Press Information FRANK VAN BOGAERT - NOMADS (CD) Here we have the latest album of Frank Van Bogaert, a concept work of sorts, dedicated to all types of exploring new ground. "Ouverture" starts with deep sounds until dramatic symphonic passages come from the ether and a relaxed, marching rhythm compliments to this solemn piece. "Crack the Blue Sky" comes off as something more overtly electronic, with some sequences and lots of raspy, saw-wave based sounds. Some trademark Frank Van Bogaert textures can be heard as well. The melody that comes a bit later is a bit too "dancey" for my taste perhaps, but the sound design is great as always. The title track has strange sounds and some dramatic string stabs as an introduction. A typical Van Bogaert symphonic theme is the main attraction, although on this album most tracks are a bit less focused (which is actually a good thing in this case) than on previous releases. Anyway, here, Frank's music is as expansive as ever, which probably corresponds to the album's theme. Most cuts so far sound more or less composed and not improvised. However, with "Furious Jam" things change drastically. In total accordance with its title, the track is full of that typical improvisational style of Frank, only this time it's much more upbeat and, well, furious. Certainly the best track so far. I just LOVE it when Frank lets his fingers go up and down the keys, without any or almost any pre-conceived ideas. I also adore those Jazzy / Fusiony bits that are present thanks largely to the use of the electric piano. In total contrast to the previous number, "Aquatopia" calms things down with what sounds like an excellent soundtrack to a documentary about sea explorations. The track sounds improvised and Jazzy, with lots of piano. This is some great music! I am so happy that Frank has chosen to go for the improvisation once again, but you already know how much I love this particular style. By the end of the track a recurring theme appears which is a logical conclusion to this enjoyable journey. "High" has a pronounced rhythm that differentiates this track from the rest. However, the rest is typical Van Bogaert in his composed mode. The theme is good and enjoyable but after the two improvised tracks he left me craving for more. "Mont Blanc" starts like an ambient track. Soon gentle piano notes appear. This is one of those soothing or "sleepy" Van Bogaert tracks that could help you relax after a hard day or perhaps surrender to the reminiscences. "Drive" has underlying sequence that reminded on Jarre's "Arpeggiator". However, it then morphs into quite a danceable track with a steady rhythm and a simple, but effective melody. "Blue Down There" makes you think of images of Earth as seen from space. A wonderful relaxing piece that has no clear melody but is very effective nonetheless. "Ritual" sounds like another improvised piece which I sincerely hope it is. Some heavy synth stabs are supported by an urgent rhythm, as a sequence mutates beneath. I'd say that the piece is half-improvised and half-composed. A very effective composition with excellent sound programming. "Heat" surprises with a lullaby-like electric piano and a subtle sequence. After a while, a two-note melody is introduced, together with a guitar / e-piano improvisation. This is just terrific! This time Frank improvises in a profoundly relaxed way with extremely

interesting results. "Beneath the Ice" starts with a sound of a sonar, until an ambient soundscape takes over. This is one of those rare, totally ambient Frank Van Bogaert tracks. Very immerse and I'd say, chilling. I think that with "Nomads" Frank has proved once again that he is an expert musician in both composing and improvising modes. Making a concept album was a hard task, but Frank managed to put out something which certainly deserves any praise. Best tracks: without a shade of a doubt, "Furious Jam", "Aquatopia", "Ritual" and "Heat". Artemi Pugachov / Russia TANGERINE DREAM - SPRINGTIME IN NAGASAKI (CD) Navel of Light is typical E.Froese fare peppered with a few new sounds. The trouble is, anyone who's familiar with his solo work will, as I did, find themselves predicting each new chord change before it happens. Dull. Persistence of Memory from Thorsten is much better, with three parts that contrast, yet combine to provide a beginning, middle and end of a larger piece. As with Froese's track, however, the music doesn't feel 100% original, drawing a great deal of influence from the old Picture Palace Music tracks. Overall, this album provides enjoyable background music, though it doesn't really demand the listener's attention like Tangerine Dream albums of old. Both composers need to move on and stop quoting their old material. Thorsten can get away with