City of Watsonville
“Opportunity through diversity; unity through
cooperation”
It is an incredible honor to serve as the mayor of the City of Watsonville. This is a city of great possibility and opportunity because of its hard working families, its rich agricultural heritage, and as an emerging hub for entrepreneurs and businesses from various industries. I am confident that the Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce directory will provide you with valuable information about the economic promise of our region.
Agriculture and food processing have been identified as vital industries to the County at large, and in particular to the Pajaro Valley. Cabrillo College’s Solari Green Technology Center, located in the heart of our historic downtown, can play a vital role in meeting the needs of a growing industry by providing training in ag-technologies and innovation that
promote 21st century jobs and careers in agriculture.
Watsonville is home to a number of companies that are growing in the light manufacturing sector. Specifically, high-tech manufacturing of components and products used in lifestyle, racing and aerospace have seen tremendous growth. Fox Racing, for example, has grown from under 100 employees to a seasonal high of over 700.
Companies like West Marine, the largest distributor and retailer in marine parts and accessories in the world, are headquartered in Watsonville. Companies like Elecraft, Orion Telescopes, Photoflex, Westek, Schmid Industries and Nordic Naturals have made Watsonville home and have continued to provide good-paying jobs for Santa Cruz County residents.
We continue to focus on providing the workforce, infrastructure and lifestyle options that have allowed these companies to grow and thrive. Our proximity to UC Santa Cruz, California State University Monterey Bay, and Cabrillo College provide many opportunities for continued collaboration with our city to develop a stronger workforce and economy.
Visit our website to learn more about the City of Watsonville at www.cityofwatsonville.org. We invite you to explore and discover the many opportunities our City has to offer.

Opportunities Abound
The Pajaro Valley is home to over 50,000 residents and the last few years have seen a burst of investment in Watsonville. Major retail expansion, new housing de-velopments, infrastructure improvement and investment and expansion of edu-cational facilities have all succeeded in creating new jobs for our community. Three new hotels and increased occu-pancy in all lodging facilities enhanced Watsonville’s tourism-related economy.
While the city’s economy is rooted in ag-riculture and food processing, Watson-ville has a diverse and stable economic base that extends far beyond those tradi-tional industries. Watsonville growers and plant scientists are innovating new berry varieties and growing methods all the time. Non-agriculture sectors of the city have grown in recent years to include a number of design, manufacturing, elec-tronics and service firms. A number of na-tional companies are headquartered in Watsonville including Granite Construc-tion Company, Graniterock, Monterey Mushrooms, S. Martinelli & Company and West Marine Products.
The City of Watsonville is committed to ensuring that Watsonville’s workforce is prepared for the 21st Century. The City, working closely with Santa Cruz County and local employment training provid-ers, has developed several job training programs to meet local market needs. Watsonville residents and businesses are able to tap into three institutions of higher education. The University of California in Santa Cruz is located just 20 miles to the north and California State Univer-sity Monterey Bay is only 20 miles to the south. Cabrillo College, the local com-munity college, with a satellite campus in Watsonville, is also a site for the Cisco Network Academy.
Watsonville is centrally located at the junctures of highways 1, 129 and 152, and is home to the only public airport in Santa Cruz County. This full service, general aviation airport provides com-mercial, recreational and emergency transportation benefits to local business-es and residents. There are at least five charter operators to meet customers’ transportation needs.
Location, Location, Location
Watsonville’s Central Coast location is not just the perfect climate to do business, it is the perfect climate for living. Watsonville is only 95 miles south of San Francisco, between the cities of Santa Cruz and Monterey. Sur-rounded by beautiful mountain ranges, canyons and the Pacific Ocean, no other location offers our combination of business friendliness and natural beauty. Our average high temperatures range from 60º in the winter to 75º in the summer. Imagine how much you can save on heating and cooling!
The natural wetlands of Watsonville offer some of the finest bird habitats in the United States and are lined by convenient trails that are perfect for walking, jogging, and cycling. Watsonville is minutes from pristine beaches and beautiful redwood forests. Add in Watsonville’s produce, food and wine, the most affordable housing on the Central Coast and our beautiful town is a perfect choice for your business and your home.

