    The 4 basic elements: First Page:

    TeasersPromote the best stories inside thepaper (also called promos orskyboxes )

    FlagThe newspapers name

    (also called the nameplate )

    InfographicA diagram, chart, map or list thatconveys data into pictograms

    DeckA smaller headline added below

    the main headline ( summary deck )

    Display HeadA `jazzed-up`, graphic headlinethat adds a more dramatic look tospecial stories

    Jump LineA text line telling the reader what page the story continues on

    LogoA small, boxed title (with art ) usedfor labeling special stories or series

    CutlineInformation about a photo(also called caption )

    Reverse typeLight-colored text set against

    a dark background color

    HeadlineThe storys title set in large type,

    above or beside the text

    ReferA brief reference to a relatedstory elsewhere in the paper

    Mug ShotA small photo (usually just the face ) of

    someone in the story or story author

    By-lineThe article writers name

    Initial CapA large capital letter set into the

    opening paragraph of a story(also called drop cap )

    Standing HeadA label used for packaging special i tems(graphics, teasers, briefs, columns, etc)

    IndexA directory of contents

    FolioA line showing edition, date, price

    Jump lineThe page number this storycontinues from ( continued from)

    Liftout QuoteA quote from the story given agraphic emphasis (also called pullquote or breakout quote)

    SubheadA smaller headline used to break upand better organize the story

    GutterThe white space running verticallybetween elements on a page

    Bastard MeasureA different column width than thestandard column measure

    SigA special label set into stories givingtypographic emphasis to the topic,title, writers name (also called bug )

    FolioA line showing the page number,date, section, papers name, etc

    Standing HeadA label used for packaging special i tems(graphics, teasers, briefs, columns, etc)

    Main PhotoThe largest photo/art in the page.

    Usually associated with the main article

    Photo CreditA line giving the photographers name

    TextThe body text of the articles,stacked in columns (or legs )

    Cutoff RuleA line (rule ) inserted to break up

    different elements on a page

    CutoutA photo in which the background has

    been cut away. Also called a silhouette

    Jump headlineA headline reserved for stories

    jumping from another page

    SidebarA related story or info section , often

    boxed, that acompanies the story.(Also called Side Box )

    Headlines

    Characteristics :

    Keep headlines conversational (write the way people speak) Use present tense, active voice Avoid bad splits (avoid verbs, adjectives or prepositions at the end of a line) Headlines should be accurate and easily understandable Are generally written downstyle Are aligned flush left Are usually wide rather than narrow Sometimes use decks

    Functions :

    Headlines summarize story contents Headlines prioritize stories (important stories get the biggest headlines) Headlines lure/attract readers into the text Headlines anchor story designs to help organize the layout
