A BANNER YEAR Chris Hart, Mayor

2017 has been an eventful year in Ivins.

Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine opened its doors to its inaugural class in July.

Many of the students have become our neigh-bors and we certainly welcome them as our friends. With a nearly impossible curriculum to digest we see them mostly through the windows of the study rooms lining the front of the build-ing. However the students took time to partici-pate in our Heritage Days Parade and had a booth in the park where they offered blood pres-sure screenings and friendly conversation. I've had the privilege of addressing the student body on two occasions and have thoroughly enjoyed meeting them. They are a remarkable group of mostly younger graduate students, some here alone and some with families, all of them con-sumed by their studies preparing for the relent-less barrage of lectures and tests they face each week.

The school held two open houses allowing us and others to see the remarkable facility that they built in record time. The modern architec-ture manifest on the building's exterior carries to its interior providing interesting open spaces and spacious lecture halls, labs and classrooms. RVU students are receiving highly advanced training aided by cutting edge technologies that further enhance their educational experience. The students I have talked to feel that they made a good choice to come here and are growing to love our community.

Another exciting new landmark opened its doors this year in Kayen-ta this fall. The new Cen-ter for the Arts in Kayen-

ta is a remarkable new “black box” theater com-plex located in the heart of the Kayenta Art Vil-lage. It has been a labor of love and sacrifice on the part of the developer, the residents of Kayen-ta and many other outside supporters for over four years. Built almost exclusively using pri-

vate donations it is a tribute to the love of the arts that prevails in our city. The donor list is long and the generosity shown by many is sub-stantial. I want to thank personally all those who have worked so hard to make this lovely addi-tion to our community possible lead by the Kayenta Arts Foundation volunteers. Bravo!!!

Also this year Tuacahn com-pleted its long list of capital improvement projects includ-ing their expanded gift shop,

Coyote Awareness

Recently we have had many calls regarding our coyotes. While the sight of these animals can be very intimidating, they are a part of our natural habitat and beautiful community. Coyotes are mostly nocturnal but can be spotted during the day. Coyotes are fearful of people in general. We suggest bringing in your pets at night. Cats and small dogs are easy prey for these critters and encourage coyotes to come back. Please take this opportunity to educate your kids at home as well in case they encounter one. We have

included a link at the bottom that gives you a little more information on coyotes.

We have also had some inquiries on a low-cost spay/neuter program for pets. PAWS is currently offering this program and you can reach them at (435) 688-9748.

GREETINGS FROM INKAS (IVINS NO KILL ANIMAL SUPPORTERS)

Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas!!!! As we celebrate the holidays INKAS (Ivins No Kill Animal Supporters) would like to express deep gratitude to all of those who adopted a new fam-ily member from the Ivins No Kill Animal Shelter and to all those who have made charitable contributions and/or donated their time to INKAS.

In keeping with the holiday spirit INKAS is hopeful there are families who would like to open their homes and hearts to some of the shelter’s longer term feline residents. Although these cats are past their “kitten stage” they have so much more to offer as loving and playful adults. For more information about some of our cats please contact the Ivins Shelter 435-628-1049.
