today he was very good,” said Philippaerts of his partner of three years. “It was a good day for him and I am very happy with him.” This is Philippaerts’s first time competing at WEF, and he planned accurately, bringing horses that would jump well outdoors compared to his usual indoor winter season in Europe. “This one is more like an outdoor horse and he jumps very good out here,” said Philippaerts, who is only three months back in the saddle after a fall and shoulder surgery in August last year. “He’s been jumping well the last two weeks, so I was hoping to get a win after that. This week he went very well, so I think the horse is going to stay a little longer and maybe do a few more shows in the month of March. It’s been very good for me as a European rider – we go to different venues every week in Europe – to come here for three weeks and jump four different shows. It makes coming really worth it.” Louise Serio won for the third time in the history of the $100,000 WCHR Peter Wetherill Palm Beach Hunter Spectacular, picking up this year’s victory with Jennifer Burger’s Rock Harbor on Saturday, February 17, at the 2018 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) at Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. The WCHR Peter Wetherill Palm Beach Hunter Spectacular takes place during World Championship Hunter Rider (WCHR) week at WEF as the feature “Saturday Night Lights” event. The United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) founded WCHR in 1992 to recognize hunter riders and the Hunter Spectacular debuted shortly after. Each year, hunter riders look forward to a chance to compete under the lights in the International Arena at PBIEC. Thirty-six of the country’s top professionals, juniors, and amateurs tackled the two-round course, which is offered at three heights (3’6”, 3’9”, and 4’) and designed by Steve Stephens. The top 12 riders returned for the second round. Each of the competitors qualified for the class by winning either champion or reserve in one of the specified hunter divisions during WCHR week at WEF or through another WCHR designation. The judges for this year’s Hunter Spectacular were Chris Wynne and Sissy Wickes in position one, Shane George and Rick Fancher in position two, and John French and Mary Lisa Leffler in position three. Overall placings were decided by combining scores from the first and second rounds. After leading in the first round with a score of 89.50, Serio and Rock Harbor, an 11-year-old Warmblood gelding, returned as the final pair in the handy round. They scored 86.75 for a 176.25 total to win the class. “My horse was awesome tonight,” said Serio of her partner of six years. “I thought he jumped really well. I’ve never done him in a night class under the lights. I thought he was really on his game.” Serio, of Kennett Square, PA, won this class twice before, in 2005 with Costello and 2011 with Castle Rock. “You never know when you’re going to get back here again,” she said. “It’s very rewarding. Jennifer Burger who owns Rock Harbor has been a wonderful client for a long time and she’s been a big supporter, so to do it on her horse is really nice.” Burger said, “I’m on top of the world. Louise is an unbelievable rider. She’s found me an amazing horse, and tonight was the crescendo of those two things coming together and the best it could be.” After winning this class the past two years, Scott Stewart of Wellington, FL, and Catch Me, a ten-year-old Holsteiner gelding owned by Gochman Sport Horse LLC, had to overcome one mistake in the first round and a score of 83.33 to complete their three-peat. They made an amazing move up the standings from 11th to second place with the best second round score of 91 for a total of 174.33. The sixth week of the 2018 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) started out strong on Wednesday, February 14, for Molly Ashe (USA) recording a one-two finish in the $35,000 Douglas Elliman 1.45m Jumpers on Louisburg Farm’s Balous Day Date and Picobello Choppin PC.

It was another one-two finish in the $6,000 Bainbridge 1.40m Jumpers with Winn Alden (USA) taking home the top two spots on Ensor van het Moleneind, owned by Richard Cheska, and Southern Arches LLC’s Presley. Third place went to Laura Chapot and ISHD Dual Star.

It was the 24-year-old Belgian rider Olivier Philippaerts (BEL) who triumphed over 53 fellow competitors to take the $35,000 Equinimity WEF Challenge Cup Round 6. Aboard the 10-year-old gelding H&M Ikker — who is still owned by his breeder Roger Van Nuffelen — Philippaerts posted a blistering 37.61 seconds to take an unassailable lead.

