FAMILY OF THE MONTH Mario La Schiazza and Gerald Marenich, Family Activities

Congratulations to the Loren Wallin Family, Arden-Carmichael Council's November Family of the Month. Loren is a member of St Ignatius Parish, where he and his late wife, Aurora, were married. They raised three children: Cristal, Malenda, and Elisa. Loren was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and lived there for one year, before his family moved to Sacramento sixty-six years ago. Loren went through RCIA Program and became a Catholic on

April 10, 1982. Loren and Aurora were very actively involved in Marriage Encounter, Evenings for the Engaged, Parish Renewal, and the Children's Liturgy of the Word. Loren has been a member of the Knights of Columbus for more than thirty-two years, having joined the knighthood on January 13, 1987. He received his Fourth Degree on November 1, 1992, and is a member of the Bishop Manogue Assembly. He has been very active in both council and assembly programs. He has served in numerous positions within our council and his assembly, including Grand Knight of our council and the Faithful Navigator of the Bishop Manogue Assembly. He currently serves as the Director of Council Youth Activities and is the chairman for our Altar Servers Appreciation Program; e organizes and runs the council's annual Free Throw Contest Program and assists in the District Deputy's Free Throw Program. For years, Brother Loren was chairman and host of the council's annual Christmas party, preparing the dinner, while Aurora assisted and helped to decorate the hall. Loren also hosted Assembly 50's hospitality suite at past 4th Degree Exemplifications. Loren and Aurora were very active in supporting the Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home, and Aurora volunteered much of her time at "Sharing God's Bounty", the monthly dinner held at St Ignatius to feed the needy of the community. Loren and members of his family have participated in many fund raising events, including manning our annual fireworks booth, and the tootsie roll drive. Loren can always be counted on as a member of the kitchen staff at the many pancake breakfasts that our council hosts for various parish ministries. Council 4970 and its members are justly proud and very fortunate to list the Wallin Family as members of the council.

WIDOW’S MASS AND LUNCHEON That somber yet inspirational event that honors our council’s widows happened again on November 9th. Thirteen widows of our fallen bothers gathered at Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church and remembered with love and thankfulness their husbands. The Mass was followed by a very fine lunch, and we, as a council, continued the tradition of never forgetting our members, both young and old.

    PRE-BUSINESS MEETING DINNER

The December dinner will be provided by GK Miguel Sabral as the annual Christmas party. Interested in being an upcoming chef? Contact Miguel Sabral (916-397-1728) or Jerry Butler (916-642-2904). Per Supreme rules, only Brothers can attend the meeting itself starting at 8 PM.

I have stopped listening. Why are you still talking? I’m more confused than a chameleon in a bag of Skittles Retirement To-do list: Wake up. Nailed it! I only drink water that has been through a brewery first. So when does this “old enough to know better” kick in? I do all my own stunts, but not intentionally Sometimes it takes me all day to get nothing done! Dusted once. It came back. Not falling for that again. Sawdust is man-glitter. I consider “on-time” to be when I get there. In my defense, I was unsupervised.

Dept. of Veterans Affairs Plans to Study Military Toxic Exposures, Possible Connections to Veteran Illnesses

Dan Aseltine, Veterans Chairman The Department of Veterans Affairs has announced plans to systematically research recurring medical problems experienced by Veterans of all ages: rare cancers, crippling respiratory illnesses, birth defects among their children, and similar issues. The VA estimates that over three million Veterans were exposed during their military service to airborne toxins and burn pits, just since September 11, 2001. Among the questions to be addressed in this forthcoming study: why are these relatively young and healthy troops and Veterans falling so seriously ill? Why are they dying in such large numbers at such early ages? This major study on environmental exposures during military service will attempt to discover possible connections to illnesses among Veterans and their children. Dr. Rachel B. Ramoni, Chief of Research and Development for the VA, noted that the VA is developing a "major investment in toxic exposures." Veterans of different eras, such as Vietnam (Agent Orange) and the Persian Gulf War (Gulf War syndrome), have been waiting for decades for the VA to recognize their exposures. In November, 2019, at a Washington, D. C. conference devoted to prostate cancer among Veterans, Dr. Ramoni commented that Veterans "...for good reason have been irritated with us as an organization because we have not done a lot of work, especially clinical work, on military exposures. I have apologized to them ... I have committed that, in (Fiscal Year 2021), we are going to make major investments in toxic exposures. We are in the planning phases for that now, but in (Fiscal Year 2021), we will start to roll that out. That's something that will cut across all our research." Dr. Ramoni concluded that Veterans have anecdotally told her of a "dizzying array" of exposures "so this is where this needs to be driven by scientists and the Veterans working together." Posted on Thursday, October 24, 2019 11:30 am in Veteran of the Day

Today’s #Veteran Of The Day is Air Force Veteran Kenneth C. Macdonald, who served during the Vietnam War in California and Taiwan. After completing his Bachelor of Education in Physical Education and the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program at the State University of New York – Buffalo, Kenneth C. Macdonald commissioned as a second lieutenant. In June 1967 the Air Force assigned him to Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California. There, Macdonald served as the custodian of the Central Base Fund until June 1970. This fund paid for welfare and recreation services for service members assigned to the base. While assigned to Travis Air Force Base, he was promoted to first lieutenant in January 1969. For his exceptional service there, Macdonald received the Air Force Commendation Medal in January 1971. The Air Force assigned Macdonald to Ching Chuan Kang Air Base in Taiwan and promoted him to captain in June 1970. He served as chief of Special Services for the base until June 1971. Macdonald was assigned to the inactive Air Force Reserves for six years. After receiving his honorable discharge from the Air Force, he began a 32-year career in the pharmaceutical industry. Macdonald and his wife live in Gold River, California. He continues to serve his community through his work with the Knights of Columbus and the Sacramento River Cats Minor League Baseball team. LIFE IS LIKE A CASH REGISTER