During the Agricultural History Project’s annual Day on the Farm event, now in its 12th year,
children help adults grind corn, pump water, milk cows and churn butter, bypassing the grocery store for their dinner’s ingredients.
AHP CEO John Kegebein said the event serves as a way to showcase how people worked to put food on their tables. It takes guests on a trip back in time to the old days of farming, forgoing the high-tech appliances that define modern living.
“We want to show people that food comes from the farm and not the grocery store,” he said.
With the help of adults, children are able to drive an early 1940s John Deere tractor. A tractor rodeo is also held, featuring trophies and ribbons.
A team of Clydesdale draft horses give hayrides. In addition, some guests have the chance to steer the horses around the Gazebo.
Other animals at the event include rabbits, lambs, goats, chickens and alpacas from Rock Star Alpacas.
Day on the Farm typically draws around 1,000 people locally and from nearby areas, Kegebein said.
“Day on the Farm is one of our biggest events of the year,” he said. “People of all ages have a great time participating in the activities of daily farm life of yesterday, as well as wandering through the exhibits on the history of agriculture here in Pajaro Valley.”
The 1.3-acre Agricultural History Project site sits near the front of the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, 2601 East Lake Ave. in Watsonville, and

contains its own museum, a barn and several other structures that house a fleet of antique tractors and a wealth of treasures from the Pajaro Valley’s rich agricultural heritage. It has all grown out of a letter campaign that started in late 1985.
The Agricultural History Project also holds Second Saturdays on the Farm.
Kids are able to try early-day water pumps, play hoops, string cranberries, popcorn and create paper chains, puppets, bird ornaments and other decorations.
The Gift Shop, Museum and other exhibitions will all be open as well.
Second Saturday was created to allow people to get a taste of early-day farm life in the Pajaro Valley. Each month a new theme is explored at the event.
There is plenty of free parking and the entire event is free. Donations are appreciated. For information, visit www.aghistoryproject.org or call 724-5898.

WAtsonville
The Watsonville Civic Plaza continues to be a downtown gem for the city. The successful collaboration among
the City of Watsonville, Santa Cruz County and the Superior Courts of the state of California opened in May of 2008. The 140,000-square-foot building, located at the corner of Main and Second Streets in downtown Watsonville, houses a new expanded Watsonville Library, the California Agricultural Workers History Center, City Administrative offices with Council Chambers, Superior Court facilities, and private and retail office uses. The facility is utilized by hundreds of people each day, and provides better access to public services for local residents.
A library occupies the first two floors of the building, eliminating the overcrowding that occurred in the older library and providing a safe haven for students. The building provides a homework center, study area, computer room, and a public research room. The colorful and comfortable design includes a story hour room for children, and brightly colored computers intended for use by children. The Literacy Center, on the first floor, will help adults learn to read and write. The library also houses the California Agricultural Workers History Center, showcasing the area’s agricultural history and diversity. Photos and displays highlight the diverse background of the region’s agricultural workers, and a large research room includes related documents and recordings.
The Santa Cruz County Superior Court facilities on the third floor provide expanded and improved services. The county’s family law courts have been relocated to the Civic Plaza, and the State-funded ”Self-Help Center” assists residents in accessing legal information so they more knowledgeably work through the court system. Consolidation of the courts and District Attorney offices in downtown Watsonville provides more centralized access for residents, and brings almost 100 employees downtown, contributing a major economic stimulus to
the area.
The City Council Chambers allows more people to attend Council meetings, and are used by other public agencies. City administrative offices on the fourth floor are bright and spacious, providing extraordinary views of both the downtown area and the hills to the east. State-of-the-art computer and audio visual equipment enhance both the speaker and the observer’s experience at meetings. Also located on the top floor, a community room is available for rental by public or private groups of up to 240 people for meetings and parties.
The building has commercial space for lease, including office space on the second and fourth floors and three on the first floor. It is served by a 460-space six-level parking structure that also provides parking for nearby downtown businesses.
Civic Plaza was intended to serve as a catalyst for additional private investment and job creation downtown. Completion of a 20,000-square-foot commercial building directly across Second Street, coupled with the recent relocation of the adult school to Rodriguez Street and theexpansion of the Cabrillo College - Watsonville Campus to incorporate a vocational technology center
indicate that Civic Plaza is indeed achieving that goal.
The building is truly a tribute to the long-term collaborative efforts between the City, the County of Santa Cruz and the Superior Courts of the State of California, which resulted in the creation of an outstanding work environment for the building’s occupants as well as a pleasant experience for building visitors.

