THE HORMEL KIDS GAZETTE

Welcome to this very unique publication. Everything you’ll find here was created by kids in the Hormel Foods family. In these challenging times, so many things we once took for granted are now uncertain. But some things remain constant through all of the disruption: the importance of family, and the ability of our youngest family members to lift our spirits and engage our imaginations with their boundless creativity, curiosity and laughter.

This publication is a showcase and celebration of those talents and qualities, and of the tradition of honoring family that we at Hormel Foods hold so dear.

Inside you’ll find activities, essays, illustrations, and some pretty good jokes. This is the second issue! And and there may be more to come with your support and submissions. So as you read, think about contributing to issue #4! You’ll find more information about how you can contribute on the last page. Stay well, stay tuned, and read on.

The 13-hour trip was nearing to a close with only five minutes until they docked the Dragonfruit 500 to the International Space Center of Squirrels. Then all of a sudden, warning lights began turning on in the cockpit. Astronauts De and Slavin looked at each other in alarm. Something was wrong, Nate could tell.

“Nate! We need you to take over the docking of the Dragonfruit 500 while Astronaut Slavin and I check on these alarms.” Said Astronaut De.

Nate was reluctant but finally said “Ok.”Nate was surprised they trusted him so

much, but still took on the controls. He carefully steered the spacecraft to the docking door of the International Space Center of Squirrels while the other two astronauts went to check on the alarms. Just as the other astronauts came back, Nate was in the final stages of docking. The other astronauts watched as Nate successfully docked the spacecraft.

“Great job Nate!” said Astronaut Slavin.

“Thanks. What were the alarms about?” asked Nate.

“Apparently Victoria knocked into some of the equipment and set off the alarms,” said Astronaut De.

Nate rolled his eyes. The doors between the Dragonfruit 500 and the International Space Center of Squirrel opened. Nate was super excited!

“Welcome to the International Space Center of Squirrels! This way please” said a new astronaut.

Nate recognized the voice of the new astronaut. It was his dad! Once in the International Space Center, Nate gave his dad a hug.

“Nate! I’m so proud of you” said Nate’s dad. “Way

to be the youngest squirrel ever in space!”To the other astronauts Nate’s dad said,

“Hi, I’m Astronaut Drew and am also the proud father of Nate!”

The other astronauts shook Astronaut Drew’s hand. Astronaut Slavin said, “Your son is a pretty good astronaut. He docked the Dragonfruit 500 all by himself.”

“Wow Nate. That’s pretty impressive” said Astronaut Drew. “We better get to work unloading the supplies.”

The astronauts unloaded the supplies brought up on Dragonfruit 500. When they were done Astronaut Slavin explained that Victoria had snuck on board right before liftoff. Astronaut Drew was pretty upset that someone had snuck on the spaceship and agreed that Victoria was to be restricted to the sleeping quarters.

Nate was given a tour of the International Space Center for Squirrels by

his dad. He thought it was pretty cool. After the tour it was time to board the

Dragonfruit 500. Nate gave his dad one more hug before leaving the space center.

As the Dragonfruit 500 pulled away from the International Space Center of Squirrels. Nate waved to his dad through the window as the Dragonfruit 500 headed back to earth.

Nate was amazed so many things had happened since he saw the Space Camp for Squirrel’s sign earlier that year. Nate couldn’t believe it; he had become the youngest squirrel in space!

The end.

Where we left off, Nathan the Squirrel, also known as Nate, had attended Space Camp and won Space Games. Nate then went to train at the Buzz international Space Center. Once he passed his training he was finally ready to be blasted off into space. Nate was in the spaceship Dragonfruit 500 and the countdown began.

Nate was launched into the sky on the Dragonfruit 500. The spaceship was heading up into the edge of the atmosphere. The spacecraft broke through the sound barrier and then they were in outer space! Mission Control sent a transmission to Dragonfruit 500 asking if everything was okay. Astronaut Francis De radioed back stating the crew was okay and the ship was headed to the International Space Center of Squirrels.

Nate’s mind was blown. He didn’t know so many cool things could happen at once. The launch started off pretty rocky but it smoothed out. Now, outside his window he saw the stars. There were so many stars it seemed impossible to see them all at once.

It would be 13 hours until they reached the International Space Center of Squirrels and Nate had a few things he had to do before they got there. Nate first had to make sure the food supplies on the Dragonfruit 500 were ready for transfer. Nate unbuckled to go check on the supplies. As he got back to the storage area, his jaw dropped almost to the ground. There in front of him was Victoria hiding behind some food crates!

“What are you doing here?” Nate asked. Victoria was a girl who Nate competed

against at Space Camp. Victoria’s aunt was also an astronaut and was at Buzz International Space Center when Nate went through his astronaut training.

“Shhh!” Victoria loudly whispered.“You’re not supposed to be here! How did

you get on the spaceship?” Nate asked.

“Shhh!” Victoria said again. Nate shook his head and went to get

Astronaut Josephine Slavin. Nate brought Astronaut Slavin back to the storage area. When Astronaut Slavin saw Victoria, she gasped.

“Young lady, how did you get on this ship? You are not supposed to be here!”

Victoria stumbled over her words. “I, I, I snuck on to the Dragonfruit 500 before launch. I really wanted to go to the International Space Center of Squirrels!”

Astronaut Slavin said, “I’m going to have to radio Mission Control to tell them that you are here and tell your parents where you are. You are in big trouble, young lady!”

Then Victoria said, “No! Don’t tell my parents! They’re on a vacation in the Bahamas. You can’t interrupt them. I will get in big trouble!”

Astronaut Slavin ignored Victoria’s plead and marched over to the radio.

“Come in Mission Control,” Astronaut Slavin said. “I need to report a stowaway. Over.”w

“This is Mission Control. Did you say you had a stowaway? Over.”

“This is Dragonfruit 500. Yes, we have a stowaway. It is Victoria, Astronaut Suzzy Rike’s niece! Over.”

“This is Mission Control. We copy. We will inform Astronaut Rike. Over”

Then Astronaut Slavin said, “Well Victoria, I guess you’ll be coming with us to the International Space Center of Squirrels. But you are restricted to only the sleeping quarters.”

“Okay.” said Victoria and she ran away quickly. Victoria returned a minute later and looked to Nate.

“Nate, which way are the sleeping quarters?” Victoria asked in a whisper.

Nate pointed and said “To your left and down that way.”

“Thanks.” said Victoria as she hurried off.Nate then began sorting the food supplies

for the International Space Center of Squirrels.
