The 18 year old carting sensation Eshan Siri-wardene emerged champi-on at the Redbull Kart Fight Sri Lanka which was held at Independence Square recently, and got the opportunity to take Sri Lanka to global motor sport.
Sri Lanka's only go-kart centre Speed Drome has been the breeding ground for young racing drivers and Eshan Siriwardene who is trained at the Speed Drome, is some-one who achieved glory, topping all his predeces-sors.
Taking part in the All-
Island Pro Karting Cham-pionship in 2012, Eshan was on top of the champi-onship table. All 15 young drivers of the Speed Drome team bagged hon-ours at the Red Bull Kart Fight Sri Lanka and Char-ith De Soyza, Eshan Per-ies and Kyle Crossland finished among the top three. With this victory, Eshan will get the oppor-tunity of representing Sri Lanka at the Redbull International Kart Fight Championships to be held in Italy at the end of this year and he will be look-ing forward to make Sri Lanka proud. A head-on collision between a minibus and an oil tank-er killed nine Afghan football fans and injured 28 others overnight as they headed for Kabul and the final of the country's first premier league, police said Friday.
The league has been greeted with great enthusiasm in Afghanistan, with the final on Friday afternoon between teams from the north and the west expected to draw huge crowds.
The fans, many of whom play for local teams, were on their way from northern Jawzjan province to Kabul on Thursday night -- a distance of more than 300 kilometres (190 miles) -- when they died on one of Afghanistan's notoriously dangerous roads.
“Unfortunately, nine footballers and fans were killed and 28 others were wounded in a tragic traffic accident as their vehicle collided with a fuel tanker on the Shibir-ghan to Aqcha highway late Thursday evening,” provin-cial police chief Abdul Aziz Ghairat told AFP.
The death toll was confirmed by Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani, the deputy provincial governor, who said 36 were injured. AFP
