    BRIEF INTRODUCTION

    -Taliban and other foreign militants, including al-Qaeda sympathizers, have sheltered since 2001 inPakistan.

    The military operations - Pakistan has launchedsince 2004 in South and North Waziristan Agenciesto deny al-Qaeda and the Taliban safe haven.

    ,FATA is one of - Pakistans poorest regions, withhigh poverty and unemployment and badly under-developed infrastructure. Located astride theAfghanistan border and a major regional transit

    route, its economy is dependent on smuggling.

    TALIBAN

    They ruled Afghanistan from 1996 2001. They came topower during Afghanistans long civil war .

    In 2003, after the US shifted its military efforts to Iraq,attacks on American-Led Forces intensified as the

    Taliban and Al-Qaeda began to regroup. The Taliban are now imposing their law on the Tribal

    Zones.

    They played an important role to destroy the economyand development of Pakistan.

    They have blasted many music shops.

    They have arrested the foreigners and some of them arekilled by them.

    Pakistan Govt. decided to take action against them.

    PAKISTAN ARMY

    -Pakistan Army is the largest branch of the Pakistan Military, andis responsible for the protection of the state borders.

    -Pakistan Army took the action against the militants includingTaliban to get them off from the territory of Pakistan.

    -US Govt. forced Pakistani Govt. to take action.

    -Pak Army started operations in the Tribal Areas includingWaziristan, Wana, Kurrum and Bajur Agency.

    US Aid To Pakistan

    -US gave about $4 billion to Pakistan for the logistical support it

    provided for the counter-terrorism operations from 2002 to 2006.-Bush administration has used billions of dollars of aid and heavy

    political pressure to encourage Gen. Pervez Musharraf, to carry outmore aggressive military operations against militants in the tribalareas.

    Small numbers of - United States military personnel have served asadvisers to the Pakistani Army in the tribal areas, giving planningadvice and helping to integrate American intelligence

    WANA OPERATIONIn March 2004, heavy fighting broke out atAzam Warsak, near the South Waziristantown of Wana, where Pakistani governmenttroops faced an estimated 400 militantsholed up in several fortified settlements.

    It was speculated at the time that Osamabin Laden's deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri wasamong those trapped by the PakistaniArmy, but he either escaped or was never

    among these fighters.

    President Pervez Musharraf joined the US-led 'war on terror' at thesame time and in 2003 launched military operations in the tribalareas that have left 1,000 soldiers and many more rebels dead,

    according to the army.70soldiers killed in suicide attacks in the last fortnight alone, an

    estimated 1000 since the 2004 campaign on the Afghan border .

    In the first year of operations, the Pakistan army killed 100 Talibanmembers at a loss of close to 200 soldiers, according to a US

    Department of State report.

    The operation, which involved light and heavy artillery, was mainlyfocused in an area of Wana with nearly 200,000 inhabitants.