it for a while because not many people are familiar with his Picture Palace Music tracks; Froese, on the other hand, really ought to know better. Score 3/5. Worth buying because you can whip out Persistence of Memory and combine with the good stuff from previous TD eps to make a decent album. Dave S / UK PARALLEL WORLDS - OBSESSIVE SURREALISM (CD) This release from 2007 offers 63 minutes of haunting electronic music. Parallel Worlds is: Bakis Sirros, with John Sirros joining in on one live track. Languid electronics laced with haunting harmonics generate melodies supported by understated e-perc of a bubbling nature. Keyboards provide dreamy chords that are supported by airy textures which exhibit a nocturnal flair. The electronics are generally lighthearted and breezy; even the periodic denser tonalities bear a soft sonic caress. A subtle illbient quality lies buried in this tuneage, but it is not prominent enough to disrupt the overall heavenly nature with any substantial edginess. This glitchy seasoning is carefully implanted in the music in a manner that is almost subliminal, enhancing the tuneage with a ghostly charge, crackling in a fashion that is sedate and un intrusive. This fusion of contemporary EM and crackling Techno gives the music a highly intriguing sound that is quite appealing. The rhythms are equally soothing, providing a calm propulsion rather than a driving beat presence. Some of the tempos gurgle as if resounding from underwater or perhaps deep inside a cloud of glutinous gas. It's almost as if the percussives were generated by organic machinery. These compositions display a distinctly celestial quality, ethereal yet sturdily crafted with body. The melodies consist of keyboards thriving in a textural medium, gentle riffs surrounded by cottony expanses of bewitching disposition. Matt Howarth / Sonic Curiosity ROBERT SCHROEDER - BRAINCHIPS (CD) An artist with a wide trajectory and well deserved merits, Robert Schroeder flies over musical continents, as suggested by the title of

this work, inspired by the capacity that the human brain has to imagine. The music flows from Synth-Pop, to a kind of Trip-Hop with an electronic taste, and Space Music. The pieces have complex orchestrations and electronic textures. Rhythms are plentiful. The melodies tend to be bright, brimming with vitality and optimism, although they also enter areas of mystery and subtle melancholy during some of the passages. Brainchips, in conclusion, shows us a Robert Schroeder who has embraced new musical trends with ease and confidence, although without abandoning the essence of his very personal style. Edgar Kogler OMNI - MERMAIDS (CD) Apparently Omni Polish musicians Merceli Latoszek and Rafal Blazejewski plus noises by Gerard Sawicki - are known for electronic rock having been active in this scene in the mid to late 1980s. Mermaids is their first album after a hiatus of nearly twenty years. The press release makes a comparison to the dance-metal in the vein of Rammstein. Besides the keyboards and synths the album also features cello, one that sounds synthetic, plus guitars and vocals on the first track “Aglaophone”. Rousing keyboards and guitar reminiscent of Axess/Maxxess start the album on “Aglaophone”. In the next track “Anai” the synthetic cello makes a melodic appearance amidst percussion and electronic rhythms. Finishing off the album is the longest track “Parthenope” clocking in at over twenty three minutes. This is a change to what's gone before as it starts off as a musical mystery where various washes and drones take turns in the soundscape and a variety of created and found sounds like animalistic vocals, tolling bells, and ocean surf play out. Further in a introspective piano melody slowly builds up to a fulfilling sequencing section using what I think are piano style notes. I've encountered only a few electronic rock albums and I'm happy to say that Mermaids has reinvigorated my interest in it. Nearly having some of the power found in Helmut Teubner's music it's got the vitality of rock coupled with electronic rhythms and melodies that could have one reaching for the air keyboard or guitar. Dene Bebbington AGITATION FREE - MALESCH (CD) Agitation Free was an early-wave Krautrock band of the extended jamming persuasion. A notable pedigree of musicians at one point or another passed through their ranks, including Christopher Franke and Michael Hoenig of Tangerine Dream, and Lutz Ulbrich of Ash Ra. Malesch, the band's debut, was recorded after a trip to Egypt. The Middle Eastern influence brought back from this sojourn courses through the veins of the music, with live banter and incidental music recorded in Cairo serving as a link between tracks. However, after reading several reviews proclaiming