Jesus points out in the cleansing of the ten lepers on how ungrateful human beings tend to be. He states, “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine?” Obviously we would think that such a power mira-cle of eliminating leprosy in a person would inspire all ten of them to return grateful to Christ and grateful to the power of God. We may look at those ungrateful nine and think how stupid they are. However, we as a species con-tinue to be stupid.

Leprosy had life and death repercussions for a person. If you contracted leprosy, or perceived as having leprosy, you were forced to live away from your home and outside of the city or village by the law, which meant you were effectively dead to the community and God un-til the Leprosy was healed. You could not touch anyone. You could not do work. And, you were not allowed to worship with the community. Essentially, you would starve unless family and friends brought you food. Since you could not worship, you were considered separated from God and without life. A person with leprosy was at risk of losing everything from their life in the world to their connection with God. For this reason the lack of appreciation from the nine lepers is strange.

How often do we do the same, being unapprecia-tive of God’s grace that gives us all that we have? In what way are you unappreciative of God’s goodness to you?

An obvious example of how our society turns a blind eye to truth is the question of abortion. Not only does our society accept the killing of the unborn as legal, but we have it in our law that we all must pay for the abortions other people choose through the affordable care act. This is the fight is between a deception of death and damage versus life and authentic women’s health. The issue of abortion is a major problem due to the idea of universal health care where religious institutions and every person is mandated to contribute to the funding of procedures such as abortions, which currently is defined as a necessary health need. Really! Men and women choose to engage in sex, and then, they are surprised that pregnancy is the result? Most thinking people under-stand the cause and effect relationship between sex and pregnancy since being taught about it through the “birds and the bees” in childhood. When was it that the Leprosy corrupted our hearts and minds in our society? All of us who breathe air have been graced with life on the day when our parents embraced each other in conjugal relations. We were protected and nourished until becoming independent adults. Pregnancy is not an illness. Where is our gratitude? Why does our society deny life and faith to the next generation? In Christ, Fr. Por esta razón, la falta de aprecio de los nueve leprosos es extraña. ¿Con qué frecuencia hacemos lo mismo, no apre-ciamos la gracia de Dios que nos da todo lo que tenemos? ¿De qué manera no aprecias la bondad de Dios para ti? Un ejemplo obvio de cómo nuestra sociedad hace la vista gorda ante la verdad es la cuestión del aborto. Nuestra sociedad no solo acepta el asesinato de los no nacidos como legal, sino que tenemos en nuestra ley que todos debemos pagar por los abortos que otras personas eligen a través de la ley de Cuidado de Salud Asequible. Esta es la lucha entre el engaño de la muerte y el daño contra la vida y la auténtica salud de la mujer. La cuestión del aborto es un problema importante debido a la idea de la atención médica universal donde las instituciones religiosas y todas las personas tienen el mandato de con-tribuir a la financiación de procedimientos como los abor-tos, que actualmente se define como una necesidad de salud necesaria. ¡De Verdad! Welcome CCD families to our new year! Because classes begin after Sunday mass, please make sure your family eats before coming to church, or you are welcome to patron our various ministries who sell food after Mass before class starts. Also, please meet in the main hall with your children at the beginning of each CCD Sunday. Teachers will bring the students back to the hall at the end of class as well. All parents that have children in catechism are required to be in the hall for adult faith formation. Please call the office and ask for Kim Driggs if you have any questions. Blessings!
