“Couëlle and Laplante celebrate kisses, be they big or small, quick or “slurpy.” Both the writing and artwork have a sweetly haphazard quality—Laplante’s scraggly illustrations look authentically kid-drawn, the meter of Couëlle’s verse varies wildly and she sneaks in a few extemporaneous unrhymed moments.” —Publishers Weekly

“A rhyming celebration of kisses of all kinds... A full range of relationships are represented here—parents, grandparents, couples, friends are all happily smooching.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Couëlle’s gentle reminders of the magic of kisses are simply and poetically rendered... Jacques Laplante’s illustrations are the perfect mix of vibrant colour and black lines that enhance the playfulness of Couëlle’s story...[A] wonderful gift book...”—CM Magazine

Award-Winning Author

Kari-Lynn WintersIllustrated by Award-winning Artist

Dean GriffithsWho says a pirate can’t be fancy AND brainy?

In Bad Pirate, unlikely buccaneer Augusta Garrick proved that integrity pays off, even when it means running against the pack. In Good Pirate, the sea pup is still under pressure to fit in, this time by abandoning her love for fancy things. After all, says her father the captain, a good pirate must be rotten, sneaky, and brainy. But is there really any reason a pirate can’t be sneaky, brainy, and fancy? When the rest of the crew is captured by Captain Fishmonger’s mangy pirate cats, Augusta gets the chance to show just what a well-dressed, sweet-smelling, clever pup can do.

With swashbuckling energy and satisfying pirate dialogue, Kari-Lynn Winters has written a sequel worthy of Bad Pi-rate’s popular and critical success. Dean Griffiths brings personality to every crewmember, telling stories within stories through his richly detailed illustrations. A treasure for any landlubber who knows you can’t judge a mind by its cover.

Kari-Lynn Winters is an author, poet, and performer. With over sixteen picture and poetry books published, she has won the British Colum-bia Book Prize silver medal twice, for Jeffrey and Sloth and On My Walk, and been nominated numerous times for the Christie Harris Illustrated Children’s Literature Prize and the Chocolate Lily Awards. Her recent picture book Bad Pirate has been a popular and critical success, and the recipient of a Kirkus Star. Kari-Lynn loves being in the classroom and now teaches drama in education at Brock University. She lives in St. Catharines, Ontario.

Dean Griffiths is a popular picture book artist with more than 25 titles to his name. His many awards include the Christie Harris Illus-trated Children’s Book Prize for Maggie Can’t Wait and the Chocolate Lily Award for Ballerinas Don’t Wear Glasses. His most recent picture book, Bad Pirate, received a starred review from Kirkus Reviews, which said, “Griffiths’ art takes the wave-swept narrative to another level.” Dean lives in Duncan, British Columbia, with his daughter.

Award-winning Author

Julie PearsonIllustrated by Award-winning Artist

Manon GauthierA gentle, warmhearted story of one child’s journey through the foster care system in search of a “forever, forever” home

Julie Pearson conceived of Elliot, her first picture book, during her first months as an adoptive mother. She has worked as an educator in child and youth centers for over twelve years, and is passionate about children and their development. Julie lives near Sherbrooke, Quebec.

Manon Gauthier is a graphic artist who made the leap to picture book illustration in 2006. After her first book was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award for Children’s Literature, she dedicated herself entirely to illustration, and to giving presentations and art workshops in schools across Quebec. A flexible artist, Manon works in many media, including gouache, pencils, and plasticine. She lives near Montreal.

Elliot’s parents love him, but they do not know how to cope with raising him. One day a social worker named Thomas comes to visit, and Elliot’s world turns upside-down.

Manon Gauthier’s soft collage illustrations feature ap-proachable rabbit characters who display a varied range of emotions. Julie Pearson’s soothing, repetitive text guides Elliot gently through the foster child system. The new fam-ilies that care for the little boy are kind, but everything is

strange and new, and the sudden changes make him want to act out. Then, when it becomes clear that Elliot’s par-ents will never be able to take him back, Thomas sets out to find Elliot one last home—a forever, forever home with a family that will love and care for him no matter what.