Welcome to Watson-ville and the beauti-ful Pajaro Valley! We are a very diverse, multicultural community with a wide variety of business opportuni-ties. Agriculture and ag-related industry is the primary economic driver in our community,
however, in addition to agriculture, many national and world wide companies call Watsonville their home. We have a wide variety of large and small retail, manufactur-ing, and high tech companies here too. We also boast a wonderful variety of home based businesses.
the largest district in the county, and we have a great satellite campus for Cabrillo College here as well.
As an advocate for business and agriculture, we work at monitoring local, state and Federal legislation, and make recommenda-tions to the Board of Directors and govern-ing institutions. Whether you are looking for ways to improve or expand your business, start a new one, or just come to visit the beautiful beaches, wetlands and mountains of the Pajaro Valley, we at the Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture are ready to help any way we can. Our major focus is growing and serving the needs of our membership base while providing value added benefits and programs to demon-strate our commitment to local businesses. We are looking to add dynamic business people to expand our committees and develop future leadership of our organization and the community.
The continued success of our networking events and mixers are expand-ing with networking opportunities for our membership. The Ambassador committee continues to innovate in welcoming new and renewing members and promotion of our membership through ribbon cuttings and luncheons.
We promote our local area and the companies that help bring visitors to us and develop niche tourism in areas of interest to visitors such as agri-tourism and the sister city programs. We provide opportunities for education and enrichment through our Chamber trips.
We strive to be the voice to local government for local business by engaging on the behalf of members and building rapport and relation-ships with local government. Our membership is informed on issues that could impact their business and we are advocates for them in pursuing their concerns.
The Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture operates on member dues and fundraising events. The ongoing management of our members’ dues receives scrutiny and is protected through safeguards to ensure financial sustainability.

A message from our President“If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.”-Henry Ford A group of people working together toward a common goal can achieve much more than individuals working alone. That’s why the Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce is able to provide so many opportunities and resources to our members – because of great people working together. Executives and entre-preneurs, people from small and large businesses and non-profits, educators, community leaders, and residents give their time and talent to the Chamber so that other members may benefit from their expertise. And when many members work together to promote a sound, healthy environment for business and edu-cation, the success will take care of itself.
You may be saying to yourself, “That sounds great, but what’s in it for me?” My answer? Plenty!
As a member of The Pajaro Valley Chamber, you are automatically entitled to a lengthy list of direct benefits and services for your business: networking events, educational meetings, advertising opportunities, and links to the com-munities and people we serve. Your membership is an open invitation for you to meet people from other businesses and industries, get involved in legislative and business planning initiatives, become an advocate for local business. It allows you to plan and host special events and charitable fundraisers when you have a lot of time to give, or donate a raffle prize when time is limited. Most importantly, though, membership opens the door to relationships you won’t find anywhere else.
That is really what the Chamber is about – building relationships that can help you professionally, and bring you a great deal of personal satisfaction, too. While you are building those relationships, you and other members are laying the foundation for the future of business in our area.
For more than a 80 years, the Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce has provid-ed programs, events, research, and relationships with key nonprofits and gov-ernments to support the local business community. The Chamber serves as a catalyst to build stronger, cross-sector partnerships and provide voice, insights, and connections that strengthen the intersections of business and community. Through our informational luncheons, networking mixers, presentations from business and community leaders, and connections to local, state, and federal , the Chamber continues to help businesses and individuals make a difference.
The Chamber has been the organization local businesses have turned to in good times and in tougher times. We continue to promote “it’s good business to do business with Chamber members” and to shop local in general. Our Chamber will continue to be committed to supporting our businesses and com-munities. By working together and joining hands to create a successful and purposeful business climate, we can move forward and prosper.
We invite you to take your Chamber involvement to the next level. Please con-sider using your enthusiasm and expertise to forward our goals as a mem-ber of one of these important Chamber committees: Business and Education, Government Affairs, Ambassador Committee, and the Tourism and Informative Luncheon Committee.
On behalf of the Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, I thank you for your continued support and look forward to working with you to pro-mote, grow and sustain a diverse and healthy business community.
Come join us and help our community to grow and thrive!

