Sun Rideshare PRSA awardBefore the launch of the Sun Link streetcar, the Tucson Department of Transportation projected that 3,600 passengers would ride the streetcar each day.  The ridership numbers have come in much higher.  On average through September, 4,200 passengers per day ride the streetcar on a given weekday.  That’s a 17percent improvement over the projected numbers. Visit SunLinkstreetcar.com for more information.

In Sun Tran’s Get on Board program, Tucson-area employers sell, subsidize or provide transit passes to their employees to make commuting to work convenient, affordable and stress-free on Sun Tran, Sun Shuttle or the Sun Link streetcar. Interested? Call Pat Richter at 206-8859

In 2003, Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. (Ventana) was rated in Fortune magazine as one of the 100 fastest growing companies. Today, the Oro Valley- based company has over 1,100 employees and is a member of the Roche Group. A leading supplier of cancer diagnostic systems to the anatomical pathology market, Ventana manufactures over 220 cancer diagnostics tests with related automated diagnostic instruments. Over 8 million patients in 90+ countries are diagnosed or monitored with help from Ventana products each year, keeping the company true to their mission to ”improve the lives of all patients afflicted with cancer.”

Ventana employees live throughout southern Arizona, so commuting to Oro Valley can be time consuming and costly. The sustainability

Company Spotlight: Ventana Medical Systems Leads the Way to Sustainabilitycommittee at Ventana, entitled VERDE (Ventana Environmentally Responsible and Dedicated Employees), understands these challenges and encourages employees to use alternative transportation.

One of VERDE’s tools to spread the word is an Alternative Transportation Resources page on the Ventana intranet. Employees can find information about Sun Rideshare, the benefits of carpooling as well as access to a “carpool match” database listing detailed cross street information and ideal work hours in order to identify a carpool group. VERDE holds an annual Earth Week celebration, inviting sustainability-focused vendors, such as Sun Tran and Sun Rideshare, to host informational tables. Additionally, VERDE has held an alternative transportation contest where buildings on their campus compete to see which has the largest percentage of employees using alternative transportation for their commute.

The company also provides financial incentives and special parking spots to employees who carpool and has onsite shower facilities and bike lockers for those who ride their bikes to work. A 2014 pilot program allows certain departments to choose an 80 work week in 9 days, getting every other Friday off. Another incentive allows offsite, remote working—up to 10 days per quarter. Both programs decrease the number of trips taken by employees, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Employer and Commuter Spotlights:

Changing my commute at age 51Six years ago, I was changing jobs and wanted to get into better shape. I bought an inexpensive new hybrid bike and brought it to work on Mondays so I could ride at lunchtime and explore different routes on the weekends. After awhile, my endorphins and I were all in, and I bought a road bike for longer miles and a mountain bike for fun. The lunchtime rides turned into my current commute, 3-4 days a week, utilizing Pima County’s great Loop path system.

Pros and cons of my bike commuteI like biking to and from work because I get a little “Phil-time” to let my mind wander, be creative and plan my day or evening.  I always arrive happy and invigorated, not like the motorists that are sometimes grumpy. The biggest benefit for me is to my health, although I will admit to often taking that extra cookie because I know I’ll bike it off.   The biggest concern I have is inattentive drivers, so if it’s near dusk I light myself up well. As cycling continues to grow in popularity, there

Phil Roper, Mechanical Engineer, Ventana Medical Systemsalso seems to be a growing dislike between motorists and cyclists. I attribute this to the few rotten apples in both bunches, and I do all I can to obey traffic laws and be friendly to motorists to try to help turn this trend around. The money I save by not driving gets reinvested into my bikes. There isn’t much time savings biking vs. driving, but the work out and the relaxing nature of my ride saves me time in other ways.

Why I wear cyclist clothingWhen I started biking I was safe and wore

a helmet, but I never thought I would go all in and wear the cyclist clothes. Then one day while going about 20 mph, a bee flew up my shorts.  I didn’t get stung, but it sure was an exciting 30 seconds. This is one reason why cycling clothes are fit snugly.

Advice for beginnersTalk to people who are already doing it.  We’re a friendly group and everyone will want to help you. Then buy an entry-level bike, build up some endurance and smile the miles. Beyond your commute, join a cycling club or to make new friends.