Second-placed Francisco Musa (BRA) and Catch Me Imperio Egipicio were almost two seconds adrift, with the only other clear in the jump-off coming from American rider Callan Solem (Davidson), who finished third.

On Friday on the grass derby field, Anne Kursinski (USA) and Quinley, owned by Jose Alberto Martinez Barone were victorious in the $6,000 Bainbridge 1.40m Jumpers. Victoria Birdsall (USA) and Doman, owned by Liberty Farm LLC, won the $1,000 Hermès Under 25 1.40m class.

A brand new partnership triumphed in a field of 27 starters in the $35,000 Hollow Creek Farm 1.50m Classic during week six. On the Derby field at Equestrian Village (home to the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival), Brazil’s Francisco Jose Mesquita Musa and

Biscayo produced the fastest of only two clears in the three-strong jump-off.

The $25,000 CP National Grand Prix was held on the grass derby field, and it was 20-year-old Victoria Colvin of Loxahatchee, FL, who sped to victory on Clochard, owned by Neil Jones Equestrian Inc.

There were 26 entries in the class, and seven in the jump-off. Colvin was the last to go, and she and Clochard, a 10-year-old Belgian Warmblood stallion, raced across the field to clock a time of 40.902 seconds for the win.

FACES OF WEFMAGGIE GREENE

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR SHOW EXPERIENCE AND THE HORSE YOU COMPETE ON?Right now, I’m showing in the [Children’s Hunter Older division], and I ride a six-year-old who just turned six this past September. My trainers do a lot of horse breeding so he is originally a horse that came from our farm, and I got him when he was three. We did the 3’3” junior hunters for most of last year at Northeast horse shows, such as both weeks at Old Salem Farm, the Vermont Summer Festival, Ox Ridge Hunt Club, and the Capital Challenge Horse Show. This is the first time here for both of us, and this is my senior year of high school, so it’s nice to be able to finally get down here before I go off to college.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT WEF AND BEING A COMPETITOR FOR THE FIRST TIME HERE?It’s amazing. I have been here a few times as a spectator but I really can’t believe how much goes into running the entire show. I walk around and they’re running ten or so rings at one time. You don’t really appreciate how many people it takes to make this what it is until you’re here showing.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST POSITIVE EXPERIENCE SO FAR?Last week, we had a bit of a rough start to our Saturday. My horse is a little bit spooky, which is expected since he’s younger, and it was his first time showing in the South Ring, so it was a bit hard for him. However, on Sunday we were in ring 7, which is probably my favorite ring now, and we were second in our first jumping class, so I was so proud of him. It was so nice for him to end his first week on a good note, especially at a horse show like this. We were also coming into it a little late, since last week was our first week here. My trainer just had a baby so we had to miss the first four weeks of the show.

WAS IT DIFFICULT TO ENTER THE WEF SHOW SEASON SO FAR INTO THE CIRCUIT?Most of the horses at my barn really rose to the occasion and have been great so far, even though they didn’t get much time to really settle in before we asked a lot of them. My horse has only been down here since week four, and last weekend was my whole farm’s first weekend in the show ring. Hopefully, we will have another successful week of showing, then one or two weeks off, and then finish out the season with the last two weeks!

WHEN YOU ARE NOT IN SCHOOL, OR RIDING, WHAT CAN WE FIND YOU DOING?I come from a really big sports family, so the first thing I think of is that my dad and I go to a lot of hockey games. We are big New York Rangers fans. Other than that, home, school, riding, occasional sports games, that’s pretty much it. I guess you could say that I’m pretty similar to a lot of the other competitors here in that riding is pretty much everything.