AROMAS — Renzo Lombardi
got behind the wheel of a gigantic
Caterpillar 777D Tuesday, rolling
into the work zone at the A.R. Wil-
son Quarry in Aromas. Once he arrived, he then hopped
into a Krupp rock crusher, and after
he finished, he checked out the
quarry’s truck repair shop to make
sure that everything was in order.
Not exactly a typical day for a
3-year-old cancer survivor.
The Seaside resident got the
chance to live his dream thanks to
Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area and
Graniterock of Watsonville.
Graniterock Community Rela-
tions Director Rose Ann Woolpert
said Tuesday marked the first time
the company was asked to host a
Make-A-Wish event. “It’s as much of a gift for us as it
is for the family,” she said.
Renzo, who had a tumor re-
moved from his kidney a year ago,
was pronounced cancer-free in
December. His fascination with toy trucks,
tools and diggers began when he
was 10-months-old, said his mother
Crystal Lombardi, and has had an
“unbelievable imagination and fas-
cination” with “Mighty Machines,”
a DVD set that shows heavy equip-
ment machines. Renzo can also identify nearly every
tool in his father Vince’s toolbox, and
often helps Vince work on his motor-
cycle. “This was an amazing therapy
for both of them,” Crystal Lombardi
said. Tuesday began with a big rig
transfer truck picking up Renzo at
his Seaside home. Once he entered
the quarry, where a lighted digital
sign greeted him, Renzo suited up
in a hard hat and vest. But the day’s surprises were just
beginning. “I saw a dump truck!” he ex-
claimed as a Caterpillar 777D
rolled into the parking lot, dwarf-
ing even the largest dump trucks
in the area. Renzo and his family received a
proclamation from the San Benito
County and Monterey County
Boards of Supervisors, declaring
July 8 as “Renzo Lombardi Day” at
the A.R. Wilson Quarry.

“It’s a fun event that makes for a

CAPITOLA — The famed Rispin Mansion of
Capitola has just gotten a major financial boost,
a $383,925 state grant that will be used to fix up
surrounding gardens and paths.
Since the six-acre site is owned by the City of
Capitola, officials there plan to make up the rest of
a $600,000 tab to restore the mansion’s garden and
redefine the property trails, Steve Jesberg, public
works director, said. The Mediterranean 1920s home, which has
long been shuttered, is situated behind a towering
wall off of Wharf Road and the property features
a switchback trail that serves as a heavily used
conduit for pedestrians and bicyclists between
Wharf Road and Bay Avenue.
“We don’t anticipate the public will be able to go
into the mansion once we are done,” Jesberg said.
“Our improvements will enable the public to walk
around one side of the mansion.”
The project also calls for widening pathways
and restoring a large fountain.
The project will take two to three years, Jesberg
said. While actual groundwork will take about a year to

When and why did the railroad come to Santa Cruz County? Who built it? What has been its impact and what will it mean to our future? Even the short version will take some time to tell so this story will be told in three separate monthly installments.
Setting the stageIn the early days, travel between
Monterey and Santa Cruz might be by foot, horse, ox cart or buggy. Crossing any of the 20 creeks, gullies and sloughs in Santa Cruz County meant that you had to find a way from the high coastal plain down through the stream bed and up the other side. Many were impassible in winter. At that time Aptos was a large cattle ranch