its greatness from the rafters, I walked away from this quite under whelmed. I find it hard to get worked up over anything on here. Actually, the performances are astonishingly lukewarm. There is nothing that distinguishes the jamming from that of myriad bands that similarly thrived in the Era of Peace. When the band gets 'experimental,' such as the synthesizer manipulation of "Pulse," this sounds more like piffling around then the divine surge of cosmic revelation. The need of a well-developed composition to really reach in and grab hold of the listener's guts remains unmet. There are moments that hint at potential, such as the piece "Rücksturz" which the band also presented on their live album Last in equally brief form. Ultimately, though, this remains just potential and not crystallization. Given its considerable reputation, I unfortunately must conclude this is a

rather overrated album. Joe McGlinchey SAUL STOKES - WASHED IN MERCURY (CD) Washingtonian Saul Stokes certainly exhibits his musical diversity with the release of his debut album on Portland's Hypnos Records. "Washed in Mercury" ranges from the ambient drones favored by experimental fans to more rhythmic selections that share more in common with modern Industrial. The one thing this album certainly doesn't hold a candle to is the darkness of both aforementioned genres. In fact, most of the music on the album is startlingly upbeat and almost happy. This is not to confuse the music with say such genres as Synth-Pop, because it's not, but rather to state that chosen musical elements contain a very bright, organic mood to them as opposed to a dark, metallic sound favored by most Industrial artists. The album also contains absolutely no vocals, instead Saul has chosen to work within the framework he knows best, namely expansive instrumental compositions. One item unique to this record is that each track on the album is of sufficient length to cross many musical genres with it's time span. This allows each composition to flow and wander into whatever direction it desires, which is something not seen very often, but is a certain sign of talent. Hopefully Saul Stokes will continue down the path laid out by "Washed in Mercury", because it certainly is a stellar piece of work for a debut album. Sonic Boom ROBERT RICH - ECHO OF SMALL THINGS (CD) Inspired by the photography of David Agasi, whose sultry sepia tones adorn the booklet, Robert Rich brings us Echo of Small Things, his latest musical exploration of the human element. “Pathways” sets the tone early introspective, minimal, muted. Footsteps crunching in the soil. Feathery light synths. Birds chirping in the background. Dark underpinnings of otherworldly sounds. Metallic drones. All at soft levels and subtly blended together into a unique sound world, the kind that Robert seems to create regularly with ease. The mood darkens as it fades into the next track, “Fences.” A mournful wail, probably from his lap guitar, adds to the somber proceedings. “Circle Unwound” rumbles like thunder, crashes like rain, crackles like fire, and generally captivates. “Passing Terrain” swirls in a vertiginous manner before settling out into a smooth floater as low drones lay across bright trills of sound above. Each track creates its own little sonic universe, usually with a key element or two that defines it, such as crickets and flutes in “Scent of Night Jasmine.” Rich does a wonderful job of keeping the overall tone low key, the timbre soft, the feeling just a bit on edge. Echo of Small Things is a brilliantly understated work full of nuance. Phil Derby / Electroambient Space STEVE ROACH - POSSIBLE PLANET (CD) As adventurous as Steve Roach has been over the past two-plus decades, I was still wholly unprepared for the brave new trail he blazes on Possible Planet. Done entirely on analog modular instruments, with no keyboards, no midi, no soft synths, Steve has created a singular vision, an oozing, organic biography of a truly alien world never before seen or heard. The unusual, vaguely unsettling photography by Michele Wortman is a perfect parallel to the music contained within the strangely compelling packaging. Three long tracks meander through murky tunnels, damp musty corners, and bubbly green-black pools. “First Murmer” is loaded with deep resonant drones than slowly expand and contract. Eerie clicking sounds mark the transition point to track two, “Gestation.” The clicking reminds me of the frightening invisible

