Did you know there is lots of important security informaon and links on the NHW web page of the Orston Parish website? ………..Please have a look! Good News Week! The first good news is that over the last 3 months, which of course included the fesve period, there have been far fewer burglaries than our local Neighbourhood Policing Team expected. However, the police also tell us that recent burglaries have mainly resulted in stolen jewellery and cash. Their advice is that jewellery be hidden, or ideally kept in an appropriate bolted down safe, when not being worn. Further good news for our neighbourhood is that the new Chief Constable is less keen on centralisaon than his predecessor. This has resulted in the decision to no longer concentrate the police response team at Riverside. There will now be 3 police constables per shiſt based at West Bridgford and 2 at Cotgrave. Also, Inspector Craig Berry (District Commander for Rushcliffe) is now responsible for these officers. This should improve response mes, provide a more visible presence and give the police beer local knowledge of our neighbourhood. PLEASE NOTE Its very important to report crimes as otherwise rural communities may not be given the required level of resourcing they deserve. Parish Council News

Dog Warden Many residents have raised concerns over the amounts of dog droppings on pavements and verges, particularly on ‘walk to school’ routes. Whilst the health risk should be self-evident, failure to pick up dog waste can get the dog walker a £100 fine. In response to these concerns Rushcliffe Borough Council’s dog warden will be making visits to the village with the intention of enforcing the law where appropriate. It is in all our interests to monitor and reduce this nuisance and to take responsibility for our animals’ behaviour.

Best Kept Village I have been in touch with Frederick Cook who runs the 'Best Kept Village' competition. I asked him for some advice and inside information, to see what makes a village win. Apparently, there are no guarded secrets but has responded with the following; "If there is one thing that impresses the judges, I think it is evidence of real community effort to make the best of the village. I always emphasise that we are not necessarily looking for picture postcard villages but for communities that have come together to make the most of what they have". So, armed with this information, I have decided that I would like to collect evidence of how the village as a whole, gets involved in making Orston the brilliant village that it is. I would like community members to send me photos and information of any way they have had an input into improving the village, so that I can put it all together in a collage, which will be available for residents, judges and other visitors to the village to see. Claire Grace [email protected] or 07779029344 for more information.

September 16th 2018, Orston Village Hall The Countdown Begins

Early Spring prep is essential for a successful season. Over the course of the next 6 months the experienced or novice gardener can achieve a great deal by having a go at some of the following suggestions for jobs to be done in March: You can now start indoor sowing with tomatoes, aubergines or peppers. Using a small tray with compost, put them on your window sill in a sunny position. You'll be surprised how quick the seeds will sprout. If vegetables are your thing, start digging your veg patch over (once the ground has thawed) and you start planting under a cloche. If you have some fruit trees, give them a prune now as this will promote strong growth. Put some muck around the base of your fruit trees as this will provide some nutrients as the trees start to spring to life. Prune any raspberry canes down to around 15cm above the ground. For those considering entering any of the flower categories, start shopping for your seeds, prep your borders and put a bit of muck down. Prune any roses to stimulate growth. All of these jobs now will pay dividends later in the year, giving the Produce Show judges a difficult time selecting those winning exhibits.

Defibrillator Training

Friday April 6th 7.00pm Orston Village Hall Vale First Responders have kindly agreed to arrange another training evening on how to use a defibrillator and deal with associated first response issues. Light refreshments will be available. There is no charge for this event, and all are invited. If you are intending to come along, then please could you email Nick Hammond at [email protected] or ring or text 07931 758441. If you can’t do this, no problem, just turn up on the night, you’ll be very welcome Look forward to seeing you there!

Orston Spring Dash

April 29th 2018

This year we are raising funds for the school and also the Dovecote Farm branch of Riding for the Disabled. We are hoping to start the run on Church Street this year just outside the school gates. Our intention is to gather all the runners in the playground before the start and then walk them, as a group, onto Church Street just prior to the start of the run. It should only result in disruption to this road for approximately 3-5 minutes. We are also always happy to hear from villagers who might be prepared to marshal on the day or bake cakes for the event!

Wednesday 28th March, 1-3pm. Orston Village Hall

Admission is £2 - All welcome!

Despite the snow lots of parents and children turned up at The Village Hall for the launch of ‘Orston Little Ones’

on the 28th February.

3 mums from the village organised the session as they noticed there were a lot

of young families in the Orston area who needed somewhere to get together. With

delicious homemade cakes, hot drinks and snacks for the little ones, the session

was very relaxed with lots of chatting, playing and some singing to end the day. A good time was had by all so that is why

another session has been arranged. All welcome!

We would love to find some volunteers to help out with the

sessions - if you are interested or have any queries about the group

please contact [email protected]

MILLENNIUM GREEN

Don’t forget the next work party at the Green on

Saturday 10th March, 10-12.00.

Some exciting events are being planned to raise funding and promote greater use of the

Millennium Green for the benefit of the whole village. Two to put in your

diaries straight away are:

The Big Family Campout which, this year, will take place on the weekend of 21st/22ndJuly.

As well as events it is also proposed that an Eco-toilet should be provided on the Green. This would hopefully benefit all users whether they are attending events and activities or just passing through.

We would really welcome your feedback on this idea so please do come to our next trustees meeting at the Durham Ox on Monday 16th April or ring Fiona Gullis (851693) Philip Marshall (850817).