APTOS — The Soquel Creek Water District Board of Directors will consider declaring a groundwater emergency and moratorium on projects during a public hearing June 3.
Before that meeting, however, the board allowed Twin Lakes Church to move forward with its campus redesign on April 29, reversing a decision made nearly a month ago.
The board voted 3-1 to grant the church with a conditional will-serve letter. The letter, while it doesn’t guarantee water service, states that certain requirements have been met and advances the process to receive service.
Vice President Bruce Daniels dissented. Director Bruce Jaffe, while attending the meeting on the phone as he was traveling to the East Coast, was unable to vote because a flight delay prevented him from being in his hotel room, where he was listed on the agenda.

APTOS — Some eight years before they will receive their high school diplomas, nearly 3,000 Santa Cruz County fourth-graders on May 9 began to plan their time at college.
The kids, who came to Cabrillo College’s Aptos campus, were taking part in the third annual Santa Cruz County College Commitment Samper Fourth Grade
Experience, also known as S4C. The event was designed to give young people a taste of college life by a visit to the campus, complete with classroom tours.
“It’s a perfect experience,” said Pajaro Valley Unified School District Superintendent Dorma Baker. “Students see a campus and start thinking, ‘this is something I can do.’ It gets them in the right mindset.”

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — Santa Cruz County fire officials are bracing for a busy fire season, which will be made worse by the ongoing drought and a difficult budget.
The grim message by Cal Fire San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit Chief Scott Jalbert to the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors came May 6 after record low rainfall statewide has emergency responders preparing for “significant wildfire potential.”
Crews that fought fires during a
moderate drought last year are now facing extreme drought conditions, with a fire season shaping up to be the worst since 1977, which is considered the worst in history, Jalbert said.
That will mean that crews will be stretched as they respond to the fires, making staffing difficult.
The conditions are made worse by an abundance of dry trees and shrubs, and by dried grasses that sprouted after late winter rains, all of which will act as fuel should a fire start, Jalbert said.
“It sets the stage for once we

CAPITOLA — The fi rst-ever Open Streets event in Capitola proved to be a success, organizers said.
The Capitola City Council reviewed the event on June 12.
About 6,500 attended the event on May 4, which also coincided with the opening of the new 220-space Beach and Village Parking Lot 2, said Director Saskia Lucas.
Described as a “pop-up” park, the event closed the Esplanade from Stockton to Monterey avenues for vehicle traffi c, which allowed people to bike, walk and play on the street while taking part in free activities and musical performances.
“It really transformed that space from essentially a parking lot area to a public park,” Lucas said.
Lucas put in a total of 690 hours to make the event happen, which included community outreach, coordinating with Capitola Village residents and merchants, promotion and other planning. In addition, 40

CAPITOLA — The City of Capitola received a commitment from Ozzi Dog Park, Inc. for $8,000 to fully fund the new dog park to be built on McGregor Drive.
Ozzi Dog Park, Inc is a nonprofi t organization which was recently established in memory of Joshua Laven who was killed in a bike accident in 2012. The Capitola City Council recently authorized a multi-use recreational park at the city-owned McGregor Drive property, located near the entrance to New Brighton State Beach. The new park will have three components; skate park, dog park and bike park.
The plan calls for a 9,500-square-
foot bike pump track on the north end of the property, kids’ play area, seating area visible from all locations, a 10,300-square-foot skateboard park fronting McGregor Drive and a 12,500-square-foot dog park located in the rear of the property. Parking for 30 vehicles will be at the southern portion of the lot with a gated entrance.
The city will fund and install the basic infrastructure; ADA accessible paths, porta-potties, water service, parking and fencing. Funding for completing each area, such as skateboard ramps, water fountains, dog park and pump track, was not funded by the city and