    Joe Romanazzi, Past Grand Knight

Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen was renowned for his preaching on television and radio, as well his authorship of numerous books from 1930 to 1968. Many of us spent countless hours reading his literature and listening to his programs. The beloved Archbishop Sheen observed that, “Life is like a cash register, in that every account, every thought, every deed, like every sale, is registered and recorded.”

One of the most important elements of Faith in Action is the conducting of a robust Life component. Council 4970 has a long and proud history of doing our part to protect human life at all stages. Our award-winning Life programs and activities have been consistently recognized year after year by the State and Supreme Councils. The vigorous protection of human life is reflected in our Council’s regular presence at local abortion clinics, 40 Days for Life, Life Chain, Novena for Life, Walk for Life West Coast, support of the Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home and the Sacramento Life Center, and of course our annual Intellectual Disability Drive for Camp ReCreation. Our Co-Directors of Life programs, Brothers Peter Mendenhall and John Mizerak, do an outstanding job of organizing, coordinating, and implementing our Council’s involvement in all of these programs. Our Brother Knights generously support these events with their time, treasure, and prayers.

God entrusts us with the gift of life. All human life is sacred and must be treated with respect and kindness. As Christians and faithful Knights, we have a moral duty to be a voice for life, especially for those who have no voice. That is why it was so gratifying to see Knights and others joining together Walking the Walk-and Talking the Talk at the annual Life Chain on October 6, 2019. In contrast to last year’s Life Chain when we were buffeted by 35 mph gusts of wind, the afternoon of Respect Life Sunday 2019, was bright and warm, with just a slight breeze. This year the Life Chain consisted of Knights and Lady Knights, along with three ladies from the Bayside Church in Citrus Heights, all holding up signs promoting Life. It was encouraging to see a couple of our newer members, Bill Davis and Josh Figueroa, participating in the Life Chain. Brother Josh even brought his brother Raphael, along to witness for life.

My Brothers, the way we live our lives, protect the vulnerable lives of others, and interact with our fellow human beings accompanies us to eternity. Archbishop Sheen’s comparison of life to a cash register is a good one in my mind because it points out that the Lord is aware of everything we do, have done, and have ever thought about doing. Importantly, He keeps meticulous records for use later on. Our Council’s successful participation in Life programs may allow us to use the express lane at the check-out counter when the Chief Cashier rings us up on the Heavenly cash register of life. Hopefully, He will give all of us a receipt marked, Amount Paid in Full, Balance Due Zero. Incidentally, my guess is that the Chief Cash Register Operator in Heaven will not take kindly to IOUs, coupons, NSF checks, or being told the check is in the mail. He will also most likely be a sceptic when it comes to accepting Bitcoins or any other form of cryptocurrency

    YET ANOTHER EXCELLENT EFFORT!!!!!

    Peter Mendenhall, ID Drive Chairman

I am able now to tabulate the ID Drive proceeds for you. The campaign was staffed by 27 Knights and resulted in amounts higher than average. We had our successes and our challenges this year. You, and other Knights have just enabled at least 40 campers to attend Camp ReCreation. This is real joy and love for them. You guys are, once again, AWESOME!!!!! Bel Air- Eastern 1673 Emigh 879 Assumption 1120 Saint Ignatius 1284 Benefactors (28) 3055 TOTAL $ 8011

It takes a level of both humility and perseverance to stand out at a church or store and ask people to donate their hard-earned money to the charity you are representing. There are so many types and personalities out there! Although we received plenty of “nos” and “not todays”, we received so many more “yeses” and “I love the Knights!” Standing for two hours on a hard surface was hard for some of our members. Giving up several hours out of our weekend days was a big ask. Fortunately the collection, the brothership, and the sense of service soothed the aches and pains. As we approach Thanksgiving and Christmas, we are comforted to know that we, as a council, did indeed make a difference today. Special note: Joe Romanazzi has, for the past three years, donated all of his stipends from his frequent funeral altar serving to this campaign. Each year he has donated $1000! Thank you, Joe!!!!!

GOD AND THE SCIENTIST God is sitting in Heaven when a scientist says to Him: “Lord, we don’t need you anymore. Science has finally figured out a way to create life out of nothing. In other words, we can now do what you did in the beginning” ‘”Oh, is that so? Tell me…” replies God The scientist says: “We can take dirt and form it into the likeness of you and breathe life into it, thus creating man” “Well, that’s interesting. Show me” So the scientist bends down to the earth and starts to mold the soil. “Oh, no,no,” interrupts God. Get your own dirt! Saint Ignatius Work Crew!Calling all Brother Knights to join us the second Saturday of each month (starting Saturday December 14, 2019) from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. to assist Saint Ignatius with some light duty chores and projects around the parish center and school. Bring your work gloves, water, sunscreen/hat, and any tools you wish to bring. Lady Knights and prospective members welcome. Please contact our Worthy Chancellor, Dan Aseltine at [email protected] to confirm your attendance and with any questions. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