Evie Brooks Central Park Showdownin

Evie Brooks is having the time of her life in New York, de-spite having to start her first day of school with a stye on her eye and a skirt so short it shows off her baby giraffe legs. Evie is making new friends—maybe even a boyfriend, although how can you tell whether he’s a boyfriend or just a boy who happens to be a friend? And life with her Uncle Scott continues to be a whirlwind as he adds the Central Park Zoo to his list of vet clients. Once again the practice is inundated with the city’s strangest pets and inmates, including an alpaca named Milly, Eddie the Westipoo, Jax

the snail, and a rabbit named Dr. Pepper that goes walk-about in Central Park. Evie is almost too busy to notice that the father she’s never met has darkened her door and is anxious to make amends and seek custody of her. Well, Evie won’t have any part of that. Nobody is going to separate her from Uncle Scott, not even the courts and a lawyer named Marcy, who claims to be representing Evie’s interests but won’t let her speak. That is just not Evie’s style, and she is determined to find a way to stay with her uncle—with a little help from her friends.

Sheila AgnewA delightful sequel to Evie Brooks is Marooned in Manhattan

Sheila Agnew was born in New York and raised mainly in Dublin, Ireland, with her twin sister and two brothers. Not content to stay in one place, Sheila practiced international law for a number of years around the world before settling back in New York as a family lawyer and a budding author. Her first novel for juvenile readers, Evie Brooks is Marooned in Manhattan, was shortlisted for the Literary Association of Ireland Children’s Book Award.

First Jack and Ollie try the leafy branches. Then a giant kite. Idea after idea, invention after invention, boy and pig drag them all to the top of the highest hill. Then Ollie runs as hard as ever a pig could run, until his trotters lift from the ground and—Crash!

In Sky Pig, Jan Coates weaves a story of sweetness and whimsy, ingenuity and empathy. Plasticine artist Suzanne Del Rizzo brings dimension and energy to the tale of a

pig who wants—against all popular truisms—to fly. He may never reach the sky on homemade clockwork wings, but Ollie still dreams as hard as ever a pig can dream. And Jack, a true friend, realizes that just because a pig can’t fly in the ways they have tried doesn’t mean he can never soar. An uplifting picture book for anyone who has tried and tried again.

Jan L. CoatesIllustrated by

Suzanne Del RizzoA pig who wants to fly. A boy with a knack for invention. An inspiring story of two dreamers winging it.

As a young child, Jan Coates waited eagerly for her first library card. Today, as a critically-acclaimed children’s book writer, she is helping to fill libraries herself. Her young adult novel A Hare in the Elephant’s Trunk was a finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Award and the Ann Connor Brimer Award for Children’s Literature, as well as a USBBY Outstanding International Book. Her middle grade novels have been finalists for the Ann Connor Brimer Award, the Violet Downey Award, and the Hackmatack Children’s Choice Award. In 2015 Jan published The King of Keji, her second picture book. She lives, writes, and teaches in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

Suzanne Del Rizzo has always loved getting her hands messy. She traded her job in scientific research for a career in children’s illustration with her first picture book, Skink on the Brink, which won the SCBWI Crystal Kite Award and was a finalist for the Rainforest of Reading Award. Suzanne’s dimensional illustrations use Plasticine, polymer clay, and other mixed media to bring rich texture and imagination to her books. She lives in Oakville, Ontario.

Andrée PoulinIllustrated by

Anne-Claire DelisleWhen bath time meets the seashore, the result is a sweetly silly father-daughter adventure

Andrée Poulin is the award-winning author of more than thirty books for children. Formerly a journalist, she now enjoys spending much of her time giving workshops for young people in schools and libraries. Andrée lives in Gatineau, Quebec.

Anne-Claire Delisle has been draw-ing her whole life. After studying graphic design at university, she be-came an illustrator for books, maga-zines, and advertising. Today she also teaches illustration at the Cégep de Sainte-Foy in Quebec City.

