    Satire Notes

Satire The use of sarcasm, irony, or wit to attack or ridicule a habit, idea, or

    custom

Satire is a literary genre which features strong irony and/or sarcasm, which is

often voiced as professing approval and acceptance of the ideas which the satirist

    is actually attacking.

While satire is meant to be funny, the greater purpose is social criticism,

using wit and humor as a weapon. The idea is to show the vices, abuses andshortcomings and hold them up to ridicule, with the intent of shaming individuals

    and society into improvement.

    Colloquial Language

Huck Finn has many instances of colloquial language, this is the use of a local

dialect of a certain time and place.

    Hyperbole

Hyperbole exaggerated statements are used throughout this novel. Be on

the lookout for them. This serves to let us see the outlandishness of the story.

Twain uses hyperbole as a technique to exaggerate the events of the novel

for comic effect and for the situations to flow.