alien from the movie Predator, hiding among the trees in the jungle. The drones go deeper and take on a more metallic timbre as the ominous clicking resurfaces. It is like a stark nightmare version of The Magnificent Void. But sometimes when we wake up from a nightmare, instead of being frightened we can say, “wow, that was really cool,” and we are more excited than afraid by the stirring of our imagination with bold new images. Such is the case here. “Cell Memory” is a little brighter, more electronic than the very organic sounds preceding it, although the gurgly clicking remains. As the swirls of pure space sounds emerge, we move closer into familiar space territory, similar in feel to Michael Stearns classic Planetary Unfolding on the mighty Serge modular synthesizer. It becomes more relaxed and once again organic in the final floating minutes. It is exhilarating exploring Steve Roach’s Possible Planet. Phil Derby / Electroambient Space GERT EMMENS - THE TALE OF THE WARLOCK (CD) This album presents a cosmic epic narrated with the peculiar musical language of this artist. By making a lavish use of synthesizer orchestrations, and resorting to very effective combinations of chords, Gert Emmens succeeds in delighting us with a show of beauty and violence, like those inherent to Fire, Thunder or any of the other natural elements unleashed. The touches of Synth-Pop, Jazz, and melodic symphonism add warmth to a work inherently shaped by means of powerful feelings. Edgar Kogler CONRAD SCHNITZLER - CONVICTION (CD) This release from 2006 offers 60 minutes of bewitching electronic music. Schnitzler's customarily quirky electronics undergo a stately, almost haunting transformation with this release. His erratic and urgent bloops and unexpected direction changes are present, but immersed in a fluid stream that enhances their eccentricity by placing them in stark contrast with flowing surroundings. Determination rises through the shimmering pastiche, resulting in tuneage of a compelling nature. Cybernetic outbursts flutter through the mix with birdlike personality as auxiliary electronic pulses chitter and warble from all sides, dogging the harmonic nucleus with their diverse expressions. Muted percussives rumble from a far distance, providing an expansive feel to the churning foundation. Keyboards are employed some of the time, but the majority of the electronics are triggered by dials, establishing an unpredictable motif for the music's temperament. These whimsical elements coalesce with remarkable ease, achieving a mesmerizing cohesion brimming with enchanting appeal. Inventive diodes often provide synthetic rhythms, harnessing strange noises into non-impact tempos that waft just underneath the compositions' central threads. Synthesized cello and orchestral strings lend a classical undercurrent that roots the songs with a touch of humanity submerged in a sea of modern design. While frequently uplifting and bouncy, these compositions possess a dire sensibility full of subtle portends and burgeoning tension. Matt Howarth / Sonic Curiosity DAVE FULTON & GILLES REAVES - THE RANGE (CD) Dave Fulton and Giles Reaves met at the "Different Skies" festival. The two of them hit it off musically and, after nearly four years of collaboration, their CD The Range was produced. Why did it take four years? The answer is as complex as the inspiration behind the music. Many of the songs were written during heightened emotional periods as intricate life matters intertwined with the creative process. More

practical concerns, such as proximity to one another, provided interesting fodder for collaboration as well. Songs began as single cells, then flew back and forth over the Internet until they had grown into complex organisms. The ability to let go of a pre-conceived outcome allowed the true spirit of collaboration to fertilize the ideas. A decision from the start allowed for any instrument, tool or feeling to propel each song. The duo's ability to deal with the technical aspects of a long distance collaboration helped immensely but soon it became necessary to meet and finish the recordings side-by-side. The summer of 2006 allowed the basic overdubs to be completed in Salt Lake City. Afterwhich, long distance mix down began. The result is a diverse but cohesive collection of songs that range from Ambient to Progressive Rock, and incorporate influences from Tribal to Electronica to New Age. Press Information AUSTERE - PULSE (CDR) Pulse, our first release for 2007 e.v. and on Hypnos' "Secret Sounds" series, is the last of our three ambient-styled minimalistic compositions that include Brainwave Encoding to help create certain states of mind. Our first Minimalist composition was released in 1998 e.v. called " Convergence", followed by the 2004 e.v. release of "Eco", and now the final release of the series, "Pulse". They are all Minimalist compositions following the tenants of Steve Reich's " Music as a Gradual Process" (1968) but are also enhanced with what is known as "Brainwave Encoding" to help create an