Returning for the handy round, Stewart said he “had nothing to lose.” He continued, “I had a little bit of a funny jump in the first round, so I was really happy that I made it back at all in the second round. I sort of just went for it. It was probably one of the best rounds I’ve ever had, especially for the handy. Everything just worked. The jump that he took a little look at in the first round was the jump I really sliced in the handy, and he was perfect about it. It all just worked out great.”

In her first time competing at WEF, Tracy Fenney traveled from Flower Mound, TX, to finish in the top three of the Hunter Spectacular. She and MTM Outbid, an eight-year-old Warmblood gelding owned by MTM Farm, had an 85.33 in the first round and sat seventh. A solid handy round score of 88.83 moved them up the standings to third with a 174.16 total.

“I was a little starstruck when I first got here,” Fenney admitted. “Showing against all of these guys is amazing. It’s a great class and a really fun crowd. My horse seems to deal with whatever, the

Victory on the grass derby field on Sunday, February 18, in the $25,000 Hermès Under 25 Grand Prix went to 17-year-old Madison Goetzmann (USA) riding Prestigious at the 2018 Winter Equestrian Festival.

On the grass derby field on Sunday, 50 entries competed over a course designed by Ana Catalina Cruz-Harris (MEX), and ten of those were clear to advance to the jump-off. Lacey Gilbertson (USA) and Seabrook LLC’s Baloppi set the early winning pace in 41.97 seconds with no faults, which would hold up for second place.

Next into the ring for the jump-off was Ailish Cunniffe (USA) on Baloucento 2, owned by Whipstick Farm Ltd. They finished in 42.16 seconds and placed third.

Five trips later, the winning time was lowered to 41.53 seconds when Goetzmann and her own Prestigious finished the jump-off. Three additional rounds were unable to catch Goetzmann’s time and stay clear through the course.

It was the second win in a row for Goetzmann, who also captured yesterday’s $10,000 Hermès U25 Welcome with Prestigious.

“I think yesterday’s round really set me up for today,” said Goetzmann. “I got my horse’s rideability really nice yesterday and patting off the ground with the short turns and efficient track. Coming in today, I knew he was going to be set for the long strides and galloping in the jump-off.

“Going into the jump-off, I knew that I could trust him to gallop up in the first line and maybe do one less (stride) than the others,” she continued about her second round. “He came right back after that and really was just perfect through the rest of the jump-off. He really saved me to the last jump; I was a little deep and he covered it right up. I trust him in that and he was really perfect. I couldn’t be happier with him.”

Goetzmann and Prestigious, an 11-year-old Westphalian gelding by Con Cento x Corofino, have been strong competitors in the U25 division leading up to this winter, having won the silver medal at the USEF U25 Show Jumping National Championship in November.

“He’s a horse that I want to move up to the bigger level – 1.50m, three-star, four-star eventually,” she said.

Gilbertson, 24, describes Baloppi, an 11-year-old Danish Warmblood mare, as “pretty simple” and “good in all sorts of rings.”

Gilbertson has been extremely consistent throughout the Hermès U25 series thus far, having won the week 2 grand prix in the WEF International Arena and recording a clear round in the team event in week 4 under the lights in the Global International Arena.

“It’s an advantage for us for her to be able to stay consistent throughout the series when we have to do so many different arenas,” said Gilbertson. “I think it’s really cool. It makes it really exciting and it doesn’t get boring. For them, it keeps them sharper and fresher and ready for what’s coming next.”

Cunniffe and Baloucento 2 have been paired together a year and the “energizer bunny,” according to Cunniffe, wasn’t tired at all after competing two days in a row.

“All of our horses are kind of on the hotter side and it’s really hot out today,” said the 20-year-old student at Southern Methodist University. “They had to work hard yesterday and without a day off in between. It was to our advantage that our horses are on the hotter side.”

WEF 8 hosts the next Hermès Under 25 Grand Prix class, with the $35,000 Semi-Final on Friday, March 2, under the lights at 7 p.m. in the WEF International Arena.