WATSONVILLE — The Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds will once again be in bloom this year, with rows of begonias, zinnias and other flowers adding splashes of color to the September fair.
But thanks to the ongoing drought, their numbers will be drastically reduced. While past years have seen upwards of 10,000 seedlings being planted, that number has been reduced to 7,000.
What’s more, the plants will be watered via
drip irrigation, which is thought to be more efficient, said organizer Dave Schnitter.
A group of volunteers on Thursday, June 26, was at the grounds, trowels in hand, placing the seedlings into soil. The planting has become an annual tradition.
Another planting took place on July 17.A retired teacher, former 4-H member and
lifelong Corralitos resident, Stephanie Bulich said she attends the fair every year.

GREENFIELD — South Monterey County Farmers Markets are underway as of July 5. Clothing vendors, produce vendors, food vendors and green product
vendors came to showcase their goods on El Camino Real.
“I think this is the first time we’ve had it after being inactive for two years,” said Michael Muniga, Chamber of Commerce director. “For the first time in two years, it’s
actually going pretty well. I’m going to start recruiting more vendors in the next week or so that way we can grow this.”
Muniga said the Farmers Market has a lot of support from the City of Greenfield. Greenfield Police officers and explorers provided security for the event.
Vendors for the event ranged from clothing vendors, to snow cone vendors, to solar lights, restaurant vendors and tea/coffee and green product vendors. One such vendor was Cecilio Zaragoza, an independent Ganolife representative.
Ganolife is a tea and coffee product that contains more than 150 anti-oxidants, 200 photo nutrients and has anti-tumor effects. It comes in different flavors like latte,
mocha, cappuccino with caramel and hazelnut and vanilla, and tea.
“I’ve noticed that in children I’ve seen before, it’s help them boost up their immune system and just more energy throughout the day so they’re well nutrified,” said Zaragoza.
The Farmers Market also showcased different types of solar lights from motorcycles, to dogs and fire hydrants to red peppers. Patrons could also get their fill of beans and different assortments of nuts.
South County Farmers Markets are every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you are interested in a booth call Michael Muniga at the City of Greenfield. The market will run until Aug. 30.

WATSONVILLE — Pajaro Valley berry farmer John E. Eiskamp was named Farmer of the Year Thursday, June 26, at the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau’s 97th annual Meeting and Dinner.
Eiskamp currently serves on the Santa Cruz Farm Bureau, and is past president of the organization. He was born in Palo Alto in 1960, but moved to Indiana as a young boy. He spent summers in Watsonville where he worked for both his grandfathers’ farms. That experience would later inspire him to enter a life of farming.
He serves on the Ad Hoc Funding Committee for the Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency and is active in local water issues. He was also an advocate in the fight to defeat Measure T.
Eiskamp launched J.E. Farms in 1988, and grows raspberries and blackberries.
“It’s very nice to be recognized by your peers,” he said of the award.
Eiskamp made a brief statement in which he talked of his lifelong career, but

ATASCADERO — With steadily increasing summer temperatures and an ongoing drought in the region, Atascadero City Manager Rachelle Rickard says the city expects Atascadero Lake to be completely dry soon and the low water levels are leading to complaints from residents around the lake.
At the June 24, City Council meeting Rickard said the city has received numerous complaints about unpleasant odors coming from the lake and an increase in the amount of mosquitos in the area.
“Our realistic options for dealing with the unpleasant odors are limited, she said, adding that most of the foul odors are coming from decaying algae and other plant matter. “It’s a very natural process, but unfortunately it does cause an odor at times.”
Rickard says the city has also added mosquito dunks to the water in an effort to control the mosquito population in the area. The mosquito dunks release a chemical into the water that is deadly to mosquito larvae, but not harmful to humans or other animals.
Rickard says that city crews are now cleaning up dead fish from the shores of the lake on a daily basis, but are no longer able to use a boat to retrieve dead fish from the lake itself due to the fact that the waters are now too shallow to accommodate a boat.