effect on the listener's mental state. Each composition was arranged using a technique Reich called "phasing", where each discrete piece of music, or "phrase", is allowed to overlap the same or similar phrases but slightly, almost unperceptively out of sync in time with the original, creating a slowly evolving recording that changes subtly but perceptively over its entire course. As Reich wrote: "To facilitate closely detailed listening a musical process should happen extremely gradually." All three releases are designed to be played at normal or quiet levels, and are meant to be looped or played on repeat, with each piece slowly building up from near silence, growing to a quiet crescendo, and subsiding back to a whisper, only to quietly begin again. This and the other two cds are also designed to help put the listener into various "mind states" using a processing technique known as Brainwave Encoding, accentuated by mild and unnoticeable bi-aural panning to create constructive and destructive interference in such a way as to create spatial sound characteristics so that the brainwaves should be somewhat effective even without the use of headphones, although it is most effective with them. These recordings are best enjoyed using headphones if possible. " Convergence", was encoded with theta waves from 4-7 Hz is designed to help the listener obtain "high beta" states, to induce a feeling of calm, peace, and relaxation, to enhance meditation or contemplation, and create a relaxed state. "Eco", is meant for an entirely different purpose. It is meant to be played quietly when going to sleep, and should help lull the listener into a relaxed state, and then into various deep sleep-related phases of brain patterns, in particular the "deep delta" state, which is when R.E.M. sleep, part of the most restful, occurs. It should help bring the listener out of the "alpha" state which is not restful but active and taxing, and back into "theta" and "deep delta" levels. Finally, "Pulse" is encoded with alpha waves along with subtle bi-aural panning, and is designed to create a state of relaxed concentration and facilitate creative activity. It is in many ways the

opposite of "Eco", in that it could actually make it difficult to sleep, and rather create an atmosphere of creativity and inspiration while it is playing. Again, it works best while listened to headphones, but can be very effective without, listened to in repeat/looped mode at quiet volumes. Our hope is that these compositions can be enjoyed on either or both levels: as true Minimalist compositions, written by composers who are very dedicated to the genre and have studied it for over 20 years each, and/or as aids in using music as a way to create an atmosphere, just like the choice of lighting, burning incense or scented candles, and any other way one can try to appeal to the sense of smell, sight, and sound in order to help put one into a certain state of mind. If you, the listener, can appreciate this or any of these recordings in either way, then we feel our goal has been achieved, and we are pleased that you are able to find the wonder and enjoyment in each of them as we have ourselves. Press Information MIKE GRIFFIN - SUDDEN DARK (CD) Mike Griffin has finally seen fit to bless his own record label with the release of his own solo material. Of course, he contributed a great deal to the Viridian Sun release a few month back, but this time around he is the sole producer of the Ambient warbling that graces "Sudden Dark". For the most part, all of the material on this release consists of dark Ambient drones, whorls, atmospheres, and other oddities. Each piece envelops the listener with its complex and thickly woven strings and bass. While "Sudden Dark" should appeal to Ambient and Drone fans alike, it also should appeal to those fans of some of the more New Age artists such as Steve Roach, Jeff Greinke, or Vidna Obmana due to the similarity of composition style, texture, tone, and depth. Overall, one achieves a very serene and surreal mood from listening to this release and that alone is sufficient reason to acquire it, simply as a musical device to relieve the daily stresses we all are placed under. Sonic Boom LUSTMORD - RISING (CD) Recorded live at the 666 Sintennial Convergence at the Center for Inquiry in Los Angeles, CA on 6/6/06, these dark soundscapes will transport you into another dimension where demonic creatures beckon, and amorphous ominous shadows grow to titanic proportions. The Gate was opened wide on this dreaded date, as the superstitious energy was redirected for our purposes and into our celebrations. Decompression prepares one to transcend the boundaries of this world, suspend disbelief, and allow the archetypes to project forth