Going SEA BATHfor a

Leanne’s bath time is boring. It’s annoying. It’s a pain. Luckily, her father has some excellent, terrific, and spectacular ideas to make it more interesting. He runs down to the sea and brings back one turtle. Then two eels. Then three clown fish. Soon Leanne’s bath time is fun! It’s amusing! It’s exciting! But when the ten octopi arrive, could it be too much of a good thing?

Translated from Andrée Poulin’s lively text, Going for a Sea Bath combines the best of a bath time book and a seashore book with a father-daughter adventure that will inspire giggles all around. Anne-Claire Delisle’s whimsical art is delightfully expressive, blending the everyday details of bath time with a fantastical effusion of smiling sea creatures, a charmingly silly father, and one little girl who will never complain about boring bath times again.

Award-winning Author

Karen BassSometimes scared is the smartest thing you can be.

14

Jared’s plane has crashed in the Alberta wilderness, and Kyle is first on the scene. When Jared insists on hiking up the highest hill in search of cell phone reception, Kyle hesitates; his Cree grandmother has always forbidden him to go near it. There’s no stopping Jared, though, so Kyle reluctantly follows. After a night spent on the hilltop—with no cell service—the teens discover something odd: the plane has disappeared. Nothing in the forest surrounding them seems right. In fact, things seem very wrong. And worst of all, something is hunting them.

Karen Bass, the multi-award-winning author of Graffiti Knight and Uncertain Soldier, brings her signature action-packed style to a chilling new subject: the Cree Wîhtiko legend. Inspired by the real story of a remote plane crash and by the legends of her Cree friends and neighbours, Karen brings eerie life—or perhaps something other than life—to the northern Alberta landscape in The Hill.

14

Karen Bass is the multi-award-winning author of a number of novels for young adult readers. Graffiti Knight won the CLA Young Adult Book Award, the Geoffrey Bilson Award for Histori-cal Fiction for Young People, the R. Ross Annett Award, and the CAA Exporting Alberta Award. Her most recent novel, Uncertain Soldier, is a nominee for the OLA Forest of Reading Red Maple Award. Karen lives in Hythe, Alberta, where she was the public library manager for sixteen years before turning to full-time writing.

One little rhino in a mood. Two little rhinos acting rude.

Three little rhinos are having trouble getting along as Mama tries to coax them through the evening routine. Will they fidget, fuss, and fight right up until bedtime? Or will their Mama’s love help them find some common ground?

Victoria Allenby and Tara Anderson, the award-winning author-illustrator team behind Nat the Cat Can Sleep Like That, return with a lively story that will warm the heart of any frazzled parent. Children will find mischievous de-light in the young rhinos’ misbehaviour, told in bouncing rhyme and energetic illustrations. And ultimately they, like the rhino siblings, may be inspired to acknowledge and reward their parents’ patient love.

NEXTROUNDA YOUNG ATHLETE’S JOURNEY TO GOLD

John SprayA timely story of a young refugee and the challenging road that has led him to a shot at the 2016 summer Olympics

18

At the age of three, Arthur Biyarslanov fled with his family from the war-ravaged frontier of Chechnya. Narrowly escaping bullets and a bomb that destroyed the car in front of his fleeing family, Arthur and his brother ran to the border and forded a freezing river to safety. He became a refugee first in Azerbaijan, and ultimately in Canada. In spite of these difficult experiences, and the trials that confront any child refugee in strange lands, Arthur thrived on the discipline and cameraderie of sport, taking up first competitive soccer and then boxing. Years of dedication

and discipline have made him into a champion amateur boxer at age 20, winning the first Pan Am Games gold medal in boxing for Canada in 40 years in 2015 and readying him for the challenges of qualifying for the 2016 summer Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro. Written from extensive interviews with Arthur and his family, Next Round is the story of Arthur’s journey from frightened little boy to confident soccer player and eventually to a world-class amateur boxer.

18

John Spray grew up in the midwestern United States and spent years as a suc-cessful amateur boxer, gym rat and boxing fanatic. He has been a private investi-gator in Toronto for forty years and is the owner and founder of Mantis Investiga-

tion. John also sponsors the annual John Spray Mystery Award for excellence in mystery writing for children.
