BASIC PAINTING TERMS
•Surface – material to which paint is applied•Canvas•Paper•Wood
![Page 4: PAINTING 101. BASIC PAINTING TERMS Painting – process of applying color to a surface using tools such as a brush, painting knife, roller, or even fingers.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062421/56649d9e5503460f94a88a74/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
THREE BASIC INGREDIENTS OF PAINT
1. Pigments – finely ground colored powders
•Natural Pigments – indigo, a vegetable or the cochineal beetle, an insect•Synthetic Pigments – artificially made from chemicals
![Page 5: PAINTING 101. BASIC PAINTING TERMS Painting – process of applying color to a surface using tools such as a brush, painting knife, roller, or even fingers.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062421/56649d9e5503460f94a88a74/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)

THREE BASIC INGREDIENTS OF PAINT
2. Binder – material that holds together the grains of pigment
• The binder allows the pigment to stick to the painting surface• Egg yolks mixed with water have long been used as a strong binder for artists tempera paint• Other binders are linseed oil and wax

THREE BASIC INGREDIENTS OF PAINT
3. Solvent – liquid that controls the thickness or thinness of the paint
• Achieve different effects depending on the thickness or thinness of the paint• Thinned down watercolor paint gives off a washed out
appearance• Thick watercolor paint gives off an intense
appearance• Solvents can also be used to clean paintbrushes and
other applications

DIFFERENT PAINTING MEDIA
•Oil-based Paint – first used in 1400’s, it remains popular to this day. Oil paint uses linseed oil as its binder and turpentine as it’s solvent•One advantage of oil paint is that it dries slowly, which allows the artist to blend colors right on the canvas

DIFFERENT PAINTING MEDIA
•Water-Soluble Paint – watercolor paint is the most popular water-soluble paint. Its solvent is water and its binder is gum arabic.

DIFFERENT PAINTING MEDIADIFFERENT PAINTING MEDIA
•Gouache is similar to water color but has been modified (has larger particles) to be more opaque. Its binding agent is usually gum arabic. You can add egg yolk to gouache in order to create a tempera like look…or just use tempera…it’s cheaper. Lighter tones tend to dry darker and darker tones lighter.

DIFFERENT PAINTING MEDIA
•Tempera is another; it dries much quicker than oil based paints and has a more opaque finish than water color

DIFFERENT PAINTING MEDIA
•Acrylic paint, which appeared in the 1950’s, uses an acrylic polymer as its binder while its solvent is also water. However, once acrylic paint dries, it cannot be dissolved.