from the deepest abyssal recesses of the imagination. The Infernal Trinity of bestial sentiment is stimulated as this malefic music progresses; Lust, Anger, and Compassion are the keys to the nether regions within, plunging deeply to access the core of being. One perceives the elements rising forth, intimately blending with the humanimal that is man, in his most primal and Magical state. Light the candles, and experience the aural darkness spawned straight from Hell, and feel the thrall of an authentic Satanic Ritual surrounding you. Regal and omnipotent. Lustmord is our musical guide along the corridors of the Pit, where monstrous visions appear to enthrall and edify. Draconis Blackthorne MANUEL GöTTSCHING - E2 E4 (CD) 1984, “E2-E4” is released for the first time, after having spent three full years in Manuel Göttsching’s vault. The reactions in his native

Germany are mostly devastating.An editor of the “Audio” magazine claims that even watching two chess players think is more exciting than this record, another calls it “banal, boring and uninspired”, while influential local weekly “Zitty” passes an even more unmerciful judgement: “There is no excuse whatsoever for this album”. 25 years later, it will be considered as one of the greatest and most influential pieces of music of the 20th century. By now, you can be sure that entire diploma theses have been written about “E2-E4” on top of it being called the true point of departure for Techno, trance and chill out, avantgarde ensembles performing cover versions, while established and renowned newspapers are penning philosophical analyses in its honor. If one thing has remained the same over all these years it must be that “E2-E4” leaves everybody with an opinion only difference being that by now everybody has come to love it. Under the umbrella of two ecstatically repeated chords, a rubbery bass line, floating guitar licks, razor sharp percussion loops and tiny shifts in the accompanying sequencer patterns, ravers and intellectuals can share an unlikely space to meet and dance together. There was not a single moments in its existence, when this album was truly in the limelight the way other classics were. From an underdog position, it developed a magnetic pull, whispering instead of screaming and drawing in more and more devotees until it had turned into a phenomenon of mass culture by and in itself. And because it had nothing to do with trends and calculated hipness, listeners could always discover it for themselves, regardless of whether they bought their first copy in 1984 or late 2006, when Göttsching’s own record label issued this wonderful anniversary edition on the exact day the piece was composed. Not a single new note of music is to be heard, this is neither a remix, nor a reworking, nor does the CD feature any bonus tracks. The sole addition consists in an extensive article printed on the inside of the digipak. And yet, to read Göttsching himself write about his masterpiece’s genesis, his initial skepticism and that anecdote of Richard Branson rocking his baby daughter to sleep before smiling and prophecising that Göttsching could “make a fortune with this record”, is worth its purchase alone. You discover new details constantly: That the bass drum does not pound with 4 beats to the floor in each bar but only three, and that there is the sound of something like an electric kettle boiling over placed subtly in the back, which is mainly responsible for the enormous tension, endorphines gushing out and the rush of adrenalin which permeates this maddeningly hypnotic hour-long session of “pretty damn good playing around”, for example. But each time you think you've heard it all, there are more surprises. That, of course, is part of the ongoing appeal of “E2-E4”: The game is still far from over. Tobias Fischer SYNERGY - SEMI-CONDUCTOR RELEASE 2 (2-CD) A revised and expanded version of the original Synergy retrospective from 1984, Semi-Conductor, Release 2 includes over two hours of synthesizer works recorded between 1975 and 1986. The music is some of the most evocative and intriguing to come from the '70s synthesizer boom, including potential novelty tracks -- like covers of "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" and "Classical Gas" -- that are barely recognizable after Fast focuses on his fast-moving, polyphonic arrangements that use a variety of modules by Moog, Oberheim and Prophet. The Synergy sound remained surprisingly unchanged into the '80s, though the addition of a standard drum kit on tracks from 1979's Games. Though it may be difficult for listeners to separate the music of Synergy from the synthesizer excesses of contemporary prog-rock ensembles, Semi-Conductor includes a host of important electronic recordings.
