Happy Summer from SESSC Executive Director Lynda GreeneThis is a season when things often slow down a bit in Seattle and at our Center, but not this year!

We are revitalizing our Center since we are now an independent senior center having severed our affiliation with Sound Generations. I am so proud of our staff and community. To tell you the truth, it has not been an easy transition.

The board of directors, staff, and our volunteers have worked extremely hard since we became independent. We are devoting much of our time and energy on finding additional funding for our Center. Most recently we submitted a proposal to King County for $80,000. If we are awarded the grant, we will be able to replace the 30 year old Social Hall floor, the broken pull-down window in the kitchen area, provide additional social services and improve the infrastructure by bringing back My Senior Center to improve tracking activity attendance, which is crucial for funding.

The services offered by our Social Worker are becoming increasingly important because we serve not only our members, but also seniors in our community. We are committed to responding to community needs. That’s what our Center is all about…helping seniors in need of services and support.

In addition, we keep the fun happening at SESSC! Just the other day, we saw a member engage with a very young volunteer – it was a joy to see the communication spanning the years. I have also seen seniors participating in all kinds of great activities in ways that would really surprise their families. You can never assume a senior’s capabilities.

We hope you take some time to check out the contents of this newsletter and share it with someone who might benefit from it. We all need to stay active. We know this first-hand. This is why we are offering activities that are relevant to all kinds of needs and interests. Check it out, come on in, and surprise yourself by trying something new.

PS: Please remember to sign up for our Monthly Pledge Program because we need your financial support. It’s easy to do so check with Alexander Arceo, our Membership Coordinator, for details.

Through study that focuses on helping older adults with depression, I became certified as a Problem Solving Treatment Psychotherapist. Problem Solving Treatment or PST is an evidence-based therapy proving to help older adults with depression. Through nine weekly sessions, you work with your therapist on breaking down problems into achievable action steps. By the end of the nine weeks, the goal is for the participant to have gained the skills to help with their problems. Solving one’s problems can be directly linked to a decrease in symptoms of depression. Many seniors experience symptoms of depression, and PST can be one way to help make a change in your life. Interested? See social worker for more information.

ATTENTION VOLUNTEERS

WE NEED YOUR HELP

SESSC volunteers invest their time, hard work, and loving care and are committed to forming a strong community and welcoming culture at our Center. They keep us strong. We have new volunteers who keep our Center going:

By the time you read this newsletter, there may be another volunteer in the house. Be sure to extend a warm welcome and thank you to our new volunteers, including the ones not on this list. Let’s keep it going strong! And we always need new volunteers.

Please consider becoming a volunteer in the following areas:

THANKS VOLUNTEERS - WE COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU!

Hieu Phan - Hieu is so friendly and kind. She is ready to change her nickname to Jennifer to make it easier for you. She lends a hand in the kitchen, responding to all the kitchen tasks with a warm, sunny smile. She is a good cook too.

Yvonne Williams - Wow, this volunteer hits it out of the park! Starting as a Front Desk volunteer, she went on to join the SESSC Board to help with fundraising. Yvonne brings a strong non-profit background to help our Center with her experience and insight – yay for us!

Betty Barela - We are so happy to have Betty lend a hand with bingo on Wednesdays! She knows all of the rules and calls just right with a pleasant voice.

Heidi Devereux - Do you like the new look of our newsletter? If so, then be sure to thank Heidi. She is the one who put our ACCENT newsletter together and we are deeply appreciative for her help. You can see Heidi at the Center during our Rainbow Bingo events. Be sure to tell her hello and thank her for helping us with our newsletter.

Community Dining Lunch Program: Because participation in our lunch program has grown dramatically, Sharon Smith, our Master Chef, needs help in the kitchen with a variety of tasks, like food preparation and washing dishes. One of the perks of being a volunteer in the Community Dining Lunch program is that you don’t have to pay for lunch.

Volunteers for Wednesday Bingo: We need volunteers for Bingo!

Front Desk Receptionist: Our list of receptionists has grown critically short and your help is greatly appreciated. Receptionists have the special and distinct honor of being the first face new people see when they visit our Center for the first time. Use your warm smile to greet people, both familiar and new.

Special Events: One of the ways the SESSC is able to provide the activities you enjoy is by raising money through our various special events such as the Lifetime Member Dinner, Auctions, and Rainbow Bingo. Be a part of the group that truly makes it happen at the Southeast Seattle Senior Center.

Cheap Chickadee Thrift Shop: We need volunteers! Be a part of the team that plays a major role in providing revenue for the Center.

There are other volunteer opportunities. Stop by Kate’s office or call her at (206) 722-0317 to find the volunteer opportunity that is right for you. New idea to try: volunteer with a friend to make it even more fun!
